The Altra Provision 4 fits well and is a lightweight, cushion-y shoe, but not bouncy. I hate bouncy. It has the roomy toe-box that Altra is known for, and a removable insole. I have a bad right ankle; osteoarthritis, I suppose; bone-on-bone. I thought I needed a stiff, heavy stability shoe to keep my ankle in the proper position. Surprisingly, these shoes, with my own orthotics, provide relief from that stinging collapsed ankle pain that I have despaired of ever finding. There's a very interesting lacing system on the inner side of the lacing placket that helps pull the arch upward, simply using the shoelaces. This is made more comfortable by the heavily padded tongue of the shoe. The heavy duty "Guide Rail" feature, built into the side of each shoe next to the heel, provides stability and helps keep my ankle in a more-or-less normal position. A bonus is that these shoes are actually NOT UGLY. I highly recommend these shoes for those who suffers from fallen arches or ankle arthritis.

Me: size 11 / female / slight over-pronation / medium width This shoe: I might need to update the star count, but hear me out. First impression (I have the black shoes), they're so basic and frankly nothing you'd aesthetically care to look at. One exception, I really love the wider toe-box look. This is a perfect example of fashion and function coming together. I haven't tried to do any running in them yet, so, I'll try to remember to report back. I had Aasics before and they are much higher in the ankle than these. I think I'm happy with the lower cut of this shoe (again, we shall see). The upper heel cushion is very real. Maybe too real. Cushion is usually the first to go, so I don't think this will be a long-term hug. Another benefit is that square/wider toe-boxes help make feet look smaller.

I love the technology that some of the running shoe makers are using, like this one, with the guide rails instead of a stiff medial post by the arch to keep the foot from pronating. It's much better for the foot and it doesn't "engage" unless your foot needs it. I have an older pair of New Balance that had a medial post and I ended up with a neuroma because it didn't allow my natural arch to move and flex. This is why the new school thought on pronation is to use guide rails like in this Altra Provision 4. If you get the right size, this shoe will wrap your foot like a sock and it's like not even wearing shoes. I love these. Zero drop and 27mm stack is perfect. (The Torin plush has 28mm and was too cushy for me, and the Torin 4 has 26mm which wasn't quite enough). I also love the A-bound™ EVA foam midsole in the Provision 4. (I found Quantic one a little too bouncy for me.) I also do like the Fit4Her technology as I think it really does conform better to the female foot (narrower heel for instance). Again, shoes are so personally specific to the kind of foot you have. I like a wide toe box, and narrower heel and midfoot around my arch. Some shoes have "bagged out" on the sides above the arches for me, and that is not good because that is exactly where I personally need support. I also like that the tongue isn't a mile long. The insole is neat, 6mm thick and has a neat feature which has little dimples in it, very nice and seems to add some coolness in the heat . I also like the mesh upper, as living in the Deep South, sometimes shoes with a knit upper can get a bit hot. There is a shoe for everybody, and this one fits the bill for me. (Over 60, walker, light runner, wide forefoot but narrower heel/midfoot, high arch). The lacing system requires a little practice, once you get it adjusted right for your foot it works great for me.

I have worn Altra Provision for years through all its adaptions and updates. This version is more like an athletic lightweight oxford. It has a unique design on the exterior and interior. Perhaps more narrow from mid to upper foot where the toes are. Nice moderate support and alignment. Overall, like the shoe; but would like a tad more toe room. Allow yourself extra time to get use to the lacing system of this shoe. My feet may be going through a size change so I went up a half size from my previous Altra shoes.

I bought these and the Escalante 2 to try. The Escalantes were very narrow — no go. These seemed to fit and seemed comfortable initially. However, when I walked more than about fifteen minutes in them, the muscles on the top of my feet cramped. They have an interesting internal structure, designed to support and stabilize the foot — something about it really didn’t work for my feet. Back to my search for a good Altra street running shoe.

They have a roomy toe box, so they’re terrific for bunions. Not quite as much heel cushioning as I typically prefer. I kept them and I’ll wear them, but wouldn’t pay full price for them again.

