I got the Gamma Mx Hoody last September for all around use, and I so far have been absolutely amazed with how versatile it is. I got the Gamma, and a Beta AR at the same time and so far I have had to hardly use the Beta to date. For Walking around Victoria I have only needed the Gamma. I was truly impressed with how well the DWR coating keeps the water out of the Gamma for a certain amount of time. If you are looking for more waterproofing then you need to buy a waterproof jacket. For something that blocks wind, and allows you to get caught in the rain for a brief period of time, this is absolutely perfect.
Similarly I was amazed with the breathability of this jacket, and have worn it almost every day since first buying it.
Note: For all of those comments saying that the Gamma is not windproof, if you have the zippers on the pockets open, it is not going to be windproof. It will let wind through the open zipper and onto your body. But if the zippers are closed, then the wind blocking is amazing.

Love it, probably my favorite outdoor jacket. It`s light, has enough wind protection so you woun`t chill out and it`s highly breathable. But what i like most is the softness and stretch of the material. It doesn`t restrict you at all, whatever you do. I couldn`t evaluate the durability since i don`t climb but i`d say it`s durable enough for a trekker, ski tourer or something similar.
As insultation, i use the Covert Hoody or a 260 Icebreaker and sooner or later the Atom LT, depending on the temps.
My comparison is:
I`ve never had something like this before.
Maybe some cons:
It`s not a rain jacket, the DWR coating is decent but after an hour in a downpour, the water found it`s way inside. It`s water resistant but not waterproof...I need to carry Alpha aswell ( i`d be interessted to see a comparison between Fortius 2.0 and Polartec Neoshell)
The cuffs are a bit too tight, i have to remove the watch and the GPS device to take of the jacket.
Enjoy

Been wanting one of these for a long time; finally broke down and bought one (couldn't resist the black + red on the 2011 model). This softshell rocks! I've had a Sigma AR for about 7-8 years and very frequently find that it doesn't breathe well enough for urban wear (although it's great for blocking wind when it's really sharp). The Gamma MX, however, fits great and breathes well; it's perfect for wearing around town but also comfortable enough to keep on at home if I'm a bit chilly. Also love that it's stretchy and looks killer.
A couple notes:
1) I'm 6' 0" 190 lbs and wear a large in Arc'teryx Athletic Fit jackets. The Gamma MX is no exception: the large fits perfectly and leaves enough room for a baselayer no problem.
2) The Fortius inner liner is much more comfortable and softer to the touch than some of Arc'teryx's older softshells.
3) As I mentioned, I've used this a lot for urban wear so far, but it's definitely ideal for skiing, hiking, and other light athletic/aerobic activities.
4) Shreds water and wind fairly well but is *not* windproof. Again, this is one of the reasons I like it so much since I don't feel like I'm roasting indoors

Loving my Gamma MX Hoody!! Matched with the appropriate base layer this softshell works well in many conditions including high winds. If there is a crazy windstorm or wet weather I rock out to my Alpha LT over top and the combo is unreal. There are no restrictions at all, it feels like the 2 are made for one and other. The fit and mobility the Gamma offers can only be found from Arcteryx.
Thanks again!!!!

