This was a great backpack that I got for my trip to Thailand. It has so many great compartments for storing different things like your valuables, documents, snacks, items that are sensitive to scratches, easily accessible items. The only design flaw is that if your two front verticle zippers are not fully zipped, they will unzip themselves if you pick up the handle in the middle of the front.

This is our favorite backpack. Very sturdy and holds a ton. However, the gray/black surge pic is misleading. It's really a super dark gray and a black and I couldn't even tell where one stopped and the other started

I use this bag for business travel. Needed more space than my Briggs and Riley provided. Great work bag for 1-2 day trips.

My kids don't have lockers in Middle School and they have to carry everything! This has been a great bag for my daughter and takes the strain off her back. My son is starting MS so we bought him one for graduation!

This back is very roomy and has two large compartments. I feel like it holds more than it looks like it would without appearing too bulky. I like all the extra compartments to help keep me organized. I am using this to carry all my high school textbooks because my locker is too far away to get to between classes. The fabric is very sturdy and the zippers seem like they will stand up to years of use - that's what gave out on my last backpack. I've only had this for 10 days but so far I am very happy!

The zinc gray was much darker than pictured on the website, but the bag is terrific otherwise! Supportive straps, reinforced handles, and easy-to-access pockets are all pros. I also think this bag in a darker color is sufficiently professional-looking for the office. Bought this bag to replace my 4+ year-old recon backpack, which served me well but lacked the reinforced top handle I like to use when carrying my backpack by my side on the subway. Although this is one of the higher-volume backpacks offered, the collapsability keeps it looking sleek and slim.

I use this backpack on a daily basis. It is roomy, durable, and very accommodating. When packing the bag, beware of weight distribution. Since there is more weight at the top of my bag, it does fall forward when unbalanced. This bag is a good size for 99% of college students. It even accommodates my 2014 15-inch MacBook Pro!

Great feel. Room for everything and then a little extra on top of that. Second time buying this model highly recommend it.

When it comes to bags and backpacks I will spend weeks pouring over reviews and capacity and pockets and try to zoon in on every part of a bag because and IT guy I am always carrying my office on my back. The dedicated computer bags markerted at my industry and lackluster at best. I have had them all. It has come down to Timbuk2 and North Face. After a slew of Timbuk2 bags I went back to North Face after still having an old recon bag that has lasted forever. That back has now become my hurricane go bag because I know it will hold up. I can easily fill up this backpack and everything has a place. It's comfy even when fully loaded. I plan to use this as a travel bag too as it is large enough to do so. I am really excited about the future of this bag and me.

I commute/fly for work twice a month. This backpack is essentially my desk/office. It is roomy and can accommodate all of my electronics and any papers I need to carry with me. It also has great space for an extra rain jacket, hat, etc. I have also used this backpack to travel for personal/fun trips on weekends. Again, plenty of room for everything. It is lightweight, sturdy and it has enough pockets/sleeves to accommodate everything without damage to anything. I would highly recommend. I have had several commuter bags in the past and this is by far the best.

I use this bag for holding a laptop/binder and various things that I take to work. The bag is roomy enough to hold all of my dslr gear when going out to shoot. The bottle holders on the sides are awesome, they stretch a bunch and can easily accommodate my 40oz hydroflask.

I owned Surge 2 for 5 years before buying this one. And I must say it is better in almost every sense. Waist band is detachable, which is good, since I used it maybe twice in 5 years. Front compartment became smaller, and middle compartment even bigger. One of the organisational compartments moved into the middle one. And there is an additional partition in back compartment, so your laptop and folders can be kept separate.
Additional front handle is seldom useful during flights, when you want to pull the bag from under the seat.
Only downside is that Surge 2 had a bit more organisational compartments. Wish there was at least one or two more to keep everything well organised.

Works well for the job, abundance of space, TSA friendly and easy to carry with the front handle during airport security checks. The fleece lined pockets feel like they'd get dirty quick.

After purchasing multiple backpacks (North Face, Osprey, SwissGear, etc.) to test, I decided to go with the Surge. The Osprey was a close second, but the features and design of the Surge ultimately won. Not only do I love the color, but the Surge was clearly designed with details in mind. The back compartment is large and padded enough to hold my laptop, tablet, and miscellaneous papers. The midsection holds quite a bit, including clothes and books. The backpack feels strong and sturdy with great padding on the straps and back panel. The fleece and tech pockets are great for my pens, chargers, and other small items.

I bought this backpack to replace another that I have had for 14 years. Not disappointed. The organizer in the back for my laptop and tablet is ideal. The lay flat design allows me to pack documents as well without ruining the edges. Lots of pockets with felt lining to protect the finish on my most delicate devices. Compresses well with little in the main pocket, but has more then enough room when you really need it.

First Northface backpack and I will now never another brand. I use to buy Oakley backpacks but this Northface backpack is better quality and design. It it very room but still easy to travel with through airports. It also is very comfortable if you have to carry your backpack longer distances.
