Excellent shoe for walking. Provides support and balance. If you suffer from sore feet from planter fasciitis this is a great shoe for you. It's crazy expensive but it's the only shoe that doesn't hurt my feet from a lot of walking.

This V4 version of the 990 has a slightly wider toe box and for my foot, the additional rooms works well. The grey color is subtle. When lacing the shoes I found that I needed to bring the laces to a higher hole than reflected in the picture. The shoes are made in the USA. I am willing to pay a little bit more if the money is going to support salaries of fellow Americans.

I bought these shoes after my feet developed metatarsalgia from wearing ill fitting shoes and orthotics. They are expensive, but have helped relieve my pain, so I can't put a price on that!
I need a narrow fit with a wide toe box and these fit the bill. l can get my correct fitting orthotic in them and wear them all day and my foot only hurts a little bit on the left side at this point.
I have ordered two other colors to try them out. Go for it....having no pain is worth it!

Very stable, good for foot problems including bunions. The sort of story your podiatrist would love, but not ugly either. I use for exercise

Usually wear ASICS narrow width. These New Balance sneakers in narrow width are not narrow. They fit like a medium width in ASICS and Nike sneakers.

These shoes were a little too much shoe for me. They were a bit heavy. They did not seem to have as much cushion as I would like. I have pretty severe arthritis for this type of shoe. They just weren't right for my feet. They are a very nice shoe and made in the USA. A thumbs up for that.

Purchased the 993’s eight years ago and have been wearing them since primarily during cool weather. Purchased the 993v4 thinking they were the same shoe. Some differences, toe is more round, tongue is longer, and feel more clunky. The grey is much darker than expected, different from the 993. They do, however, have the best stability and pronation characteristics of any shoe I have ever found. Excellent walking shoe and I walk about 4.5 miles each morning. The suede makes my feet hot, so a better choice for the cool weather. I highly recommend these if you have had multiple foot and ankle surgeries.

I am totally bummed. Have worn out my 990v3’s so naturally ordered 990v4. But they have changed the shape of the toe box and it is just too narrow for me...even in a D width. New Balance: You totally messed up a perfect walking shoe!!

The length of the shoe was perfect, but it felt too tight across my foot. I didn't want to take a chance that the shoes might stretch, so I returned them. The cushioning inside felt it would do an adequate job.

This is my usual NB sneaker. I do not know what they have done, but the tongue of the sneaker is so large and bulbous, that it hits the front of my ankle. They will be going back. Sad!

I have very limited choice in shoes as I wear a 5.5 double wide. This shoe fits me well. I do not feel there is much arch support. I have put my own inserts in without any problems. I like the shoe.
If there were arch support, I would have given this shoe FIVE stars all the way around.

I am searching for a replacement for my beloved Brooks Adrenaline GTS17's, since Brooks has changed the shoe in the new model, GTS 18. Sadly, these New Balance W990v4's aren't the one. After wearing them around the house for a bit, my feet began to feel fatiqued, and the stitching on the top of the shoe was bothering my right toes. I wear custom orthotics for overpronation and require stablility shoes. Thanks, Zappos, for your amazing return policy!
Instead of a gym shoe for my trip to Europe, I am going to wear Merrell's Siren Guided LTR Q2. It has a black leather upper and sturdy black, grippy sole, making it look less touristy than a gym shoe.
I'd also recommend:

I'm trying New Balance after years of wearing Brooks. The arch support is good as was Brooks, although I did buy some insoles to replace the ones that came in the NB. My issue is that once the support lessens I have hip and knee pain and NB has stronger support and I'm hoping they last longer.

The toe box was wider than I have had from NB in the past and the shoe was about 1/2 inch longer than the shoes I currently own. Too big and a bit too gold.

I have these very comfortable sneakers in a darker color & wanted a lighter color for summer. I was disappointed in the workmanship. Inside the last lace openings the cushioning was loose and a little frayed. Also, there was already a smudge on them. I decided the color was too light for dog walking. Frankly, for this price I expected better quality.

This is a very nice looking and well made shoe but it didn't work for me. I have plantar fasciitis along with toe tendonitis and this shoe just doesn't have enough cushioning. I found that the bottoms of my feet became painful after a few hours of wear around the house. Sadly, I had to return them.

1st impressions. Good looking not ugly at all. Read below about the tongue. good stability plenty of toe space, i got the wide. If i had bunions i am not sure these would be my shoe I on the other hand need snug as my heels give me trouble. The arch support is good for now i will put a sturdier arch support in later.
About those complaining about the tongue. You need to learn the proper way to lace a sneaker. My guess is you dont use the top eyelets. Those eyelets when laced poperly snug your shoe around your ankle and heel. No slipping Their is no tongue hanging out You can find a video on YT showing the proper way

I decided to try these which came up when I did a search for a neutral sneaker which is what I need for my feet. I was surprised to find I preferred the wide. At first I found them kind of stiff, but as I wore them, they kind of worked in. In general they are very supportive though I think the arch support is less than ideal and I wear them with a very thin 3/4 orthotic under the removable inner sole. I also think the description of being well cushioned is false. The sole is fairly hard and not well cushioned inside and they are less flexible than would be ideal. And they really are pretty ugly. But because I have such a hard time finding shoes that fit me, I chose to ignore the ugly factor and go with them.

This is a very sturdy shoe; that means it's also heavy, which doesn't work for me. (I have absurdly large feet for my small frame) I tried the shoes for three weeks before returning them; the deciding factor became knee pain. The shoes really address the overpronator but my bad knee does not like being corrected.

I have a wide foot and the only color available in wide/extra wide is the gray with hot neon pink. In person the pink is worse than the online photos. I don’t particularly care for pink anyway but was thinking perhaps I could live with it. When I saw the shoe in person the pink reminded me of Pepto Bismo and I knew I would never be able to get past the color and actually wear them. The fit seemed okay but I didn’t walk around or even stand up in them. I knew I wouldn’t be able to live with the color so no need to go further.

If you are just going for functionality and want lots of support, then the shoe is fine. But it was just too ugly for me and kind of clod-like. Back in my running days, I wouldn't have cared.

Ordered this shoe after being very disappointed in the 680v5 I ordered a few months ago to replace an old pair. (I ran hundreds of miles in the 680v3, which had great cushioning as well as stabilization.) The 990v4 has the fit I've come to expect from New Balance (roomy toe box and snug heel) and the stabilization seems good as well as the heel cushioning, but the forefoot cushioning was not nearly as good as I would expect for this price point. In fact it was worse than my ratty old 680v3 pair that have done several hundred miles, and I am not going to pay $175 for worse cushioning than I already have in a shoe that cost half as much and is at the end of its lifespan. Sadly, this pair is going back just like the 680v5 before them.
New Balance has LOTS of middle-aged women customers like me who NEED major forefoot cushioning to keep our feet happy, particularly after years of wearing "professional" heels. I do not understand why New Balance is ruining their lineup with these shoes where the cushioning is so lacking. I *know* it is not an unavoidable tradeoff for a good stabilizing shoe, because the 680v3 sitting in my closet is proof to the contrary. If some MBAs decided they could save a few pennies per shoe this way, it was a bad tradeoff, New Balance: you're going to lose older customers who can actually afford your higher-end shoes.

So disappointed. They fit great, very comfortable. Here is the problem.... Had to lace up both shoes only to find, the laces were too short to tie. So ridiculous. Get it together, New Balance.

I have worn 990s for many years but the v4 is much smaller than other models in the past. Large, thick tongue makes shoes much smaller than same size 990s in previous models. Laces also too short. Very disappointed since I have loved this sneaker in the past. Do not recommend.
