I am writing this review because of all the comments on the calf width. I do not have thin calves but these fit fine. I love the back zip as it is a more streamlined look. Unfortunately for me the 6 was too tight and the 6.5 ended up with my foot sitting in a weird place, sort of not aligned properly to the footbed. The leather is not the softest but its not bad and I think it would soften up over time. The leather is not super refined looking, more like a working boot. I'd recommend.

Gorgeous boots, but I did not like the wider shaft at the ankle. Felt more like cowboy boots. The calves fit great though! I am sad that they weren't quite as "dressy" as I hoped they would be. I will be returning them.

Loved the look of these but were far too narrow for me. I wouldn’t say I have a wide foot. They may have stretched but not enough to be comfortable for me. Beautiful boots though.

First, I’d like to thank Zappos for putting up with me! I have returned so many pairs of boots looking for the right size for my calves. I am 5’4 and 120 lbs. I definitely don’t have super skinny calves, but most boots are made for bigger calves. These Frye’s are the perfect dark brown, with a nice subtle shine. I received many compliments. They are actually more comfortable to walk in than they are to sit in. It pinches my toe a bit, but I am willing to tolerate that. They are not as tight in the calf as I hoped, but they still look good. I have only worn them twice, will write an update after I have worn them longer.

These boots look great. I have a bad back and was looking for boots with a low heel and I could not pass up this deal. Like my other Frye boots with a zipper, it's a bit snug around the back of my foot. The zipper and leather are both stiff. I am hoping they will loosen up over time. I have relatively thin calves and often wear my jeans over my boots so the width of the shaft is not an issue for me. It you have normal - wide calves and want to tuck jeans in, it may be a tight squeeze.

Fit is good. Quality of leather and overall construction and appearance of boots seem excellent. The only issue I have found is that the zipper is hard to pull up and down. The calf fit is snug but it's the difficulty pulling zipper up and down that is the issue, rather than the snugness of calf. Zipper doesn't go up and down easily even with boot off, and the snug fit of calf area when putting on increases the difficulty. Still don't think I would want a wide for me. Feel good when I get them on, but wouldn't want to be in a hurry getting dressed when plan to wear these! My husband suggested lubricating zipper with some lip balm. I did this and has helped some. Maybe over time the zipper will work more easily.

Loved the boots. Was a little sad that there was some damage already. Nothing major just a small spot near the toes already looked like it was peeling.

Overall, I love this boot. I've been looking for a brown tall boot for a long time, and this finally fit the bill. I absolutely love the cognac color - it's a very rich brown, but slightly weathered-looking too. I can dress it up or down. I debated between this style and the Melissa Frye2, without the back zip. Ultimately I opted for this one as it's a slightly taller profile than the Frye2, and is straight across at the knew vs. dipping down in more of a V shape with the Frye2. The leather is excellent quality - it's a little tight right now but I know it'll loosen a bit with wear; otherwise the boot is very true to size. The only reason this gets 4 stars instead of 5 from me is that the back zipper is a little tough to get up and down, especially around the ankle, and the little back snap at the top of the boot, while a cute detail, unsnaps really easily when you cross your legs. It's a minor inconvenience and not enough to outweigh all the other positives of this boot, but it is kind of a pain.

I really wanted to keep these - they are beautiful boots! But the top of the boot shaft is just too wide. I am 5'7'' and 120 lbs. with an athletic build. The description says a 14.75'' boot shaft opening, but it was wider than that. It looks ridiculous when the boots are so much wider than my leg. I don't know why they offer a 'wide calf' option, but not a narrow calf option. This was a really big disappointment and I had to return them. :(

Definitely more narrow than a usual med width. Beautiful quality!!

I love the way these look, unfortunately, I have to return them. I am 5'1 and these come up to right below my kneecap where they rub and it's very uncomfortable. (My fault for being short), The toe box is a tiny bit too narrow and the shaft is a little large around my calves. Totally bummed, the leather and color and style is beautiful.

