I use this backpack at college. I carry my laptop in the designated laptop sleeve which keeps it protected. I also fit several books in the main compartment. I pack extra clothes and gym gear in with my books and laptop so I have everything I need for the day.

This is by far the best backpack I have owned. I had The North Face Amira backpack for years previously until I was looking for something a bit bigger. I use my Surge on a daily basis and could not be happier with it. The straps are designed perfectly and allow for comfortable wear. The padding is amazing in the lower back and very breathable on the upper back. There are so many compartments and a lot of space. I specifically really like how the electronic compartments are lined with this really soft fabric. I would highly recommend!

It is great when you have a lot to carry at a time since it is very spacious. Also, it is very stylish and looks great with everything. I don't see any flaws with the backpack.

My grandson, high school junior received this as a gift...a high-achiever, tennis player and extremely detailed ...never too organized, started his first day back to classes feeling prepared as he would say.. "strutting my new SURGE"! He left more confident knowing this backpack would enable him to locate all his school items without having to fumble around during instructional class time. Could not stop thanking me enough as he explained how important this school year is and now with the "SURGE"... "comfort" and "organization" with no time wasted. More time to concentrate on school work and tennis! Thank you North Face...we have the "SURGE"!

The previous NorthFace backpack I owned was the Surge from a few years ago. I use the backpack mostly for school, but my last backpack was used for backpacking across Europe all summer as well. I like the Surge because of the size and the separate compartment for the laptop. Because of it's durability, I refuse to buy any other backpack! I was a hesitant to buy this Surge because of the modifications, but I think that they've done a great job with the upgrade. I would highly recommend this backpack.

I like this back pack; however, it does not compare to my previous North Face Surge from a few years back. This back pack is sturdy and more comfortable but it has less pockets and whenever I set it on the ground, it falls forward. I really miss the bottom pocket. I used to put my Kensington locks and all charging cords in the bottom pocket. Now its goes in the front pocket which adds to the uneven weight distribution.

Purchased for my high school age son who commutes to school. Invested in a higher end backpack for more back support. It's a bit heavier but great support.

I use this backpack for college and for my laptop. The laptop sleeve does not fit my 15inch Mac with a slim hard shell case on it. If you don't have a case on your laptop it will fit very snug! Overall the quality is great, colors are vibrant and it's great for college!

Have cycled with this backpack on, and am now a freshman in college with the Surge. No matter how much weight I put in here, the support in this backpack makes it the weight feel a lot less than that it is. In my daily routine I have my laptop, books, binders, pencils, pens, calculators, etc in here and It all fits while maintaining a slim profile due to the compression straps. You never know the feeling of a QUALITY backpack until you finally own one. I love wearing the Surge.

This backpack has 3 main compartments. The first one, which is closest to the shoulder straps, and would lay flat closest to your back is the laptop/tablet compartment. I have to say, when I first received the backpack, and tried to fit my Dell M4700 laptop which is a 17" monitor, I didn't think it would fit. I had to really stuff the laptop into the sleeve, and I thought that I might rip the sleeve if I continued to use stuff the laptop in the sleeve. Since the first use, the sleeve seems to have stretched out a bit, and now I'm able to comfortably insert my laptop into the sleeve. There's also room in this compartment for other books, or drawings, or other smaller miscellaneous items like a laptop charger. The second, or middle compartment is pretty basic. There is no sleeve, or anything special. I use the second compartment for bulky items. I have a power strip, my laptop charger, a pair of shoes, and my sunglasses case in it, with room to spare. The third compartment, and furthest compartment from the straps is where you would put pens, pencils, and any other smaller items like a USB flash drive. There is a pocket with a zipper in this compartment that you can put all of your smaller things that you'd worry about losing easily. This compartment is a bit smaller than the other compartments, but I believe that the north face hit the nail on the head with the size of the third compartment. Not too small, not too big. On the front of the backpack is a pocket at the to for putting maybe your wallet, keys, phone, phone charger, etc in. Anything bigger than a Samsung Galaxy Note 4, or an Apple iPhone 6 plus would have a hard time fitting into the top front pocket. There's two other pockets in the front that when you first look, you'd think they're the same pocket, but they're two separate pockets. They come in handy for long cords, or a flashlight, or something you need to get to pretty fast without digging into one of the compartments. Hopefully this helps!

This back has fulfilled all my wishes. It is the most Beautiful color, feels good on my body, and has room for everything I need to carry. most backpacks hurt my neck and shoulders but the design of the surge makes wearing this backpack a delight. The strap across the chest helps distribute the weight. I have a 15,6 inch screen computer and it doesn't fit in the sleeve but it does fit in the back pocket.

My daughter's love these backpacks. Bought one for my first daughter her freshman year. It has held up so well, she is a senior and still uses it with no problems. Since my other daughter is now a freshman, I didn't mind paying the price knowing it will last and stay in style.

I'm 5'11", 180lbs with somewhat of an athletic build. I use this pack for travel and every day stuff. It fits my 13" MacBook Pro and a 1" 3 ring binder no problem. The computer pouch is separate from the main pouch, so no room is lost for clothes, my camera bag (I'm a photographer & musician), toiletry bag and shoes. With those 2 compartments used up, there is still PLENTY of room for everything else, there are so many well thought out pockets. Including stuff for people with tablets. And finally, a fluffy lined pouch for my shades. Love this one, because I use them a lot and I don't like scratched lenses. Finally, it's comfortable. I like to pull my packs tight to my back, for better support and also so it won't move around much while going from place to place (especially getting on and off airplanes). And since I wear it tight, a lot of packs pinch at the back of the neck or shoulders because not enough width was given in the straps. This one feels so comfortable. I love this pack. If you are looking for a backpack which Excels at carrying electronics along with clothes or other somewhat bulky items, and bringing along anything else to make your life more comfortable....then I highly suggest investing in this bag.
