I use these for hiking and work. They hold up to the weather pretty good. This is my second pair of the lone peak 4 mid.

If you have a broad forefoot and a narrow heel, as I do, this shoe fits very well. In this mid-top version, it is also hard to put on. I have to loosen all the laces to the max and use the finger loop on the back top with considerable force to get in on. This is much less of a problem with the low-cut version I purchased after this one. Still worth the good fit tho. That, and the level sole, make it a stable shoe for me. The breathable waterproof membrane has been good. Good for light hiking on uneven terrain. However, the minimal padding around the tongue and the tongue design, as well as the somewhat flimsy materials, make it unsuitable for me for heavy hiking like backpacking. Not enough padding in the upper and the tongue, the tongue gusset is not high enough and not enough support in the upper portion of the shoe. Granted, I am an old guy so not everyone may need all that. So, overall a good shoe but consider what you want it for.

I've used my for 2 years over 500 miles of rough hiking.
First years they were reasonably waterproof. The 2nd year they weren't and small tears and holes developed. They are light and comfortable with good ankle support. I will likely buy them again but wish they would last longer

Just got done with 22.6 miles on Mt. Whitney in these. Overall they felt great. It was a bummer to see all the "true to size" reviews, as in my experience they are definitely a 1/2 size too big. So I had to do a bit of a run around to get the right size before heading out.
Traction on these are fantastic. Super lightweight. In clearing the way for some uphill hikers on my way down I stepped fully into some water and my foot stayed completely dry. So waterproofing is confirmed. I only wish Altra had a gaiter designed to go with this shoe. They gaiter they offer is not a great combo with these. One of my only (but biggest) gripes is the little lip on the back of the sole of the shoe sometimes flings loose debris onto the back of your opposite leg. So if you're not wearing gaiters, you are definitely going to get rocks in your shoe.

Very comfortable boots. Had to get a half size smaller than my normal shoe size. Only concern is the waterproofing layer on the outside of the boot. Had to return one pair after a hole developing in the waterproofing layer after only wearing a couple times around town. So far the replacement pair is holding up after a few days of wearing to work, and a 12 mile hike in very muddy conditions. Feet stayed dry the entire trip.

I am not new to Altra but I am new to wearing Altra in winter. These mid RSM are a very good start but they lack durability I would expect of a boot design. The toe material is extremely thin and water proofing does not last long term.
The fit and feel is on par with other Altra shoes. I went up half a size to fit a winter sock on and now hiking in - 10. Anything colder and feet really feel it.
I really like them but needs refinement. I hope this next generation fills that gap between summer and mild winter.

I see a lot of complaints about the waterproof failing. I wear mine to do everything from hiking and running to weightlifting and working and I gave no issues with the waterproofing.
After 6 months of hard use on of the loops on the back unstitched and I have to use deodorizer things in the shoes or they reek. Otherwise theses guys are outstanding

My feet have become such a problem I wondered how long I could keep doing my favorite outdoor activity, backpacking. I had tried several approaches along with physical therapy exercises on a regular basis to relieve the numbness that would occur around the balls and toes of my feet. I just used the Lone Peaks on a 3 day trip and it was a complete success. While my feet still had some issues there was absolutely no comparison to what I had been experiencing. I put in a green Super Feet insert because I like the stiffness and it gives my heel a slight lift. While the grip on surfaces was not as good as desired, like other reviewers noted, the boot was great. The wide toe box allowed my foot to spread to its most comfortable state while the geometry of the heel cup area and the instep kept the rest of the foot in control and tight in the desired spot. I do not have a high instep but found it difficult to get the shoe on even with laces completely loose. I concluded that this restriction was part of the reason that I had absolutely no issue with the normal problem of my big toes hitting the front of the boot regardless of how well I laced the foot in. First time in the last 3 outings that I have not ended up with at least one black big toenail. Love these shoes.

