Used this backpack for school, tavel, and work with no damage to any part of the backpack. It's comfortable, full of room, and the laptop/tablet pocket has protected my laptop. A chihuahua raised its leg on it while I was in Mexico and I was able to hand wash the odor out of it. The black color has helped to hide all signs of wear. The only problem I have with the backpack is that the water bottle pouch is too shallow and stretchy to hold the larger/taller water bottles that are popular today. Hopefully that problem has been addressed with the newer models. The backpack has been updated since I bought it 7 years ago so I can't speak to its current quality, but I would recommend this backpack to anyone.

It looks even better in person. My boyfriend loves it. He mostly uses it for travel which we do a lot of. He was debating but on colors for awhile but ended up going with black/grey.

OMG. So, this is my 3rd major NF backpack. My first was the Borealis (with cool combination colors like teal, red and this almost navy blue). Next, I purchased the Big Shot but because I LOVED my Borealis so much, I didn't really get the chance to use before giving it my one of my nephews. After the constant yearly use of my Borealis, mixed with all the dirtyNESS on it, I was ready for a new bag. When I saw the Recon, I thought this was the one until my eyes couldn't get off the Surge. I love the overall look of the bag. The two front pockets are very convenient and seriously deep for stowing all types of things. the zip opening closest to the front of the bag is very room, giving additional pockets for stowing your phone, pens/pencils, etc. etc. There's also a larger space (in that same zipper opening) where you can put something as big as a NF down jacket. Next is the second zipped opening where there's additional space and the built in sleeve for stowing your laptop. There's also a second tight spot where you can put another device like an iPad. Towards the top is a smaller compartment that is excellent for things like sunglass, keys, AirPods, or maybe even our iPhone. Overall, the simplicity on the front of the bag is what caught my eye. If you're familiar with the Borealis and all those strings, etc on the front, you can understand why I like the clean front where things cannot get caught in the string. I would recommend this bag for so many reasons.

I got this backpack as a gift to replace my everyday use backpack; the Surge looks stylish, has a massive main compartment, and a good amount of smaller pockets. I love that this has outside pocket for water bottles, as I feel any backpack without it is not suited for a commuter. I wish that the chest-strap was removable as I personally find it to be awkward and the strap dangles when not connected. Also, I find that it could a few more pockets like the front one with holster for pens and such, but it is still a great option for commuters.

Bought this for my 9th grader. He wanted a roomy bag to be able to carry all of his binders and books to and from school. He is very happy with the bag. Has a lot of room for his things. Seems to be well made (only time will tell the durability). Glad we found this bag!

I keep going back to this backpack, and the latest model 2018 is even closer to perfection. While it's definitely not the best daypack for some specific needs like hiking, overall, I needed a backpack which would answer all my needs(office, city commute, day hikes), and it looks like this is the one. Super comfortable, great compartments and organization (I carry two laptops - one for work and an ultrabook). The back support is really good and all the straps are sturdy and well built. Looks pretty good too - classical look nothing bizarre and fits well. I've tried many many other bags including competition - they all have cons and pros but couldn't find anything as versatile and well built as the Surge. If I had to complain about something it would probably be the weight - I wish it was about 200 gr. lighter. But nothing serious considering the quality materials and the great back support - it's totally worth it.

I'm a full time student and work full time as well. Before each day, I'm able to fit my work clothes, workout clothes, computer, tablet, textbooks, headphones, chargers, water bottle, and still have additional room for more storage. It's a lifesaver being able to carry all of my belongings in one pack and still have extra space. The chest strap and waist strap alleviate back pain that I found with most other backpacks. The straps and zippers are of high quality and extremely durable - withstanding rainfall as well. I have tried several other backpacks and wish I would have tried this one sooner. Would definitely recommend to anyone who may be on the fence. You can take this pack anywhere!

I am a college student, and I was looking for a good backpack for myself from the past few months. I did some research and found about the Northface backpacks such as the Surge and the Recon, and I decided to go with the surge backpack. This backpack is magnificent since it is made off a good quality fiber, lightweight, plenty zippers, and a very organized backpack overall. I am pleased that I brought this backpack and I highly recommend this backpack to any college student who is looking for good quality and durable backpack.

Bought this backpack to travel to Spain. Perfect carry on size with a lot of room. Love the spot for my laptop and ipad. The felt lined pockets are awesome! Very comfortable on my shoulders and is the best backpack I've owned!

I purchased my husband this backpack to replace the one that was flooded out during this past rainy season. He loves it and this brand. Very sturdy , holds a lot of things (heavy things too). No complaints, in fact, my husband loves this backpack more than his old one.

Purchased as a gift for my brother who is going back to school. He keeps sending me photos of new pockets he's finding. He's happy so I'm happy. Construction on the bag is what you would expect from a company like TNF.

I bought this backpack for my husband to use as his flight bag (aviation, not as in running off quickly). He moved his things into immediately so I wouldn't steal it from him. So far he likes it very much and it fits all of his gear very nicely while keeping everything accessible as it needs to be while flying.

I work at a camp and I use this pack to carry everything I need all day. All of the different compartments are convenient and helps keep my stuff organized. Also, the size for me is just right. Lots of space without being too big. It seems pretty durable. I beat it up all day everyday and it still looks new, besides the dust and dirt on it. One of the best packs I've owned.

I bought this for my son because he is a student and needs room for not only his books but also his laptop. Our family has purchased numerous North Face packs over the years and their durability is second to none. This one is perfect for students who want to fit everything they need in one pack.

I bought this as a gift for my son going off to college next year. In high school he has been using sport specific backpacks (Speedo for swimming, Nike for basketball), but he will need a pack for next year that will work for all over campus. Those other backpacks are fine for high school for limited walking. We love the quality of North Face and this pack looks great - it should last him through college. He already took it out on a day trip so I know he likes the look of it. An added bonus is that he will look great in his coordinating North Face jacket!

My son has had if not the same model (or similar) since about 2009. Only one. This was on his Xmas list this year and I thought, replace every 9 years, what a great backpak. Btw, he used his daily through 4 yeats of high school, 4 years of college and now for visiting parents. Good product,

I use this backpack nearly daily for work and short personal trips. Holds my MacBook and an iPad, plenty of spots for cords and such. For work, 24 hour shifts, I carry the MacBook, chargers, 2-3 T-shirts and, changes of socks and such. Plenty of room for everything. Absolutely worth the money.
