This is a great outdoor runner. It has runner's stance, its rugged, and has no problem providing enough traction for any surface. Cushion is very plush yet stable enough to provide stability. However, if you are not a fan of thick and high midsole, you want to try it out first. I didn't have any problem even though this was my first chunky midsole shoes. I love the thin smooth laces. Its very comfortable and mixes well with the entire upper material. One slight gripe on this shoe is heel lockdown. I start off not very confident about the heel when I start off running. Later during running session, I forget about it because it is stable enough, but not the most confidence inspiring heel lockdown for sure. So far after a few months of use, I love this SG2. Its yellow colorway is on fire. Materials are nice and sturdy. Traction is on point. Cushion is very plush and unique.

3 time Hoka owner.
I love these shoes. Toe box was a little tight at first, but after wearing them everywhere for a few days everything loosened up. They've been great on the trails. My only complaint is water drainage, they tend to lack in this area.

First off my feet run narrow and I over pronate. I used the challengers in the past but would feel the lack of support for my overpronation on long runs. The SPEEDGOAT 2 I found to fit true to size, and has room in the toe box. It also has just enough motion control to keep my feet feeling great during longer runs. First day out of box I ran a 20 mile mixed terrain trail run with zero issues. Recently finished a two day trail race on the North country trail and felt the mix of responsiveness and stability were perfect for me.

Had a difficult time getting the size correct. The Hoka CS team jumped all over it and got me fixed up before my race day. It seemed to take me a little extra time to adjust to the fit but overall the Speedgoat 2 is light and durable.

Great shoe - Far better traction then ATR3. Only not is the toe box could be a bit wider and the tongue needs to be lengthened to keep out debris.

Right out if the box I ran a 12 mile trail run on technical trails. The traction was great, even when descending steep and loose terrain. The stability is better than I expected and the typical Hoka cushion felt great. The lugs on previous Hoka trail shoes, that I've owned, have not been durable. I am hoping these will be better. 100 miles deep, so far, and they are holding up great.

Put 400 miles on my Speedgoat 1's. But could not run more than 25 miles in them without getting blisters on the outside of my baby toes - the Speedgoat 1's were too narrow.
The Speedgoat 2 has fixed that. I ran 44 miles in them the weekend before last (Never Summer 100k), then swapped out. Then this past weekend I ran 100 miles in my Speedgoat 2's (High Lonesome 100) - no sign of blisters! Changed out socks twice, but kept the Speedgoat 2's.
Conditions: Damp, muddy, rocky, steep, even a couple of miles of asphalt. The Speedgoat 2's handled it all.
I now have about 250 miles on them. Soles are fine (the Vibram Megagrip rubber is very durable), the uppers are wearing a little on both sides where the forefoot bends. Not quite holed through yet - I'll be applying some Shoegoo.
The traction is OK in dirt and mud. And excellent on rock, both wet and dry.
These are my go-to ultra shoes.

Hi hoka costumer service
Finally until today, july 29, I could wear my shoes and unfortunately the size shoes fit tight. The size is right according to my order placed but smaller to my feet. Nevertheless, I can feel the nice cushioning and I love its design.
I fit my shoes today by first time because I had to travel to Colombia before the order were shipped to new jersey, and until, today my shoes arrived to Colombia.
I would like to know if, please, you could help me to change my shoes. I've added a picture.

Among the best shoes I've tried yet. Hoka has fixed a few of the issues I had with the Speedgoat 1 and I think these shoes will hold up better. Held up to a 22 miler for a break in run with no blisters, no hot spots and no falls. All good things!

I have worn the Mafate for several years before transitioning to the Speedgoat 2. While I would prefer an ever-so-slightly wider toe box than what is offered by the SG 2, the overall lightweight shoe with its bombproof sole does not disappoint. I have run approx. 50 miles over the past 2 weeks [all rugged trail] and the shoes are holding up very well. I put over 800 miles on each of the last 2 pairs of Mafates and I think the Speedgoat 2 will prove to be as durable.

So far I have only put about 45 miles on them, but these are just the shoe that I have been looking for. This is my first pair of Hokas and I am definitely impressed. I had to size up by a half size, but they fit great. No hot spots or blisters yet. The bounce back from the foam is awesome. It will be interesting to see how that aspect of the shoe holds up over time, but right now, everything is awesome!

