Overall, I really like the Lone Peak 4.0 Mid RSM. Altra made some nice improvements over the 3.0. Technically speaking the 4.0 has better a tread design, more streamlined padding on the tongue and ankle walls, and better drape to the RSM fabric. My only complaint so far is the piece of fabric that lies over the tongue to keep the tongue centered between the shoestrings. It's rather large for the job and actually prevents my foot from slipping into the shoe easily. Perhaps more use will loosen it up a bit. I have also noticed that the 4.0 is not as warm as the 3.0, I presume because the fabric is thinner, ergo, the better drape. Nonetheless, it is still warmer than the low risers and gets me through early morning Colorado walks. Aesthetically speaking, I think the 4.0 just has a more stylish, sleeker look to it. I really like the red/grey combo and hope Altra will return to its roots and bring back more stylish color choices for men. Last year's Lone Peak models looked like they were designed by Kim Jong-Un.

The Lone Peak 4 Mid RSM is slightly narrower than the Lone Peak 4 Low style - perhaps the materials and gusset that make it the RSM are limiting how much the shoe opens. I have a 4E width foot, and these just barely fit with an ultralight wool sock. I hope some day Altra will add wide width shoes!

Tried on and immediately returned -- the shoe top is made of a material that makes noise every time you step. Its annoying and sounds like a rubber boot. The material also makes the shoe very hot -- it does not let moisture escape. Glad I got these on Zappos and the return was easy.

I bought these based on my podiatrist's insistence the day before I left on a three week trip to Mongolia that included quite a bit of hiking over varied terrain. They are honestly waterproof. I was able to step through the streams we crossed without getting the least bit wet. I was surprised that with no break-in at all, the shoes were very comfortable once I was able to pull them on. As mentioned in another review, they're quite hard to put on. I'd always have to allow extra time just to get them on. I have somewhat touchy feet, and was wearing a 3/4 length insole for additional arch support. That worked pretty well from a comfort standpoint. My only beef with the shoes was that the sole under the forefoot was very flexible and I could feel every rock I stepped on. I have been looking for an insole that will add more rigidity in the toe box while still having a decent arch support. Haven't found anything perfect yet.

Altra Lone Peak Mid is the only shoe I wear, period. It's really, truly zero drop, just what my back, hips & knees want. It's the only style whose toe box is wide enough and high enough for my forefoot. The sole cushion is moderate: I wish it were max.
I'd also recommend:
only Altra!

If you are already familiar with the fit of Altra shoes, you will love these. The padding and support is right in the middle of the pack for an Altra and is on par with most other brand trail runners. These shoes are excellent for light trail running but I wear them as a general purpose shoe also. If you have a wide forefoot and a rather low arch, you must give the Altra brand a try! Note: I wear a size 11.5 in almost all brands of footwear but in Altra, an 11 fits perfect.

I'm modifying a review I sent on 4-10-2019. These shoes are comfortable and work fine on level smooth surfaces- I could wear them all day. I have no issue with the waterproof feature. I did not submerge them, but on small puddles and splashes, they were fine. However, when I wore them on uneven rocky trails the high tops chafed my ankles, even wearing extra socks for cushioning. I'm disappointed because I was hoping for ankle support, but these didn't work out.

A little big in the torbox, but snug at the ankle and mid-step. Chunky, but comfortable. They went back after trying a few diff. sizes. Prefer Inov-8.

I was surprised that these boots fit so differently from my Altra running shoes. They were way too narrow. In addition, these boots have this strange lace retaining system consisting of little tubes that the laces thread through. It was nearly impossible to properly adjust the laces - although, since I returned the boots I don't know if the tube system would be easier after break. In addition, the recalcitrant lacing system made it nearly impossible to remove the boots. I liked the material used in these boots, but couldn't get past their odd sizing and obtuse lacing system.

LOVE this shoe! I love Altras in general, over the years. They saved me really. Though I hear they are now making them with less width these days. I sure hope that is not true. That wide toe box is the beauty of Altra, and as long as they keep that , I'll keep buying them, very happily. The only downside is that the waterproofing doesn't hold up, but I easily fix that with Nikwax or such. Otherwise, they can't be beat.

I find these to be perfect for hiking and traveling. I'm on my second pair. They have been waterproof for me, even while hiking all day in the intermittent rain on the boggy munros, occasionally stepping into deep puddles and little streams. I initially had a problem with tightness through the mid-foot arch, but fixed it by changing the lacing (not including the strap across the tongue at the arch, and skipping the mid lace spots). Then they are perfect for my wide forefoot and high arch. Most comfortable shoes I have.