Purchased these along with Merrell Moab and Asolo Fugitives to compare. My feet issues: wide feet, high arches, pronounced heel spur, Achilles tendonitis/plantars, and weak ankle ligaments which always make me feel like I am about to turn my ankle.
The Altras were the best of the three.
Pros:
1) Good pronation support due to the wide toe box.
2) When laced to the top, I feel like my ankles are very well supported. Have had a few scares on the trail twisting on rocks but knock on wood, the boots helped me not roll my ankle.
3) Super light. By far the lightest hiking boot I've ever used. I've only had them a week (about 20 miles of hiking), so I don't yet know if this will translate into reduced durability over the long haul.
4) Super roomy. I normally am a size 13, bought size 14 to install some custom orthotics and a heel cup. Lots of room but at the same time I don't feel like I'm slipping around. I have not yet done steep descents to test toe jamming, but with laced up ankles and and wide toe box, I don't think this will be a problem.
5) Excellent return policy. Altra lets you try these out ON THE TRAIL for 30 days. Neither my Moabs nor my Asolo's let me do this, so I wore those around the house. Good on you, Altra, for this customer-friendly return policy.
Cons:
1) Need mole foam on my heel spurs to prevent rubbing. I have really protruding heels, so this is probably unique to me, and hopefully after some break-in I won't need the mole foam.
2) One of Altra's selling points is the flat foot design. That might be great for those with normal feet, but for someone with achilles/plantars issues, it is terrible, no matter what marketing spin they through at you. There is a reason that orthotics for those issues lift your heel. I wore these for a day without a heel cup and could definitely feel the pain in my achilles in the evening. So, now I use a heel cup on top of my orthotics to give my feet just a titch of elevation to solve that problem.

Reviewed as of June 2019.... Bought this shoe in the spring 2019 to walk the Camino De Santiago in Spain in the fall 2019. Did about 50miles of flat hikes with 20#packs so far.
Pro:
- light weight
- mid top with good ankle support
- tested in shallow below ankle water and no leak.
- gaiter attachment (this is also a CON, see below)
- soft and good tread pattern for good grip.
- very comfortable!!
Con:
- wish tongue gusset come up higher so can wade in deeper water.
- ABSOLUTELY kick up rocks on the backside with the sole design that I get rocks in the shoe every 5~10 min!! Very annoying. HAVE to get gaiters to keep rocks out!!
- treads seem shallow and wearing faster than expected. Yet can't imaging deeper treads because of this being a light hiker/ running shoe....
- got to come up with better graphics and color combinations on these shoes...

Entry into the shoe is tedious. The loop on the heel feels as though it will rip when tugging on it. Using a large, metal shoehorn requires less pulling, tugging and lace adjustment. Once on, the shoe feels quite comfortable. No leaks have been found after walking in or around shallow streams.

These shoes are basically all season tires for your feet. The fit and support of the mid is wonderful. It has the proper shape to make for a fairly comfortable flex at the ankle. This is what I consider to be the weakest compromise of mid style shoes. The grip is excellent and has that great signature Altra toebox. Haven't put enough consecutive miles on them to learn what its like in more intensive situations but good so far.
Be aware that these are the RSM (Rain Snow Mud) version which adds extra waterproofing and resistance as the cost of breathability. Although this is the case, it was more "modestly" warm rather then a pure boiler room. If you are in a strictly dry region or are more of a seasonal activist, stick with the mesh version.
If I could identify one con thus far it would be the noise the material of the upper makes when you walk. This seems like the result of the multi-layered RSM material... an incredibly mild annoyance if at all.

After decades of wearing Keens for their durability and wide boot toe area (toes are made to be wiggled), I've switched to Altra a few years ago, for their wide toe area also, but a more comfortable fit. This is my second Altra but first with a boot. I find them very comfortable and hold the trail well. I am a photographer, and I never know where I might find myself, so I need comfortable, durable, and good grip on ANY surface whether I am on city sidewalks, a muddy trail, or up a cliff on stones and gravel. I got these during a winter-over in Michigan, and wore these for a few days before packing them up for Spring to arrive, since I enjoy a heavier boot for snow/winter use. I am in WNY now and find these to be very good on my feet (so far) and am hoping the boot material(s) will last.

