This is without a doubt a premium shoe that harkens back to classic sneakers from the 80's and 90's. The ultimate "dad shoe" for sure, they make me think of my father who loved wearing New Balance shoes. The build quality, materials, craftsmanship, fit--literally everything about this shoe is over the top amazing. Shoes arrived brand new as you'd expect, tags in tact, shoes unlaced, paper in the toes of the shoes. After lacing them up and sliding my feet inside, my first thought was the unbelievable comfort. Fantastic padding in the back of the heel, sole provides tremendous support without being too much, and they're not squishy like many shoes today. They really feel like the New Balance shoes I fell in love with years ago. There are just so many great things to say about this shoe and I'm thrilled these are made in the USA! Truly an all time classic that still looks and feels fantastic!
For people suggesting the tongue slides around, use the patch on the tongue, that's what it's there for.

They are wide enough for my father's swollen feet.

I would only buy this product again if you put back the strip on the tongues that holds the laces in place and keeps them from drifting from left to right. Can't believe that NB would leave them off. It can't be to save money, can it? The price charged seems enough to provide this convenience.
If you offered to sew them onto my new 990 shoes, that would seem appropriate. Let me know of you are willing to follow through with my suggestion

It's so depressing how far New Balance has sunk. The quality is in the toilet now. These shoes are a shell of former years. Worse construction. Less padding. And for WAY more money. I'm shocked at how much the price of this model has gone up over the years. It's embarrassing really. I'm glad I found Brooks. I'll stick with them.

The fit and size were right on. The support was as expected. These shoes are the best. Alittle over priced
but I would not buy other shoe. I have been a fan of the 990v4 for years. Now I am a fan of the new model.

I have worn this shoe for twenty five years. They fit my feet perfect. Great walking shoe and great everyday shoe to walk in. I used to buy them locally but the store I purchased them at quit carrying my size 14. One nice thing about ordering direct from New Balance is a better choice of colors. Shipping was fast and free. How can you beat that.

I just wanted to corroborate what other reviewers have said. My "true" shoe size according to the Red Wing store measurements is 13.5 wide. For comparison I wear a 12EE in the Maine Hunting shoe which fits great. This shoe definitely runs narrow - I first tried the 14EE and it felt like a normal D-width shoe. The 14EEEE fits exactly like I'd expect a wide, E, or EE shoe to fit.
So my advice - if you wear "normal" width shoes, try the EE first. If you wear wides, go for the EEEE. If you normally wear extra wides, you're probably out of luck.
As for the shoes themselves, they look nice, they're comfortable, I like them so much I got a 2nd pair in Navy. Love that they're made in the US as well.

I have bought NB 990s in the past and liked them. I bought this particular model because of positive reviews about reduction of foot pain. The shoes have great support. They help me with plantar fasciitis pain and correct the way my heels strike the pavement, helping with back pain. Will buy additional pairs.

Please dont ever change the quality of the 990. These are simply the most comfortable shoes I have ever worn. The comfortable support of the Ultrasoft ortholite feels amazing and the upper does not feel flimsy. Also love that they are made in good ole USA!

I’ve been wearing New Balance 990v4, for several years, I just purchased my first pair of v5’s and so far are doing the job, I wear size 10 2EE which seem to work best for me, I don’t run anymore but do walk an average of 5 miles per day, I would highly recommend them. I wish they made them in the double EE in a few more colors, they only come in black, navy or gray.

Cons: my big toe can punch a hole over mesh eventually. There is not enough protection lid over.
Pros: shoes are made well with comfort arch Insole. Recommend.

I use my New Balance shoes nearly daily except when I go to church. Purchased my first pair in 1985 and have never bought or wanted any other shoe except New Balance. I have gone through or have currently available the 15 pairs I have purchased over the years.

I used to be an Asics-guy, but this M990v5 fits perfectly and looks better. The fact that these are US-made, right here in New England, means that there's no excuse to not try a pair.

Tag states made in the USA, however width on same model but on different colors, did not have the same toe box size. Had to exchange for a wider size. Beware! Keep your shipping carton and try on as you have 45 days to exchange. Free shipping return does not cover a poly shipping bag. You will need your shipping carton!

I used to wear 990’s but have been wearing ASICS for the last five years. I have flat feet and I weigh 215 pounds and the ASICS have just gotten narrower, lighter, and have less real support. This is great if you’re a smaller runner with perfect mechanics and minimal foot issues. But for me, I needed more support. So I went back to the 990’s and I’m really glad I did. They are definitely heavier and more solid underneath the foot. They also run a hair larger than I was used to, but I am fine using my normal size. Fits with my orthotic just fine. They’re just a little more hefty. Not massive or bulky, but it’s definitely a more substantial shoe than the ASICS “support” shoes like the Kayano or GT-2000. The 990’s just provide me with the right amount of support that I need for my larger frame. In a running shoe world that seems to go lighter and fluffier every year (which, again, is good for some), I’m glad the 990’s still offer support and mass for those who need it. And these never go out of style.