I fully "get" that people want a wide toe box. I developed a morton's neuroma under my last 2 toes (from wearing a different brand, although it was a high-end shoe). I knew I needed more toe splay. But the REST of my foot is quite narrow. I have a high arch but am narrower thru that area; I have a low instep, and relatively narrow heels. So what they call a "low volume foot". I am also a slight pronator, with ankles that are not strong. I tried the Torin 4.5 Plush, I felt like I was going to fall off that shoe, and I could see, just from walking, that I was starting to pronate. That, combined with the higher stack is what gave me the feeling that I would "fall off" that shoe. I had no control over my feet. The older Torin 4 with the lower stack was no good for me, it was similar to my previous other brand shoe I was already wearing where I felt like the midsole was flat and dead and just not enough stack/padding in the metatarsal area. Enter the Provision 4. I like the lower profile. I put them on and it was like my feet were wrapped in a perfectly fitting sock. But in a shoe. I had never before felt like "twinkle-toes" before wearing these. I am over 60, so I have to be careful with my balance and make sure I am sure-footed. I could literally not even tell I had shoes on! They just melded with my body, posture, ankles and legs and for the first time in years I felt like my feet were in perfect harmony and sympathy with my movements. I also tried on a pair of Lone Peaks. My feet were literally swimming around in those. Like all over the place, because I simply do not have the foot volume to wear them w/out using 2+ pair of socks. So feet are very individual, there is something for everyone. And the Altra Provision 4 is just perfect for me. Not everyone who wants a wide toe box wants the rest of their shoe to be wide in all the other places, or higher on the sides or back, etc.

First, when I say feels true to size, I always order a size up in Altra and they all work with my regular size inserts. I was a bit concerned about some of the reviews, but went ahead and ordered, as feet are so incredibly individual. I've only been wearing Torin Mesh and Escalante, so not familiar with the last Provision as a comparison. Altra has been a life saver for me, as I have pretty bad bunions and Altra has a pretty great toe box. When I first put the Provision on, I was delighted with the support, while still having such plush cushioning. I only walk and do aerobic/strength/core exercise, so no comment on running, but I wear them all day. The only piece that bothered me was what seemed to be a slightly narrower (and better looking) toe box. I put the inserts from the Torin and Provision together, and in one section the Provision is maybe 1/8" narrower (see photo of insert toe box section). I measured because I felt some pressure on my bunion. Given the mesh top, which I love, I decided to wear them for a couple of days and see if it's stretched out adequately to relieve the pressure. Sure enough, it did and at no time did I have any pain. I do have to pull the laces a little bit tighter than I ordinarily would on the Torin and Escalante as I have a narrow heel and the heel on the Provision seemed a bit looser. The shoe, the laces, the support are all very comfortable, and I appreciate the extra bit if rigidity. Esthetically, I'd prefer not to have a light gray rubber piece at the toe of a black and darker gray shoe. Personally, I'd prefer black. But if that's the only con, I said to myself, it's a keeper. Bottom line is I'm very happy I got the Provision. Like my other Altras, I don't want to take them off and just wish the rest of my body felt as cushioned and supported as my feet.

I have been wearing Provisions since the first model, and I've liked them all a lot. But this Provision 4 is my favorite! I will admit that the Provision has a narrower toe box than the other Altras I wear (Torin Plush and Escalante), but I LIKE that. It's still considerably wider than traditional running shoes, but is less clunky than the other Altra models due to the streamlined shape. I do size up 1/2 size from the Torin and Escalante, though. I think the fit of this model, the padded tongue and collar, and the support mechanics are excellent. I am on my second pair of Provision 4's! I also recently bought the Torin Plush 4.5, which is indeed plush, but my ankles and knees were a tad sore after wearing those for a 15 miler, compared to the pain-free long runs in my more supportive Provision 4 shoes! The only minor complaint I have is the color choices. But I'll sacrifice color for a great fitting running shoe any day :)

Aside from sprinting down the hallways of the psych hospital I work at for a variety of reasons that you honestly wouldn't believe are true unless you work in psych, I can't imagine going for an actual run in these. That said, they are absolutely PERFECT for long hours on my feet, walking, and the aforementioned occasional short sprint. I wear them 9-16 hours a day, five days a week and the soles are holding up, however I am getting some wear in the material over the toe box (but I also imagine most people aren't wearing these for as long and often as I do). I have a significant spinal deformity so I'm extremely picky about what goes on my feet, and by far, the Provisions are literally my perfect work shoe. My local running shop only had the black and salmon pink color combo so they clash horribly with my work scrubs, BUT EVEN DESPITE THAT I still think they're the greatest nursing shoes I've ever had the pleasure to wear to work! (If you're reading this, Altra designers, please give me a basic navy blue or gray option soon ;)

Amazing shoe, the most comfortable I have worn yet. My heel is narrow and my toes are wide and this shoe fit to a T except I needed a size smaller. Will order the smaller size and expect to be very very happy.

