I bought my first Surge bag in 2007 and it is still my go to hiking bag now. Since it's used for outdoor activities it wasn't the best bag to take to meetings with clients so I ordered the new version hoping it would be just as good as my classic one. Can say I was not disappointed. I love the new vented back and the addition of tablet pockets. For work every day, I have 2 sets of headphones, a macbook pro, ipad pro, notebook, sunglasses, and books. Everything has a place and pack is lightweight and stays in place.
Another winner for The North Face.

Verified PurchaseReview for Zappos VIP Points(What's this?)
I purchased this backpack for my teenage son, i normally would never pay over $100.00 for a backpack..but when we received it, the quality is 5 star, the inside pockets, outside pockets, and zippers are quality which for me is surprising- for a backpack..he plays sports so I’m sure he will toss it around the lockers etc. I have no worries concerning breakage.

This is a great product I have previously owned a surge backpack and decided to get a new one. However, the color pictured is not the same as the backpack delivered. I got the backpack in cosmic blue/ asphalt grey.
while in the picture it appears as though the entire backpack is blue with small grey details the backpack appears as the picture attached. Great backpack though. I might return for a different color as I am not a fan of the white logo.

I bought one of these bags in college to haul around my books almost 10 years ago, and have used it for travel, work, and everything in between since. My boyfriend had been wanted a larger backpack to use for traveling that could also securely hold his laptop, so I bought this as a birthday gift for him and he absolutely loves it! Buy one of these and they will easily last a decade or more, and hold up extremely well all the while.

Thank you North Face for creating one of the few products that I know can handle the test of time. Our son got his first North Face backpack for high school 9 years ago-- it survived both high school and college... and just now is starting to wear out. Our oldest daughter has used hers for 6 years-- and it is just starting to wear out. Our middle daughter is only three years into using hers, so it is in great shape. And now today-- I purchased our youngest her first North Face backpack for high school. Stay tuned. These backpacks have carried more than their backs should carry!! Not only are they are built to last--they are comfortable and keep them organized!! Thank you!!

I am not saying don't buy this product, hence why I am giving a 5 star review. HOWEVER, my brother wanted a grey and black colored one, but when we got it in mail, we both got immediately upset that the Northface sent us the wrong color one! It was all black! But when we looked carefully, it had a dark grey tone in the center and the rest was black. In the picture, the contrast is very evident, but in person, you can barely tell! It is a great backpack, great brand, the quality reflects the price you pay for. But if you want the grey/black, just know that it doesn't look anything like the picture. We are keeping the backpack, it actually looks better, but I thought I should share this note here!

I have only been able to test this backpack the past week but I can tell that the quality is great and it transfers the weight well. It has a ton of room and I usually have a lot of books plus a laptop in my bag and I still have room for more things. Highly recommend.

I am a teacher who bought this to serve as my desk when I change classrooms all day. So far it has been fantastic, however, we will see how it stands up in the long term.

I seriously love this backpack. I have never had one that had so many well-designed compartments. Let's see, it has a thin and stiff laptop/tablet compartment, big main compartment, fleece-lined pocket for glasses and delicate things, a small compartment for smaller items with a zipper pocket, two small compartments in the front (vertical zippers in the photos) and two outside pockets for water bottles... It's very roomy, way bigger than I expected. But I got to like it this way. It has adjustable straps on the sides that let you restrict how thick it gets. Additional waist and sternum straps keep it in place when you wear it (good for biking).
The material it's made of is mostly waterproof, although I would not try to wear it without extra protection in a storm. The two handles are very useful, the one on the top is really great and comfortable. Additionally, it looks just fantastic. As for my specific design, the FIR GREEN/NEW TAUPE GREEN color is stylish and uncommon. I have seen it on the street in black and it looks great too. Plus all the new colors available now, I think you can't really choose a wrong one here.
Now as for the cons, I do find the back panel quite stiff and not adjusting to the back, which is a side-effect of the laptop protection. It is also quite heavy itself. I have not made my opinion yet regarding the shoulder straps as they can get a bit uncomfortable with time. It might be however caused by the fact that I have never been carrying so many things on my back (all this space needs to be filled!). So you might think they are actually well-designed, considering that I get tired only after a time. Both the back panel and the shoulder straps are definitely nicely breathable.
Overall, if you are looking for a big backpack, I can only recommend it. It's a fantastic every-day companion.

This is one of the best backpacks on the market. Wide straps designed for comfort, multiple laptop carrier, multiple interior and exterior pockets, water bottle holder/ umbrella on both sides. Extremely well made and super strong support for your back! Worth the extra bucks - a cut above the rest!

I scoured the internet for the perfect bag for travel/carry-on. I needed something to accommodate work and life at the same time - aka my laptop and all my kids' stuff! Was looking for something not too big, but also that would safely hold my laptop along with kids' change of clothes, snacks, ipads, headphones, etc. I absolutely love all the pockets and how accessible everything is. Laptop slides in and out very easily and has sufficient padding. I had the bag packed almost to its max and it still easily slid under the airline seat. The straps are comfortable and my shoulders didn't hurt at all after carrying this around most of the day (I'm 5'4" female). I love the grey color and initially was looking at the "women's" version, but didn't like the grey combined with the plum. I highly recommend this bag, it made my travel so much more manageable.

Great for carrying A LOT of gear! Fits my laptop, large tablet, lots of books or gear, and is still easy to carry. The color is nowhere near that of the picture (I got the zinc grey, and it is nearly black), but not really a big deal. I have used this bag to travel and commute, and it has performed very well. The straps can be a little uncomfortable, but if you get them adjusted just right, they are good.