I have been searching for a solid mid-weight that could also double as a shell for the harsh winter elements endured in the upper Midwest here in the US.
After attempting to buy 3 different models from Arc'Teryx (all 3 were sold out in my size and color - Small/Black is what I typically go for), I finally found the Gamma Hoody to suit my needs on paper.
This Jacket pleasantly surprised me in all areas that I was potentially concerned with: Warmth, durability, comfort, fit, and functionality.
I wanted a solid Mid Layer that could double as a Shell while holding attributes that protect against Wind, Rain and most importantly, Snow.
Since receiving my Jacket this week and giving it a test run in all of these areas, I've been thoroughly impressed.
Warmth: As a mid-weight softshell Jacket, this seems to be more designed as a Shell since it has only a very thin fleece lined backing, but the outer material holds the functionality of the best Shells on the market. Add a fleece underneath this Jacket for warmth layering and this is a dream shell for harsh winter conditions.
Durability: Reinforced on high wear areas. Super smooth and stretchy outer surface of the Aeris material ensures minimal snagging that can kill other soft woven fabric exteriors. Appears to fully resist pilling.
Comfort: 4-way stretch Aeris 2 material for maximum flexibility and maneuverability (some jackets can be highly claustrophobic, especially when layering - not this one in the least bit, it's light and nimble). Fleece backing is ultra plush and soft, especially around the chin area. Jacket is so light, its almost impossible to think this is the "bulletproof" layer that will save you in all of the harshest weather conditions, when properly layered of course for extreme cold.
Fit: I'm 5'9" and weigh 158lbs, and without a doubt I usually wear a Small in Arc'teryx Shells (Alpha FL), and typically float in a Medium which would look 3 sizes too big on me. This Jacket however fits very slim and athletic, is a little short in the front due to the lower cut on the back. Surpisingly, I ordered a Size Medium in the Color Black, and I'm happy to say it fits me perfectly while allowing room underneath for layering. Whatever your typical Size in Arc'Teryx, I would recommend ordering a size lower in this particular softshell.
Functionality: Incredible. Highly meaneauverable when worn, no constriction whatsoever, absolutely flawless in the comfort area. Hood isn't too volumous like some helmet compatible ones, and this one has all the correct adjustment cords to customize the fit around a stocking cap, under hood, goggles, etc., and still allow your face to be completely covered from the elements while allowing plenty of movement left to right. In other words, once fitted down to your liking, the hood moves with you instead of you moving inside of it.
Functionality - Wind: As this is a 98% windproof material, it is perfectly advertised as such. In the windy cold winters in the midwest, wind protection is key to staying warm. This material blocks the fridged air from getting through to your base layer, while allowing just enough air in to provide breathability and a small amount of ventilation.
Functionality - Rain/Snow: The coolest feature of this jacket is the "faucet test" to show how incredible this material is... I held the sleeve under the faucet at full force and placed a sleeve under it - the water never once started to soak into the material, it literally just beaded right off and once the sleeve was pulled out from the running water, the material was 100% dry without any dampness whatsoever in the fabric. This thing (at this point) is 110% waterproof.
Hope this helps. I absolutely love this jacket and would recommend to anyone looking for super comfy, super sytish, and highly functional All-Weather protection for Fall, Winter, and Spring Conditions.

Another recently received jacket for 2012. Fantastic finish; will be using this one on the slopes, in town; basically anywhere that takes my fancy. Fits as I expected, good wind protection and packed full of features. Another excellent product. Just wondering if anything is made in Canada anymore?

I absolutely love this jacket. Where I live it is the perfect jacket for my local climate. It keeps me warm and dry with ease. The only thing that I would change about it is have the front of the jacket cut a little bit longer.
I use this jacket to go fishing, hiking, snowboarding, you name it. I am normally a Large when it comes to Arc'Teryx but the Gamma MX hoody I found to fit a bit small (due to it being cut short in the front) so I got an XL.
Hope this helps.
Ps: The blue jacket is just the best colour blue you will ever see!

The jacket is extremely high quality and feels premium from the off as well as being a very capable mountain jacket. Price a bit high for what it is hence the drop in point but it's a great piece.

This is my 4th Gamma MX. It's pretty heavy duty with four ventilation pockets and light fleece bonded to the inside as a slight insulation. The dwr from factory is usually pretty good for light rain.
My only issue with it is the cuff design. I miss the old cuffs which are more like an atom or proton cuff. I honestly can't understand why these are designed this way. If it had the old cuffs I would give it 5 stars!
I use this for skiing as it fits over my ski helmet well and if I size up I can fit extra Insulation underneath. Of course if it's really windy and cold I'd recommend a hard shell.

I got this thinking it would layer well but really didn't work out well for that. It does hold up to some light rain and wind well and on cooler days it helps keep the cold bite out.
I love the jacket just ended up changing the use case for it. Only thing I could imagine being slightly better is perhaps a little more insulation to hold up to cold.

