Not at all the same shoe at all as version 1. Look at the picture below - it's easy to tell they are not the same width or even the same shoe. I bought white - what's with the gray? I bought 4 pairs of the version 1 of NB 840 in 8.5D and LOVED them. I wish I had bought more! Why did New Balance change this shoe? The reviews said it was among their most walking popular shoes! Before ordering, I called Zappos and asked if the version 2 was the same - they said they thought they were and said I could always return them. What a waste of time to order these. Side by side it is obviously not as wide as the previous version. When I put it on, the inside insert is rock hard - I put the version 1 on and there is a nice give to it. I'm so bummed - now I need to waste time going to UPS to return them. It's unfortunate that Zappos customer service cannot tell you anything about a product they sell and how it compares to a previous model. Sure it's nice to have free returns - but let's save the customer (and the planet) the time, gas, and effort of buying and returning the shoe in the first place. I'll go to an actual store next time. I have small (size 6) very wide (EE) feet with high arches. I wear orthotics. I have an ankle problem. I LOVE these New Balance shoes because they have a nice round toe box, are deep enough to accommodate my orthotics, have good cushioning, and look good. The lovely dove gray color goes with everything. This model is taking the place of my 928's (which are no longer made) and the 877's, which don't have enough cushioning on the sole. A truly superior shoe. NB has hit it out of the ballpark on this one! Stock up before they decide to redesign or discontinue it.

A godsend! Before I tried these on yesterday I'd given up hope of ever finding shoes that would let me actually enjoy being on my feet. A combination of foot issues has sidelined me for decades. Hammer toes, bunions, a great toe that had to be surgically shortened many years ago due to injury. A Haglund's deformity at the back of one heel that frayed my achilles tendon. I've often wished I could have two foot transplants. The pair I was issued are worthless. But today I'm nearly giddy about having found these shoes. My feet feel like they're being swaddled in a feather bed. I can wiggle my toes and nothing hurts. I can walk without being rubbed the wrong way. My feet feel well-loved and protected. I'm excited about taking them out for a walk - just for the sheer pleasure of walking without insufferable discomfort. Granted, it's still too soon to tell if this honeymoon will last. But I'm feeling cautiously optimistic. No style points for these guys. I must look like I'm wearing Mickey Mouse shoes. But ask me if I care.

I loved this shoe, very comfortable but after wearing for a couple of weeks I noticed the right shoe was wearing very fast and pretty soon that area had a huge hole in it. I had to put a piece of duct tape on the inside to keep my toe in. The left shoe was fine but the right was terriable! I'v never had this happen before. I bought these shoes in June but did not start wearing till the end of Sept. after reading the return policy it doesn't look like I can exchange them. A lot of money for the 3 months I was able to wear them:(

I bought them about 2 months ago and now I see a tiny hole above my big toe forming, I can't afford to buy new shoes every 2 months, never had this happen before at least not so soon, thought I'd have these for a year or at least 6 months before needing new ones, can't work in shoes with a hole in them. I guess the suede like material is a no-no an need reinforced shoe. Anyone have good choice for a wide women's shoes sneaker for walking and standing for hours on hard floor not carpet that will keep my feet comfortable and not painful end of night????

After trying several (as in, close to ten) different brands and styles of tennis shoes, I finally hit the jackpot with these! "It's not you - it's me" definitely factors into my search for shoes; wonky pinky toe on one foot, the need for a tall toe box, flexible but not too flexible ... the list (and frustration) goes on. The moment I put these on however, the search was officially over and I ran to the computer to make sure I'm able to buy at least one backup pair. (in case a new version comes out and I can't get these anymore) Wondrous! I can walk long distances again without wishing I'd brought something along to chop off my aching toes! And now I probably should check to see if I can get a few more pair in different colors ...

I've been wearing these for about three weeks and they're very comfortable. I have a bunion so I ordered an E width. There is enough room to accommodate the bunion, but there is still some rubbing. The canvas-type fabric isn't as forgiving as the mesh fabric on my last pair of NB walkers, but once they are fully broken in I think they'll be fine. A pleasant surprise is that the shoe fits fine on my non-bunion foot, too. The material and construction are quality. I think they will last. The soles are not slick,. The toe box is roomy, and I was able to slip in my orthotics easily. There is reasonable arch support, but its not great. That's why I need the orthotics. I have been able to walk up to 3 miles a day w/out pain, so I'm happy with this purchase.

Love this shoe. Usually I go with a Brooks Ariel but wanted something with a wider toe and my orthotics fit nicely in this shoe. I have every "ailment" out there with my feet...flat, painful, etc....so I have almost given up walking more than a short distance. Am hoping these will fit well enough to try walking a bit more. They aren't exactly the "cutest" or most "stylish" but will deal with it!!!

Not the most stylish looking but given I have an annoying bunion and very wide flat feet, shoes are beyond difficult to find. These shoes enabled my orthotics and fit perfectly. They are very comfortable and I would recommend them to anyone with similar issues.

I have wide feet and flattened arches after years of standing at work and am now getting older. My toes are happy in these shoes as they have plenty of room with the toe box being wider than in most other shoe styles. I am very happy with New Balance WW840V2.

I wore the original new balance 840 for years and was perfectly happy with it. The shoe was redesigned 840 v2 so that there is a bunch of seaming where the small toes hit the shoe. I could tell the difference immediately. I had the area stretched and hoped it would soften/stretch over time but all it has done is injure my small toes and now they hurt. Also the sole of the shoe was changed and that is more narrow than it used to be. I actually compared it with my old pair. This upgrade was a downgrade

Great tennis shoe. Very attractive on the feet. Toe of shoe is nicely shaped. I wear a 9 and 9 fit perfectly. I ordered in Black for a trip to Italy coming up and I did not want to take another pair of shoes. This gives me nice look when I want to dress up with black pants and fancy top. I would recommend to other because the shape of the toe is so nice.

I wear the black leather 840v2 in an 11D because of arthritis. I was hoping that these would feel a little less "orthopedic" for summer but the toe box was much higher/wider. My foot was floating around in it even with my orthotic. I will return for the medium width and hope for the best.

Extremely comfortable...plenty of toe room. I tried these on at the end of the day with medium thickness socks. Perfect. These will be good for my group walks three times a week. Just wish they were available in a shade of blue or in black.

The Best walking shoe ever! Comfortable, true to size, and right width. Because it sells out so fast I usually order 2 pair to always have a spare.

Nice tennis shoes.