Calf circumference is too big, although it came up in my search for 14 -14.5" calf circumference search. It's not easy for us "skinny" -- long legged slender :) -- types to get boots that fit through the calves. Like the style, reminds me of my years of riding. Leather is a beautiful brown but unfortunately the fit isn't beautiful for me.

The boots are so nice that I ordered a second pair in black in the same size but unfortunately, this pair is smaller, tighter and cuts into my right ankle when walking.

I wanted these to work so badly. I've had my eye on these boots for years and when I saw the price and the dark brown color I wanted I pulled the trigger. I've been struggling to find the right boots for me. I'm 5'2 and petite so to find a shaft that is not too tall as well as finding one that fits my normal sized calves snugly has not been easy. I ordered 7.5 M and they are gorgeous. I was so excited until I put them on. As I was looking at them on in the mirror the right boot bunched up oddly at my ankle. It didn't do it as badly on the left boot, but it just didn't seem right. I have a friend with the same boots that she's had for a few years that I just saw and hers to not fit like that at all around the ankle. The shaft is also too big for my legs even with it being quite difficult to zip (I know that part will loosen with use though making them even larger on my calf). The leather is very stiff and I think will soften up, but these just weren't for me. I'm so sad they are going back. Fryes for under 200 is a steal!!

These boots are, indeed, beautiful. The simple design makes them seem dressy, but the zipper on the back gives them a little edge, too. Some advice on sizing: I first ordered a size 9, which felt super tight, so I exchanged for a size 9.5. I wish I would have kept the size 9. After a few days of wearing them, they have stretched just a bit and while they're not too loose and they fit fine (especially with thicker, winter socks), I think the size 9 would have stretched just enough and I would be slightly happier.

At first look I loved the dark brown color then when I put them on I found them to be true to size in the foot. I think I have average not thin calves and these boots do fit snug but that was what I was looking for. I was able to zip them over my thinner jeans and they will be great with a skirt or leggings

The quality of these boots is amazing. They are very beautiful, the button and zip detail are very nice. The leather is absolutely stunning. I did return these because they were not the style I was looking for. I want a more form fitting shaft and this leather is stiff and does not move with my leg when I walk. It felt like I had a shoe with a cone on top. Evidently, I have skinnier calves so even with jeans tucked in there was a space around the top of my calf. I want a pair of knee high boots to wear with skirts and short dresses and this is not the best style for that. I have seen some great photos with these boots in jeans and pants and they look great. They probably would have worked out adjusting to my calves after some time, but I did not want to pay for a pair of boots that did not fit my need. The cognac color is beautiful. I really wish they had been more form fitting. Perhaps the zipper up the back makes them more stiff as well. But if you are looking for a pair of boots for jeans and pants, and have a normal size calf, then these are probably the best investment. Esp with the sale prices.

Great boot but the calf is a little narrow and I can’t get the zipper all the way up

It’s nice, but a bit too clunky for me. Additionally, the calf was still not narrow enough for me (though I have extremely narrow calves!). Had the foot portion been less clunky, I would have kept them and had my cobbler in Williamsburg take in the width of the shaft... but they’re going back. :(

I had to send these boots back because I was paranoid about them being too slippery and not sure how often I'd wear them, but I must say I've regretted it since. I didn't really have any trouble getting them on once I got the lower snap unsnapped, but they were snug on my ~14" calves so I don't think they's work with anything but skirts and dresses. The snaps were a bit tough, not sure if that would loosen up or not. My biggest concern was the super-smooth sole. I slipped on carpet, tire and wood just walking around my house for a few minutes. I didn't want to chance wearing them outside and not having them rough up, so I sent them back. Gorgeous boot, though!

Beautiful leather and workmanship. Frye does not disappoint it that regard. However, the back zipper is a bit problematic, especially attempting to fit a skinny jean inside, and the back of the boot hits the back of my knee when I sit down. So sad to return these!

The top was just too big for my calves.

Love the look, but not wide enough -- I normally fit in boots that are not extended, but could not even get the zipper up half my calves! They are very cute though and clearly well made.

I really wanted to like these but the toe is very narrow and it made my feet hurt after a while. There's no support at all. I thought it would soften over time but they were stiff.