This is my second Gama mx jacket that I buy and I really like it. They did a couple changes over the years. One that I like are the sleeves they are more loose. They one that I didn't like was the end zipper, too small when you have gloves.

A great shopping experience. It is very practical for daily commuting in the city. The material is also very comfortable. The only regret is that although it is very good, it is not worth the price. I hope it can return to the original intention to bring more good products instead of being commercialized.

I'll start by saying this is one of my most used pieces. When you know the weather is mostly fine but want a soft shell to block some cold or keep thorns and branches from snagging your insulated layer this one is a winner. My only complaint is that the most recent version wrist cuff lost the elastic gusset type cuff in favor of an open cuff that's strangely grabs my hand/arm hair. Not sure what the intent is with this but it really bums me out. I traded back for the previous model shortly after getting this one.

Bought this jacket at the store in San Fran. Took me like an hour to decide if I wanted it cause I couldn't get over the fact that the sleeves are about 1/2 inch too short. Eventually they talked me into it but I'm still having doubts and may return it. Other than that the jacket looks and feels perfect.
If you are 6'4 like I am (or taller) with a large "wingspan" beware, you might have the same problem. Which is sad because I bought an XL.
Only one of their jackets had long enough sleeves but it was a paper thin raincoat.

I have had it for one year. Superb fit and articulation. Extremely durable material. Good for Wind, or days with little bit of rain. While offering better breathability than Gore-Tex.

Lots of great features, arm pocket, deep pockets, big hood, but the only negative is it's hard to take off...I have to take it off by inverting the sleeves as I can't pull it over my hands without inverting the sleeves.

I have the revised 2020 version (replacing 2006 version).
The cut is very good. Great articulation around the shoulder and arms. The new cuff design is great for ease of pulling on and off, this should be incorporated into other jackets. The new zipper with stops work, but, I've never had an issue with whatever it is trying to address. The hood design is great and you can cinch it down so that it looks like a normal hood when not wearing a helmet... older jackets had that bulbous mishroom head look.
This can be worn as a mid layer, but, the hood may get in the way and combined breathability will be an issue. But, the hood greatly increases the temperature range that you can use this.
Parts of the jacket are glued together and may not last over time... e.g. part of the cuff, the part around the waist. In my 2006 Gamma MX, the glued parts have all been worn and detatched, but the stitched areas are fine.
I have the 'Dynasty' colour and it appears more orange than red in real life. I have other Arc'teryx products in the same colour and there is a clear different, esp. in the face fabric.
Overall, this is a great jacket line and I'm sure I'll get 10+ years of use out this one as well.

This review takes into account the previous model as well as updates to this model.
When I heard the Gamma MX was getting a revision I was quite excited, but also slightly worried (if it's not broken, don't fix it). I will say that the previous version deserves a full five stars, with my only gripes being (1) front body was too shortespecially for tall guys like meand (2) it serves as an excellent soft shell, but the ability to layer underneath was limited. Otherwise, articulation was superb, utility was unmatched, and durability has proven solid.
I live in a rural area but I happened to be near an Arc'teryx store recently so I popped in to check out the new iteration. Front length is now longer, and the updated material seems to have a more durable weave (perhaps at the expense of stretch and mobility). Yet the biggest concerns were as follows:
(1) The shoulder construction was much too tight. I realise fit is different for everyone, but this has been a selling point for Arc'teryx climbing and alpine lines, and quite frankly I've never experienced this issue with any other piece save maybe the Donovan sweaterbut that's everyday wear.
(2) Larger cuffs are nice to accommodate gloves, take on and off, etc. but I would prefer some sort of velcro closure to better seal out wind.
(3) Lastly, the articulation was just not there. Raising my hands above my head lifted up the whole jacket, and I simply cannot imagine climbing, ice or alpine, with that glaring fault. The arms could stand to be slightly longer as well.
The newest version has potential to be a winner with some minor tweaks and modifications. In the end, I bought a second jacket in the older model.
