Our almost 15 year old son just went to sleep away camp in the Rockies in Colorado. We bought these for him to take with him as a last minute purchase since he had recently grown out of everything he owned. He LOVED these shoes and wore them all week long (despite not being able to break them in beforehand), including a 3am hike up the mountain to watch the sunset, then back down again. Highly recommend. I have Salomon hiking shoes but these are his first and he loves them.

I have owned these shoes for 2 months and have enjoyed them. I was a bit hesitant due to the speed laces and not having traditional laces. I have a narrow foot and traditional laces seem to snug up better than previous use of the speed laces. But, I have adjusted and like them.

Wore out a pair of Salomons after 4 years & figured it was time for an update. Good quality and love the lace up system.

When I first received the X Ultra 3, I wasn't excited about the laces but after using them a few times I now love them. I replaced the footbed with an after market footbed which makes the shoe even more comfortable.

Nice shoe, but I did not like the lacing system. Ultimately, that was the deciding factor and I returned them.
I'd also recommend:
I like the Garmont hiking brand.

Zappos service is great as always. This was my second pair of Salomon shoes, an far upgrade from X Crests. I tend avoid Gore-Tex/similar equipped shoes, which thankfully these are not. I also do not like hiking-boot tall versions of trail shoes. The size I selected fit pretty good out of the box and better after some breaking in. There was not enough arch support to my liking so I pulled out Salomon's insoles. Superfeet flex thin insoles helped out a bunch although at an extra cost. Salomon's quicklaces took some getting used to but by now I very much enjoy those. The sensifit construction is the best part since it is unlike traditional separate-tongue construction. It is like a boot liner that you slip into then tighten with the quicklaces. By far my favorite aspect of these and very comfortable. I need another pair of these.

Very comfortable shoe but if you like to lace your shoes up tight these shoes are not for you. The quick tie thing is junk as far as I am concerned.

Light weight and good fit for me. Run a little narrow so not a great choice if you have wide feet,

These shoes seemed like the ticket for me. Hikers, workwear, all-around. They seem nice, well-built, great soles. I'm not a big fan of GTX shoes so I was excited to find these in non-waterproof version. I live in the inland northwest where it's hot and dry in the summer and I'd rather my feet breath well than try to convince myself that waterproof low-tops are actually effective and justify the additional cost. Anyhow, seemed good - I just couldn't get the right fit. Fit was okay for my narrow-to-average foot. I don't know if I've got skinny ankles or what, but I couldn't lock them down with this lacing system and my heels slipped a fair amount. I returned them.

Love the shoe...HATE THE LACES. I've owned at least 6 pairs of Salomon hiking shoes, but without the option of regular laces I will not buy another pair. I am now looking for a replacement- very disappointed because I have loved these shoes.

I am a fan of Salomon goods. These shoes meet all my requirements in a light hiker. They fit well, are light, great sole. My only complaint is the ridiculous lacing system. It's just a bad idea, period. Everyone knows how to tie a shoe, so there's no need to try and "fix" that. The quick lace system is simply inferior to a conventional lace system. With regular laces I can make adjustments to tightness and specific areas of the shoe. I can replace them easily when they break as well. Because these laces are in essence a draw string, they can only be tightened from the top. Furthermore, because these laces are fine like wire, they dig into the shoe more, specifically up top. So I can't have them tightened enough without hurting my foot. I need them tight enough for hiking. Additionally, I find the lacing garage itself to be a slight encumbrance. I can't say enough bad things about this lacing system. Solomon, I urge you to replace this lacing system with a conventional one. There is no downside to this as I am sure no one will drop the shoe because they missed the this backwards system. The plus side is you will gain more advocates of this shoe whose option of this shoe is high except for the lacing system. Unfortunately, these are going back.

Liked everything about the shoe except... it felt about 1/2 a size small, which may just be me since no other reviewers seem to have the same experience. Exchanging for next size, hoping that will work.

For reference, I am 5' 11 160 LBS and wear a men's size 12 in Salomon shoes. Also, I am avid trail runner and and hiker. I live in Colorado and run and hike on CO's trails year-round. My preferred shoe for trail running is the Speedcross, as I have worn through many pairs over the years. For light hiking, I have mostly used the XA Pro 3D. Similarly, I have owned and worn through many pairs of the various versions of this shoe(XA Pro 3D) throughout the years. I recently purchased a pair of the X Ultra 3 in the Poseidon blue colourway and have gone on several hikes, ranging from four to seven miles, on both dry and snow packed trails. Since this shoes is included in Salomon's 'Hiking Shoe' category, as is the XA Pro 3D(Hiking & Trail Running), my review of this shoe will be in comparison to the XA Pro 3D, since I feel they are very similar. Fit: Compared to the XA Pro 3D, this shoe(X Ultra 3) has more length and width in the toe box area. This extra room is very much appreciated. I feel the current and previous couple versions of the XA Pro 3D are about 1/4 to a 1/2 size short in length in size 12. This is not the case with the X Ultra 3 -- plenty of room in the toe box area. Also, overall, this shoe doesn't feel as narrow as the XA Pro 3Ds. I would not characterize this shoe as wide, but it does have more room than the XA Pro 3Ds. Lastly, the heel area has more room as well. In street shoes, I wear 11.5 B(narrow). So for me, the heel pocket of the X Ultra 3 feels less secure. In other words, my heel doesn't feel as locked-down as it does in the XA Pro 3D. I do experience a little heel slippage with this shoe. Sole: The tread on the X Ultra 3 is superior to the XA Pro 3D. The lugs are deeper. As a result, the shoe grips better in all conditions - loose hard-packed dirt, wet snow, and hard-packed snow and ice. Also, the deeper lugs provide for a more cushioned feel to the shoe. I can hike more miles in this shoe and experience less foot fatigue and soreness. I suppose the deeper, beefier lug pattern also adds more weight to the shoe. This is not a concern for me, as I am willing to trade weight for the improved grip and cushion. Feel: The X Ultra 3 is a beefier shoe compared to the XA Pro 3D. I know that the XA Pro 3D is also marketed as a 'Trail Running' shoe, but I have found it to be too clunky for running. I use the Speedcross specifically for trail running. However, compared to the X Ultra 3, the XA Pro 3D feels more nimble, more maneuverable and smoother than the X Ultra 3. For this reason, in my opinion, the X Ultra 3 is best as a low-top hiking shoe or general purpose shoe. Overall, the X Ultra 3 hiking shoe is an excellent choice for day hikes or perhaps even through hiking. The extra room in the toe box, the aggressive lugs on the sole provides a sure grip in all conditions and added cushions for long days. Some may not appreciate extra room in the heel area and width in the last, especially if you have grown accustomed to the signature Salomon narrow performance feel of their other offerings. However, the X Ultra 3s is a solid, beefy, grippy, cushioned, stable, low-top hiking shoe that can handle any trail condition.

Note that there is a very elastic stretchy pocket near the lace tightener where you are meant to hide the laces after tightening.. I too tripped until I found this!!

Smart looking and comfortable but, for me, they were too wide in the heel area resulting in heel slip when I walk.Too bad. I really liked them otherwise,
