This boot is very comfortable. It is my preferred hiking boot. The only problem that I have is it is too low on the ankle. Walking through any brush or stickers will result in stickers going down the top of the boot or even sticking into the soft mesh on the sides and top. I have also tore up the rubber toe protector pretty quickly. It is not the most durable boot. Only use this boot on dirt or smooth rocky trails.

Out of the box these shoes felt very comfortable and heavy. They have some good toughness to them. My first hike I made it a half a block and then I almost had to turn around because my feet were hurting so bad. I pressed on and at 7 miles I had finally broken in these boots.
Why they hurt.
1.) I have a flat foot these have a high arch. It took some time to get the arch pressed down.
2.) I have a wide foot and it took some time to shape these boots out.
After 7 miles these were great. Still pretty heavy but comfortable, and they breath decently. Great support with the mid boot. Laces are not too long so you don't have to tuck them in. I'm excited to see how long these boots will last.

As always, Merrill outdoes itself with craftsmanship for the price. My son has flat feet and wears orthotics. Although his orthotics won't fit in the boots properly, he has total comfort and support. My only other suggestion is that they would be waterproof.

THE SOLE WAS COMFORTABLE. THE FIT AT 8.5W WAS PERFECT. GOOD LOOKING BOOT. WILL TRY TO GET A STURDIER BOOT SOON.

My husband loved these boots, but the left foot rubbed his foot and was uncomfortable.
So these were returned and another pair were ordered in a wide with.
Hoping these are better fit.

As most others have already stated, these boots are fantastic. Here's my 2 cents: I'm very glad I bought the wide width, it made a big difference for me (5' 9", 345lbs) compared to the standard width. If you THINK you need wide width and you've been on the fence, I say give them a try.

Had to try this boot in several sizes, but finally decided on an 11wide. Was pretty true to size. Comfortable and supportive boot. Not too clunky.
I'd also recommend:

Over all seems like a good boot. Very comfortable. Little break in. I need some time to see how it holds up.

I really like the boots, they're decently comfortable and give me a really stable footing with every step. I really like the quality as well. One thing I don't understand though is that one shoe feels different than the other. I returned the first pair I bought because I thought maybe they were defective, but the second pair felt the same as well so I kept them thinking they would even out after they broke in, but now six montha later one shoe still feels different than the other. It's not a deal breaker, but it is kind of annoying sometimes.

Been bouncing around between Merrell, Oboz and Keen boots. I'm a hiking guide in Moab Utah and go through tread in about 6 months. Bought the Moab 2 mid boot ventilator about 3 months ago and really like the it. Great fit right out of the box and true to size. Didn't require any break in time, did a 13 mile hike second time out with them. Gets great traction on dirt, sand and slickrock. 2 things I don't care for....ventilator boot is still very warm, enough that my socks are wet in areas while hiking in dry desert conditions. Next is when hiking over rocky areas, you can feel them pushing through the tread. Other then that, really like them. The tread holds up on slickrock about the same as other Merrell shoes. Looks like I will get 6 months before ball of sole is worn flat.

I've typically worn traditional work boots but wanted something less bulky and a bit more refined for everyday wear. At first I thought were a little big but once I walked in them with normal socks, not lightweight gym Sox they were perfect. My reason for not giving 5 star rating is really more 4.5. First I wish had a little more insulation living in NorthEast and second I would prefer the top quick lace also had holes to lace thru Quick lace like my other boots. When I'm in and out of job sites/houses it's not uncommon to have my boots laced loose to slip on and off. I love a casual hike style boot that's not heavy and looks good for casual wear. If it's cold, I'll need heavier socks, but upside is won't sweat in warmer weather. That said not a winter work boot but great mid-weight! These are my first pair of Merrell and I'm very pleased and happy with safety toe for a hike style boot.

I own multiple pairs of Merrill's and their the only ones that fit the best. they also last me the longest and don't fall apart.
zappos has a good selection and fair price with speedy ship as well.

The sole of this shoe is hard, but surprisingly it gives well for walking right from the start (no breaking in needed). I thought the stiff insole would put additional pressure on my metatarsal bone that gives me issue, but I can wear these shoes nearly all day without feeling pain. I'm quite satisfied.

I have worn these Merrell boots for the last 8 years. These are the only shoes I wear. I was disappointed that they changed the color to grey instead of the traditional brown though. I will wear them for the comfort but I wish they were brown.

I've had the shoes for a few weeks, and I love them so far. I have a wide foot (normally wear a 2E), and the wide version of these fit perfectly. The sole is firm and there's plenty of ankle support. If you're looking for a trail runner, I'd look for a shoe with a little more flexibility.

I bought a pair of the Moab 2 Mid Ventilator boots based on recommendations from several backpacking / hiking websites.
My first pair, purchased on-line through REI didn't hold up very well.
I wore them on a 35 mile loop backpacking trip in the Mineral King area of Sequoia National Park. During and after the trip I noticed large chunks of the Vibram soles had torn off. I attributed this to the rough granite rocks that made up much of the trail surface. I tried to find replacements following my initial adventure but nothing was as comfortable and supportive of my feet. I tried Soloman XA Pro 3D Trail Runners, Altra Lone Peak Trail Runners and Oboz Sawtooth ventilated hiking shoes. While they all had some things they did well, none of them were very comfortable on long hikes so when I prepared for my first trip in the Sierras this year I opted for my prematurely worn Merrells simply because I trusted them to protect my feet and didn't want to chance injury with the other shoes. They worked great for my 60 mile section hike on the John Muir Trail but the Vibram Soles completely fell apart and by the end of the trip my feet got wet through the soles while walking in damp grass. So when it came time to begin my hike of the High Sierra Trail, I was faced with a dilemma but still opted with the Merrell Moab. I bought a brand new pair of Moabs on sale through Amazon this time and bought them with the presumption that they would be worn out by the end of my 80 mile hike but was willing to view the purchase as the cost of admission, so to speak. I'm happy to report that the new pair of Moab 2 Mid Ventilator boots survived this trip without a single piece coming off the soles. This leads me to beleive that the original pair that I bought through REI 18 months ago must have had a bad batch of rubber comprising the soles of those boots.
I'm happy to discover that the Merrell boots are living up to the reputation that I had read about and I now view the Moab 2 Mid Ventilator boots as durable as well as comfortable.

These were my first set of Merrells. I've had these now three to four months. These fit perfect with one exception. The innersole cushion is not very good. I had to purchase a set of different innersole cushions to make them comfortable. Otherwise I would give them a 5 star review
