I think the Speedcross 5 is an improvement on an already great shoe. This version has a more rounded toe box and is slightly wider. I ordered the same size as I did in the Speedcross 4 and I think it might be a tad bit longer, but other than that, it is perfect. The shoe is a little higher on the ankle and this is means less debris gets in the shoe. I can't tell if it is more cushioned or if I had just worn the other pair down to nothing. I like the lacing better, it is wider and more comfortable. All in all, the fit is even better and the performance is still 5 star. Two weeks in and this shoe is a winner.
I'd also recommend:

I love the shoes, but please CUT THE LACE LOOP and tie off the ends. The loop came untucked while I was running, caught my other foot, and I fell and broke my elbow. The one star for style is for the lace loop

I've previously worn the Speedcross 4 and loved them. This new Speedcross 5 is cut differently with the back of the shoe riding higher and pressing on my Achilles tendon and the sides are also higher and rub on my ankles. I will be returning it and fortunately the Speedcross 4 is still available.

I have never written a review before, but feel like other customers should know that Salomon appears to have changed its sizing on this shoe. I've had three pairs of the Salomon Speedcross shoes, which have been my go-to hiking shoes, but am returning the latest one. The toe box and the shoe in general is much narrower then it used to be--even in the wide version. This might work for others out there, but I am very bummed that my favorite shoes no longer fit me!

My speedcross 4's were perfect for my narrow feet. These feel way too big and much wider. I'll try the next size down and see how that works. Wah.

My favorite trail shoe! I have too many hiking shoes/boots to mention that we’re either too big or too small or made my feet hurt or that were too hot! Now I’ve found the perfect shoe! Based on other reviews I ordered a half size smaller than I usually wear. These for perfect. Took them for a 8 mile hike and my feet never hurt. I felt as if i was walking on air! I don’t trail run but I like these for hiking since I live in a moderate climate-my feet often get too warm in regular hiking boots. Highly recommend!

I've previously worn the Speedcross 3 model, had NO issues whatsoever. I'm happy to report that the 5 model is a great fit as well. Just got back from my second 10 mile hike and these shoes fit perfectly! I'm a 7.5 in most shoes, but usually go up to 8 or even 8.5 in athletic and hiking shoes. NO need to do that here, the 7.5 fits with room to spare in the toes. This is perfect for going down-hill and prevents toes jamming and nails turning black. No hot spots, nothing rubbing my ankles or achilles heel. I've replaced the insole (liner) with Powerstep insoles for more arch support. Someone mentioned a high heel? The colors make it seem like a high and chunky heel but 10mm isn't high - that translates to 6/16th of a inch. You can't call that high.

Ended up preferring this fabric to the Gortex GTX version which felt too hard folding on top of toes when pushing off. OK to not be waterproof - will dry faster if they get wet. Very happy with the comfort! Tried on lots of shoes to finally get to this point of having something comfortable right out of the gate. Fabulous grip on soles! I plan to hike many many miles in these for many many years!

I'm using my second pair of Speedcross 5. I liked Speedcross 3 as well, but I didn't like Speedcross 4 so much. Two improvements I really like about "5" is (1) the high heel pad that protects Achilles tendon area and (2) softer material on top of shoe, which made them a little more durable and don't get holes where they bend as easily as "3" or "4". The only downside is the weight being heavy side.

I have a short wide foot with a high arch. I opened the box and thought these would be narrow but they weren’t my arch could fit in and I didn’t have to go to a 7. I’m a 6-6.5 and it’s hard to find wide shoes. I just walked 2 miles and they were great! Shoes are usually a compromise. No compromise here!

I have been running in Salomon's for about 5 yrs. I am so glad my friend and i have made the switch. We have run in Speedcross 5 for about a year now. They are comfortable( i had lower back fusion L4&5 done, so stability and cushion are very important.) Last but not least are the lugs, lugs are 'extremely' important since they provide traction in different weather conditions. Here in California our trails are very dry and rocky, which also means the trails are dirt-slippery. I have top relationship with my Speedcross 5. They give me the confidence i need to run down hill, and when hiking up them. They run true to size, mid ankle support, definitely more support than Speedcross 4 Try them, you wont be disappointed.