In the last three weeks I have ordered the Challenger 3, Speedgoat 2, & Clifton 4, for my wife and I. I don't know which shoe this review is going to apply to. My wife and I (She,an Elite Ultra and I, a seasoned athlete, professional coach, race director, & official) have been running in Hoka since 2014. Together we've clocked thousands of miles in these shoes & swear by the brand. The quality, durability, & customer service is unmatched & we've run in KSwiss, Newton, Brooks, Asics, Saucony, trying to find the right shoe for us. I gave 4 out of 5 stars as a general rule that there is always room to improve and because, until a shoe is made specifically for me, no shoe will ever be perfect....
ATR Challenger: Good fit, true to size, same as the Clifton or Clayton, unless you use Ininji toe socks, in which case, you'll likely need to go up a half size. They're light and fast, fairly responsive, & comfortable over the long haul. This past weekend I raced the Dances with Dirt 50 in them and was happy with how they handled just about everything EXCEPT the mud! Get in the mud and it's game over, these things are slick. Decent on descents, awesome climbing, smooth on flats. My wife swears by these shoes as well. They're crazy comfortable for her, she loves them. She also just raced the Two Hearted Trail run up in Michigan & was on pace to crush the course record by about 15+ minutes...barring a side story, things got weird. To that end, they handle water efficiently, draining surprisingly well, drying quickly, which, as you know, especially in ultra, dry feet are king!
Speedgoat: I wanted to love these shoes as we are racing very technical courses but they're just too narrow, as in my feet bulge out the side. They have got to make a wider version...hybrid with the Challenger so that we can get the best of both worlds! PLEASE!
Clifton: Love them, always have, always will! The best and if you like the Challenger, this is the street version.

I so much wanted the original to be my shoe. I loved the vibram grip. I hated that I couldn't run more than 6 miles without a problem, mainly blisters. The arch was so high, narrow, making it so uncomfortable and leading to blisters. The Speedgoat 2 is so much more comfortable and I think will be more accommodating to more runners. It is on a wider platform that eliminated all the problems I had with the original. I've run only two 9 mile runs but already have a great feeling about these shoes. I think these will be my shoes for my 50 miler next year. My love/hate with Hoka has been more on the hate the past couple of years, but is leaning more to the love with the Speedgoat 2's. My toes have room to spread their wings.

Up and down steep trails in the mountains, they grip pretty well. They run a little narrow, so my foot has a bit of slide on steep downhills into the toe. Take a little getting used to because they have so much give, it works muscles in the foot pretty well. That's different, but not a bad thing.
They are taller than other shoes, so on a tree root are projecting rock, your ankle can get stressed more than with a lower to the ground shoe, but that just takes a little getting used to. Switching between shorter shoes and these can result in more tripping than usual. If you're going to run a trail race, wear them around for a week, everywhere, to make sure your muscle memory gets it.
Overall, a great shoe. You'll be happy with them, but there's a little adjustment at first.

Sizing: Runs small - size up 1/2 from your normal running shoe size. I found that my toes would hit the end of the shoe on descents. Unfortunately this resulted in a bruised toe on a recent 50k.
Fit: Snug around the forefoot. Even though Hoka widened here compared to the original version, I don't think they did it enough. I was hoping for a fit similar to the Bondi 4 wides. The toe box seems to taper too sharply.
Cushioning: Reminiscent of the Clifton 2 or Challenger ATR 1. Not too cushy, but certainly absorbs the impact. It seemed to have softened nicely by 100 miles. These are no Bondi 4s, but certainly absorb the impact.
Ride: Very responsive ride with a nice mix of cushion and rebound. They are very nimble on the trails. I even occasionally wear them on the road with great results. A versatile shoe that can handle mixed surfaces. They provide you with very good feedback on the trails. You can feel the terrain, yet it doesn't beat you up.
Appearance: Looks do count and the Speedboat 2 is an improvement over the original. I choose the Imperial Blue and Jasmine Green version. It looks more like a road shoe rather than one for the trails...and thats a good thing. Very stylish and can easily worn as a casual shoe once you've piled on the miles and cleaned them.
Traction: Excellent traction. I ran with these in very muddy trail conditions and the worked like a charm. The Vibram sole sticks to the surface regardless of the conditions - even on normally slippery rocks. The tread does very well in mud, except on steep accents; but, what shoes do? I can only think of one (another brand that has zero drop - I'll leave it at that).
Durability: At 100 miles two abrasions formed on the upper. I would imagine that these will eventually tear completely open. Everything around the sole/upper interface seems solid, so I don't foresee any blowouts happening. The tread wear still looks nearly new after 100 miles.