I'm 63, female, and although not an athlete, am very active; housework, yard work, grandkids, etc. I learned earlier this year that my right ankle bones are collapsing. Podiatrist says I was "born with those feet," and offered nothing but NSAIDs to help. Thank the LORD I found these ALTRA PROVISION 4.0 shoes with the Guiderail feature, which helps a LOT to keep my ankle from rolling to the inside. There is a very unique lacing system that pulls support from under the foot across the arch to help lift and keep the arch in place. I've never seen anything like it in a shoe. Add to that some very stiff, high arch support orthotics from a major online merchant, and I am almost pain-free. These have saved my ankle and bought me some time. The shoes are very supportive, but not stiff. There's enough bounce to keep me rollin', but not so much that I'm all over the place. I'm going to see a bone and joint surgeon (fortune teller, really, to tell me my future!) to see if anything more can be done, but in the meantime, these wonderful shoes have allow me to continue to live my life. Yes, my feet get tired and it's painful to stand in place for very long, but I can get around just fine all day, everyday. I bought 2 pairs of Provision 4.0 and intend to buy a couple more this year to keep in reserve.

These feel narrow and snug - and I have very narrow feet! I was on the fence about keeping them or returning- I decided to risk it and wear them outside walking. Be warned about the narrowness. I like the thicker cushioned sole for walking. The heel and tongue also have a lot of cushion. I do sometimes feel like there’s a bit of pressure on the top of my foot. Will see if they loosen and stretch a bit after a few walks. I do like the all black color. Great for outdoor walking.

I wore these only twice on a 3-4 mile walk in a parkway. I've bought Altra before and have had very good experiences but not this time. I got a blister on the inside of my heels from the insole and side of the shoe pinching my foot in between. I'm very surprised at this especially how much I paid for them. This will really impact my future purchases. I'll have to now go out and buy an insole to replace what came with the shoe. Really truly disappointing and this shoe is a bit narrower than what is typical of Altras. My feet are normal width with no real issues.

Too flimsy with not enough support for midfoot motion control. Felt like the sole was very thin. Over corrected for pronation so much for me I was walking on the outsides of my feet. Did have a big toe box, kind of like a keen shoe. Did have a true fit. Just not the right sole thickness or orientation for me, maybe good for someone else. Never know if you don't try. Will be exchanging and trying another shoe.

I purchased these because I LOVE their Solstice shoe for boxing and HIIT workouts. I wore them to work one day (I am a chef and on my feet 8-12 hours a day) and loved them, only wishing there was more cushioning. I did my research on their other shoes and this one came up as much more cushioning, so I tried it. I walked around the house for a couple of hours and they seemed alright, so I went to work in them. The cushioning was not better, though there is more of it. The arch support feels non-existant, the shoe is not particularly flexible, and my feet were in pain within an hour on the hard floors. Of course it's too late to send them back, I wore them outside and in the restaurant kitchen, as well as running errands, so that ship has sailed. What I did do is go back to my original pair and add a gel insert and voila! The best shoe ever for kitchen work! If the Altra had some arch support I would try them for trail running; I do have high arches/high instep and it is too painful to not have any support. I rarely spend this much on shoes and am so in love with the Solstice I believed it to be a great bet. I lost big on this one and if you are looking for great cushioning, moderate arch support, and good flexibility in your shoe, keep looking.

I wear an 8 in athletic shoes and these were true to size and width. I waited over a month to give these a wear test prior to my review. I was suffering from Achilles’ tendonitis and bought these in desperation (I ordered & returned 4 other pairs in that shipment, thanks Zappos) when I tried them on my tendon problem was relieved and has remained so. It took about a week to get accustomed to the stretch these shoes provided to my calf muscles. The lacing system has taken some getting used to and it tends to eat some of my low cut socks but Thorlos Expedia runnning socks work fine with these shoes. Overall I couldn’t be happier with these shoes. In fact I like them so much I am ordering a second pair.

The fit is superb, I love the Innovarch that hugs my foot without restriction and given me just that nudge of stability without feeling overly guided or forced. The midsole is responsive but comfortable. The padding at the achilles and tongue is also super plush and lovely. I have been an Altra fan for a while but this shoe is by far my favorite for roads.

I usually wear hokas but after lossing 50 lbs my foot just didnt fit them anymore. My shoe lady recommended these to me since i weight lift a lot. These are game changers for extremely flat feet. My hips feel great, my arches dont hurt, and i didnt need insoles to wear them! I can acually run in these too! Love them when my walking shoes go out i will be buying these to replace them as well! My foot pain is gone too which is something i didnt think could happen. The unique style and shape really make these shoes wonderful and i love that work for everything in the gym. I never have to switch shoes at the gym bc of the "flatness" of the shoe my leg day is killer.