I have to say I was skeptical but after my 1st two pairs (speedcross 3) I bought and never got to wear bc I quit playing softball, yes I bought the shoes for softball. Well the best thing to come out of this crazy time right now is I have reconnected to nature and have been walking/hiking. Let me tell you, I love the shoes so much for hiking I bought another pair (speedcross 5). Only Downfall is on one pair of shoes the clip broke to tighten laced and tuck away! But love these shoes and can't wait for my next pair!! The shoe is lightweight, durable, great quality and great traction!! Would love to see a waterproof speedcross shoe!

These are comfortable but have a LOT of heel on them. Not high exactly, but if you have heel problems, they might be good for you. Lots of support going on back there.

I've had a pair of the Speedcross 4's that I've used a ton for the past year. I liked them except that I always wished the toe box had a little more room. Welllllll, enter the upgraded Speedcross 5 WITH A BIGGER TOE BOX and I'm in love. The traction lugs are also bigger and better. Since getting these, I've put them through a 16+ mile hike, as well as used them while I trained for and completed a Ragnar Trail relay run in Snowmass, CO. And I wear them while I play ultimate frisbee instead of cleats because I like having the extra support...they work great on both turf and grass fields. They're easy to synch up tight so you don't lose them in ankle deep mud and you can easily make adjustments on the go. Other than wishing they were waterproof (one of the Ragnar Trail loops was a total mud fest), and that the lugs were just a bit tougher (one or two on each shoe is already starting to show wear after a month and a half), these are the greatest shoes ever. Not to mention the teal/blue/purple color is beautiful to look at (when not half covered in mud). *Also as a caveat for those who have never worn the Speedcross, they run VERY large. I usually wear a 10 in running shoes, 9.5 in most other shoes...and I wear a 9 in these with plenty of room in the toes. If you have a pair of the Speedcross 4's, the sizing is the same for the 5's.

I run long distance off-road in all conditions. The Speedcross has our performed all others I've tried in traction, dryness if you have the GTX, and most important comfort! I own three pairs! Their Gortex Hiking Boot that's hauled me blister free across South Africa, the Speedcross GTX that keeps me dry running in the rain and mud, and now the standard Speedcross 5 for summer off-road running which will run me around Ireland and Scotland's best trails this year. Pop into REI and try a pair on. Worth your time!

Toe box a bit to slappy, a little too long and a bit too wide for medium width. I can't downsize or the heel is too tight. Previous shoes of the same style were a perfect fit, if a bit too snug, but would stretch over time. If a consumer wants a wider shoe, order a wide width.

I just went out for my first trail run in these shoes and I was surprised by how great they felt, right out of the box. After 5k, my feet felt so good, I wanted to keep running. I can't imagine a better trail running shoe.

I bought a pair of Speedcross 5 on April 2019 for my first Spartan Sprint. And I love the comfort, the grip and the design. So far I have done 3, 5ks and 1-10k. And I just did a second Spartan on April 2021 with the same pair. And they are still in great shape.

I absolutely love these shoes. They're tough enough to keep up with +50 mile weeks whether those miles be through dry trail, rocky terrain, or snow-packed trails. They also carry a Gore-tex version, which do amazing in mud, slush, snow, or rainy conditions. I'm on at least my 5th or 6th pair by now. I bought my first pair the day before my first 50-miler (they say the number one thing not to do during a race is to wear brand new shoes), and I was so happy with the decision! I didn't get a single blister. The Speedcross are so comfortable and with the contagrip they do great in muddy conditions! I'm a trail and ultra runner who puts in a lot of miles and I finally found a shoe that can keep up with me! I'm 5'6", 120lbs and wear a 8.5. I have narrow, flat feet and these shoes give me the support that I need for long miles on the trails and in the mountains.

Bought for Nevada hiking trip, but used for walking, running and HIIT workouts 2 weeks prior to trip. Comfy and stable. Then, performed wonderfully while climbing rocks and hiking through gravel wash. Loved the easy on and off.

So comfortable! Perfect for hikes and wet grass walks. Keeps my feet dry, and happy. I’d buy them again in a heartbeat but I think I’ll try another style.

two times wearing them--they definitley are not super soft on the inside, but that is normal for trail shoes. So far, lots of support and solid sole for rocky trails.
