NOT WATER PROOF! As soon as I put these on I was pleased with the fit and arch. The main reason I bought them and paid the higher price was because they are waterproof. However moisture just pours in from the stitching. The synthetic shoe material itself is thin compared to leather shoes this is not a problem if the stitching is sealed. These are defective or there is a serious design error. First walk out the door into grass with dew and my feet were wet. I unfortunately ordered another pair the moment I felt the fit of first pair. Will contact manufacturer or Zappos. With any luck it’s just a defect and new pair still in transit are not.

Har haft den h?r modellen tidigare och slitit ut tv? par. Men nu k?pte jag en ny igen och det ?r en helt annan sko. K?nns som budgetmodellerna. H?rdare. Plastigare. Den gamla var s? mjuk och fin. Redan fr?n start.
Gick s?nder lite i tyget under sn?rningen men det g?r inget. Sn?lla vill ha tillbaks gamla modellen. F?r k?ra med mina sommar xa pro 3d ett tag till. Dom ?r bra.

The X Ultra 3 (non Gore-tex version) would be the best hiking shoe on the market if Salomon replaced the ridiculous quick lace system with traditional laces. There simply isn't a value case for a rapid lacing system on a hiking shoes, and problems are numerous:
1. You can't dial in the fit or comfort. In order to get a snug fit in the heel, you have to tighten the entire shoe which leads to discomfort and tightness in the forefoot. With traditional laces, you can simply tie off the forefoot and cinch down the heel.
2. My laces broke long before the shoes wore out. Making matters worse, mine broke 4 days into a 6 day backcountry trip and I walked the rest of the trip on jerry rigged shoes (read: less support, higher risk on ankle injury). The shoes have less than 125 miles on them and are otherwise in good condition. Unless you're Macgyver, you'll need to replace the shoes when the laces break. Good for shareholders, bad for consumers and the environment.
3. The lock mechanism doesn't stay tight, requiring frequent re-adjustment. This is especially inconvenient when you're wearing gaiters and a pack.
4. When the toggle pops out of the pocket on the tongue, it flops around. A minor point, but again something you would not have to deal with with traditional laces.
So in my assessment, you gain nothing from the quick lace system (do seconds really matter when hiking?). I wish Salomon would innovate in areas that truly contribute to fit, performance and function versus gimmicks. They have an outstanding shoe with the X Ultra that they've made notably worse with the quick laces.
Regarding size and fit: the laces alone prevent you from getting the best fit. I find the shoes to be relatively wide in the heel, slightly narrow to normal at the forefoot and they have a good toe box that allows your toes to splay. They run true to size, I generally size up 1/2 size in running and trail shoes and no exception here. Durability would be 4 or 5 stars if they had traditional laces. I have a very normal foot and fit most brands without difficulty.

Not sure what Salomon is thinking, but in my opinion quicklaces have no room whatsoever on a hiking shoe. They make it difficult to tighten and loosen things selectively, and are a failure liability in the field at several points. If you prefer a super tight lacing like I do, the tightening buckle slips and does not hold proper tension. Having to roll down the excess lace is annoying to no end. After a month or two of aggressive tightening the buckle is likely to break, possibly leaving you stranded in the middle of nowhere. The thin kevlar laces run inside plastic inserts to protect the eyelets. Unfortunately the plastic inserts are prone to breaking, as one of the previous reviewers noted. With standard laces this would be a 5 star shoe. I am being generous when I give the quicklace version 2 starts. For the moment I have opted for the older Ultra Prime which thankfully uses conventional laces. If you buy this shoe I suggest that you cut off the kevlar laces, break off the eyelet plastic inserts with a pair of flat-nosed pliers, and use a pair of conventional round laces (something in the 42-48" should work). Hopefully Salomon takes user feedback into consideration when they start working on the Ultra 4. I cannot see the Ultra 3 go away soon enough.

I've bought them a few weeks ago ,and have walked about 10 hours in them now. They are very comfortable and I feel safe walking in steep terrain in them. But they have a problem. Only after a few times of use, two of the metal fasteners for the shoelaces are broken. And I did not use much force tightening the laces. I recon it's just a mater of time of time before the last two breaks. I managed to "fix" it temporarily it with some plastic strips, but that's not how it should be on these rater expensive shoes.

Made the GTX in wide but not this version? Not a great design decision since if we're used to the GTX we'd want a summer shoe in wide but there isn't one.

I bought Salomon X Ultra shoes 8 years ago, and loved so much how comfortable they were that decided to buy them again. This new version is not as good, not as comfortable, the run narrower and tight, even difficult to put them on. I had the non-goretex version and loved how cool they were in the summer. Wore them a lot of film shoots, where you stand all day. Not the new version. I've been a Salomon fan for many years, hiking shoes, snow boots, jackets, but I'll start looking to some other brands. Very disappointed.

My decision to go with Salomon's X Ultra 3 for a 580 mile thru hike of New York's Finger Lakes Trail turned out to be a mistake and a waste of good money. The shoes gave me blisters in areas I've never experienced before and after 350 trail miles, adding insult to injury, deteriorated to the point that they had to be replaced. Here's what happened: 1) After 120 miles a shoe lace frayed at the bottom on one of the shoes and exposed kevlar threads began cutting into the lace loop. To keep the lace from cutting through I reinforced the loop by sewing it with dental floss and taping the frayed lace area with duct tape. 2) After 200 miles the same thing happened to the other shoe. 3) At 285 miles I replaced the laces using a replacement lace kit. 4) At 325 miles the laces cut through the bottom loops that I had tried to save earlier. 5) At 350 miles the top fabric (over toes) on one shoe ripped and opened up a 1.5" gash. Examining of the other shoe revealed it wouldn't be long before it ripped too. At 350 miles I was forced off the trail to buy a different brand hiking shoe in order to continue. To be fair the trail was muddy and wet all the time and so were the shoes. But hiking shoes are supposed to hold up to wet, muddy, conditions. Aren't they?

Bought these and Mission X 3s trying to decide on a single pair to wear for a trip to Scotland. Wasn't looking for GTX version (have those in X Ultra 2 mid model already). Wanted the Missions to be the ones, but had to return 2 different pair as right foot on both had similar problems to the X Ultra 3s I detail below. Kept the X Ultra 3s, have had them for 2 weeks now hoping my initial perception of the fit of the shoe would improve. I'm a size 9 1/2 in all my other Salomons. On these X Ultra 3s the left foot shoe fits perfect, snug and comfortable all over with ample room for movement in forefoot and nice arch support. The right foot shoe, however, is another monster altogether. It's gappy in forefoot with too much side to side movement. The arch feels like it's in the wrong spot on my foot. Shoe is marked as 9.5 but likely is not. And the crux is the heel cup, bad slippage and feels like plastic mold of the heel cup is curved inward rubbing on outside just below ankle. Excess stitching on left underside of tongue of right foot shoe creates a rub hot spot. Was hoping these could be the shoes for the 2 week trip, but I can't even wear them for an hour without wanting to get the right shoe off my foot. Quality control issue for sure, expect better Salomon. I can rate the comfort and fit of the left shoe as 4 stars, the right shoe gets 0. Can't wear just the left shoe.......