I have truly put this pair of Altras to the test this summer. I live in Alaska and have logged over 200 trail miles in them since May. They have provided great support and traction through many different trail settings. They are comfortable and my feet have stayed trouble free during those miles. Many of the hikes involved rock scrambles and the Trail Claw soles did their job. I do buy a half size up from my regular shoe size. They are showing some wear but I've given them a good workout and scraped them across many rocks in the process. The only minor negative is that they require some effort to get my foot in even with unlacing the top two loops, but that is probably just part of the mid-rise style.

These boots are ridiculously light and cozy. I put them to the test today right out of the box. Maybe not for everyone but with wide feet like mine-heaven.

I absolutely LOVE these shoes, they are my only summer hiking "boot". The added height for water proofing and the extra support push these above the low top Lone Peaks for longer hikes, or hikes in wet weather. They are incredibly comfortable and my feet are never sore after a long day, even with a multi-day pack. My only gripe is that they only last me a season before the flex point completely fails. In Altra's defense, I use these for a lot of off-trail travel and there is a lot of scree in Alaska that I surf these through. But because they are so incredibly comfortable, I will continue to buy a new pair each season until a more durable but still agile replacement comes to market.

Good shoe. I am not a trail runner. Would not hike it in it unless it was flat ground. Not torsionally rigid as expected...not suitable for sharp terrain.

I live in Northwest Indiana. When it comes to hiking, our moraines and sandy dunes are about as good as it gets, so what do I know about a hiking boot, right? I'm 6'2" and weigh 220. I'm hard on everything I own. Not willfully nor maliciously; I simply work hard. I wear these boots when I work outside in my yard which is 4-8 hours a day on the weekends. I have a very uneven lawn that has a 30 degree incline in the front. I have low spots that collect water, areas with tall, tangly native grasses, a few hilly features, and 50+ year old silver maple tree roots protrude above the grass throughout my yard just begging me to trip over them. I beat the snot out of these boots, and they are solid. I slosh through those low areas where the water goes above the lace line, and my feet stay dry. I have bad ankles and bad knees, and these suckers support me comfortably and durably. A misstep on a tree root is nothing, yet I spin, turn, and jump like I'm wearing some cushy approach shoes. These are the best outdoor boots I've ever worn, and as long as Altra keeps making like this, I'll never need anything else.

Tried on this shoe for the first time today and I absolutely love the fit. I wear size 12, ordered size 12, and it seems to fit perfectly. My big toe stops a touch short of the end of the shoe, but I think that's the idea behind the large toe box and the shoe is tight enough through the tongue that I would not expect impact to the toe when running. I wish there was more arch support, but I do think they will break in nicely to be more supportive. I also wish the metal grommets at the top of the laces were open like traditional boots. It would be a lot easier to get the shoes on and off if I could loosen them more. All around these shoes seem to be of great quality, and I cannot wait to get onto the trail.

Selected these for the Kennedy 50 mile walk. Most comfortable trail shoes I have ever tried. No issues at all - no blisters. Loved the wider toe box!

I have had my MEN'S LONE PEAK 4 MID RSM for 6 months now and use them almost every day. Trail running and hiking in the Tillamook Forest. These shoes are a high top trail running shoe not a boot. Comfortable and fit like all my other Altra's. They have worked very well for me. They have kept my feet dry this winter and it has been a fairly wet and cold one. With plenty of snow this year. They are just now starting to let some moisture through after six months. Other than that they are holding up very well. I would highly recommend the MEN'S LONE PEAK 4 MID RSM.

I love these boots. I have predominately worn these for all of my hiking/walking workouts here in the mountains of New Mexico. I have just replaced my Old boots today. My old pair are still in great shape the original shoelaces are still on them and all of the loops for the laces are still completely intact. The only reason why I am replacing my old pair is because after 900 miles I have worn out the soles of the shoes.

Fit is spot on and very comfortable. Only concern is that they make some noise as they flex, most likely due to material used. Have run in Altra for years and love them. These should be great for backcountry jaunts.

Fit and width are great. Good able support. I haven’t tried them in wet conditions so I can’t comment on that factor. The fabric is not like my other Altras - kind of stiff but they don’t make noise. I’m very pleased with these shoes.

Bought these for backpacking and hiking. They are unbelievably light and very comfy, even with a full pack. Walked through several streams up to and over laces and never got socks wet. Holding up well after 3 trips. Will never wear bulky hiking boots again.