I have gone through 6 pairs of SG1s, all in a 12.5. I ordered the SG2s assuming they would fit the same, and they were VERY tight. Tried 13s, and they fit like a glove. The upper is much improved, and the whole shoe feels more sleek and refined. These shoes are amazing (I've completed 100Ks in the SG1 with no issues), but take this and other comments about the size issues seriously! Size up!

This shoe is a bit heavy but the grip and comfort are outstanding.
I'm running the UTMB this year and this very probably will be my shoe for that.

V1 was my first real trail shoe and I loved them, minus the narrow toe box. V2 is a bit wider than V1, but slightly narrower than the Clifton 3's I have(which are awesome). The fit is true to size and have the same size as Clifton 3's. The cushion remains great, possibly even more so than V1. The new tongue is a mesh material like the upper, and tends to slide to the side on runs, but not enough to bother me, nor let in any debris that I've noticed. Overall, I believe V2 fits more comfortably than V1 and has a little more flexibility in the upper material. They feel more like a "road shoe" than the ridgidness I feel V1 had. I havent logged a ton of miles in them yet, but were comfortable out of the box for 4 miles and didn't disappoint on a 10 miler either. Looking forward to breaking them in/forming to my feet as I log more miles.

I really want to make Hoka ONE ONE work. My first pair were the Challenger ATR 2. I loved these shoes - they worked. Then I purchased Challenger ATR 3 - and they did not work. I had hotspots, blisters, foot pain. I then went with Speedgoat 2. Great on a few short runs - 5 and 9Mi. Then at the marathon distance they just crunched my feet - blisters, pain and lost a big toenail. I have never had issues like this - in any brand of shoe. I think they are just to narrow or the last doesn't work for me, or perhaps both - and/or something else. Anyway, I sent them back and will attempt to size up 1/2 and see if that works. I am not berating the shoes, it may just be that Hoka just doesn't work for me. I want to make them work. They are so light weight and protect my feet so well. We will see.

The last narrows sharply at the medial leading edge of the toebox. This causes the big toe to rub constantly with increasing irritation against the upper, should you have a foot that likes to splay even slightly. Both the ATR3 & SG2 have this issue, alone among a couple dozen modern trailshoes I wear regularly. Fix this, Hoka! Straighten the medial edge of the toebox: It doesn't need much, but it's a big deal. Otherwise, I like this shoe. Superb grip, a nice springy feel on descents. But the toebox must be reshaped, no amount of lace-loosening or insole-removal addresses the medial bigtoe rubbing.

I've been excited for this shoe since the early previews. Excited to see they widened the forefoot and toe box. Excited to find a shoe that could be even better than the Challenger ATR 3. The down and dirty is that these are superb in every way EXCEPT for the narrow toe box and low toe bumper. If they had the same toe box as the Challenger then I could say these are easily the best trail running shoes I've ever tried. After two 7 mile runs the toe box just kills my big toes despite sizing up half a size. If toe box is not an issue for you, these will rock your world. Sadly, I am sending them back and I'll stick to the Challengers for now. Almost the perfect shoe. Almost!

This is more of a review for pronators. For neutral runners, i can only assume this is the holy grail - light, stable and appears to have good longevity. I have a feeling Hoka will do really well with this shoe and you'll see it races everywhere. The overall ride is much more refined ride than V1. The first speedgoat felt like a frankenshoe - a prototype that fit some really well and others not so much. The v2 last is a bit flatter with less extreme curves (for example, less pronounced arch support than v1). It feels a lot more like the Challenger ATR3 than the first speedgoat. To me, it feels like you're running "on" the shoe and midsole vs running "in" the shoe like v1. The active foot frame doesn't seem as pronounced here. Also, the forefoot upper is low, so while the shoe is wider, it will likely feel the same as v1 or more cramped. I run a 9.5 and this shoe is no exception. I think those who had to size up last time to save their pinky toes will be able to run their normal size, but beware that the upper is lower volume, so it'll feel more restrictive.
I pronate like the dickens. Most moderate to severe pronation models (Arahi, Adrenaline, etc) don't do anything for my late stage pronation. Speedgoat v1 was a godsend - it felt like a varus wedge was built in and provided great medial control. My pronation was very contained at the expense of some hot spots and a few lateral outward stumbles. I waited for v2 forever to solve some of the upper issues and hot spots, but they don't work for me as well as v1.There are a great ride, but don't have the medial control i need. For many with mild to moderate pronation, these will be simply awesome. Don't confuse this with stability (which this shoe definitely has). This will work better for the masses but not for me. They're good enough to keep and use them on flat trails and work on my form but will stick to V1 and Leukotape for the hills!