More than likely the most comfortable boot/shoe I've had. Straight out of the box they fit & feel great. Light. Shock absorbing. Comfortable. Durability TBD. I'm 50 & have hardware in my back, pelvis & ankle. It takes so little energy to drive these boots, and they absorb the impact so well, that I was able to immediately add a mile to my daily fitness.

I wanted to like these. I have a pair of Altra casual shoes that fit me well. These, however, are difficult to take off and put on. The top set of eyelets (or two) should be hooks, instead - that would make a significant difference in ease of getting your feet out of them. I'm a landscape professional and I go through LOTS of boots each year. These will probably last a long time because I only wear them two or three times a month. Would not buy again.

I have always struggled finding shoes that don't cause discomfort or take ages to break in. I got my first pair of altras in the spring for hiking and can't imagine squeezing my feet into the prisons I used to wear! I got these shoes for winter hiking thinking they'd be great for snow. After 60 km the waterproofing is cracked off where my big toe meets the metatarsal on both shoes. I bought some tent seam sealer and hope it works to re-waterproof the shoes because they're so comfy. Would also be nice if there was a speed lacing system since it's a huge hassle to get these on and off.

... because I can't get them off! Got these on clearance bc I have Altra runners that ease my foot pain. These feel okay, but are VERY difficult to get my feet into and just as hard to get off. Even when I loosen the laces almost completely, its still hard to squeeze my normal size feet into them.
Anyhow, I only bought them for traipsing around the woods and fields (Im not a runner). Padded enough under foot, but oddly my plantar fasciitis has not responded very well yet, but same was the case with other shoes that do help, but the jury is still out on that.

I wear these for walking my dog in wet grass. The first time I wore them I felt water leak into my left shoe. But left shoe only. I called up Altra and they quickly replaced them. But guess what? The new pair leaks water as well. And with about 3 miles in the shoes. And I'm not walking in standing water or creeks etc. Pros: extremely light. Cons: not waterproof.

I wanted to love these boots, I really did. They fit amazingly well in the heel and toe box. The cushioning is great and they seem like they would have tons of grip. The deal breaker for me was that they were extremely tight in the tongue area. I loosened the laces as much possible and use my thinnest sock. They were STILL too tight. They fit GREAT everywhere else. I guess I just have a beefy top foot. Having kept boots that I loved in the past that had one small comfort issue has taught me my lesson and I'm unfortunately returning them. Give them a shot, hopefully they will work for you

These do not feel as comfortable as the Lone Peak 3's. My biggest issue is the space around the big toe and "knuckle" of the big toe was too small for my feet, so it hurts to wear these. The Lone Peak 3's had some more room in that area. The shiny waterproofing layer is also different, it looks fugly compared to last years' model and I would not wear these around town like I do with the 3's.

I had a pair of Lone Peak 3s that gave up being waterproof, so Altra sent me a pair of these.
THANK YOU ALTRA!
These boots have a cushier mid and super grippy rubber, so that's been awesome. The tongue isn't padded, which I find very uncomfortable unless wearing very thick hiking socks. Ankle support continues to be good, but I wouldn't say it's on the level of the Lone Peak 3s. These boots also feel larger than the 3s but are also lighter. After less than a month of VERY light use (i.e. walking the dog in the rain), they've stopped keeping out water.

Purchased my first set last summer for work. I work outdoors most of the summer hiking in rough rocky terrain in SE Oregon and thought I would try the RSM. At first they were great, but after about a week the toe guard for both shoes began to peal off and then the insoles began to delaminate. I emailed Altra and they sent me another pair (thank you) and planned to save them for this fall to use on my Snake River elk hunt. Had snow and cold weather and the hiking to my spike camp from the river bottom with a full pack was tough. The shoes again started out great and I believe outperformed my friends more expensive leather boots, however by the end of the week they began to have the same problems as the first pair. As others mentioned the waterproof material does not hold up and after a few days of hard use they leak.
The potential for a great shoe is there, but improvements are needed before giving this shoe a 5.
