I have owned about a dozen backpacks over my 60+ years, & this one is the most comfortable. My PT says that because of the arthritis in my neck, I must use a backpack, preferably one w/ a hip strap to take weight off my shoulders & neck. Altho this pack doesn't have a hip strap, it sits comfortably on my back (I'm 5'2"), and w/ it's weight evenly distributed because it's structure is firm so it doesn't sag the way many packs do. There are many pockets for everything u could possibly need in a day, yet it doesn't feel heavy to wear. And it's very attractive so it's like wearing an accessory rather than a utilitarian pack.
My only complaint is that I got the email about a 40% discount 2 days after I ordered the pack, before I even received it. I was tempted to return it and repurchase it w/ the discount.

I take this backpack with me to work everyday. Sometimes I ride the train in to work and sometimes I drive - but this bag comes with me either way. I can bring my laptop as well as my lunch and any other gear I might need for the day (a change of clothes or an extra pair of shoes to head to the gym). The best part is the built in laptop sleeve which I know protects my laptop from getting damaged. Great product!

I am in the military and I need a plain black bag to carry stuff in every day and to make short trips with. I recently took a four-day trip to a moderate climate and I fit a pair of boots, a pair of sandals, 4 days change of clothes, toiletries. a huge textbook, and my 15" laptop and my kindle fire with room to spare. With all that capacity, one would expect the bag to be bulky and saggy but it was structurally sound and comfortable to wear. Everyone else had a rolling suitcase to lug around but my 2015 uptown was more than sufficient. I have to find out who needs backpacks for Christmas so I can spread the word about these high quality items.

This has been our staff bag for a year now. When people come to interview, I love to show that we take care of our employees by giving them the best bags made anywhere. Even more so, I love seeing them smile when our new hires get thier own Uptown. We have a stash of logo'd patches here in stock and stitch them on and we have our very own B.A. company look.
Timbuk2 really are the best. When I see someone else with a TB2 bag I always ask them how they like it and it is always some variation of love.
I have lined the bottom of the laptop compartment with an old sock to help protect the corners. My laptop is too large for the actual sleeve but does still fit inside the laptop compartment. The old sock works great, and if TB2 had padded the compartment bottom my laptop might not fit, so I prefer the personal hack.

I'm a 29 year old woman returning to college, and I commute quite a distance, so I needed a backpack that could keep all of my books, laptop and knick-knacks organized. I had been wanting the oxide and adobe color for quite some time, but it always sold out too quickly. Thankfully I managed to snag it during the 25% off sale, and I couldn't be happier! It's a little bit large for my 5'3" thin frame, but that's because I stuff it to the max. I'm able to fit a binder, 3-4 books, a sweater, and lunch bag in the main compartment, and my wallet, headphones, and fairly large makeup/medicine bag in the organized compartment. I never feel like I've run out of space, and I love how protected my laptop is. Overall, it's a beautiful and very utilitarian backpack. The best of both worlds.

Very light and good protection. Great padding and lots of pockets everywhere! The only thing is that I would have liked it to be in different colors. This is only all black. But other than that GREAT backpack overall!

I would love to have one side pocket, just on the other side of the one that has the bottle pocket.
And if the capacity could be around 40 Liters, instead of 30, it would be the perfect bag for me, since I travel a lot and want to have many things at hand.

I use this back pack from work to vacation to studying.
The many pockets are a plus and also the TSA laptop cover is so easy, I am always commuting from NorCal to SoCal and I have never been stopped by TSA. The only down side is me that I overpack my bag that it becomes so heavy but it's amazing how much weight the straps can handle. I always recommend it to my friends especially for its lifetime warranty.

I commute into Chicago every day and was looking for a comfortable option, where I could stay organized and still be considered "stylish". This is the perfect bag! I have had multiple people ask me where I got it, and they've purchased it themselves. The pockets help me stay organized, it is the perfect size- fits everything you need, but stays pretty compact, and it is gender neutral in style/color, but doesn't feel like it's a bag for dudes! Love it and would highly recommend!

Overall I really love this bag. The lap top pocket seems to offer decent protection, though I've only had it for a few weeks, I have dropped it once and there was no damage to my laptop. My only complaint is that I wish it had a bit more volume. The main middle compartment is quite rigid and doesn't allow you to really stuff anything in there. I don't know if I'd be able to use this on a weekend trip where I needed to take a flight and carry a few changes of clothes, but it works great for my main purpose which is protecting my laptop and carrying all my work gear into coffee shops as I'm always working remotely.

Long time employee of an industrial firm , and recently moved into a position that requires a lot of travel . I did my research , and this bag delivers on all it promises . Looking forward to the day my current carry on falls apart " Wont be long now " so I can replace it with the Copilot . Actually , going to be in the San Francisco area , and will make the purchase in its birthplace , seem only fitting , great products , great company , good job !

To Timbuk2 and back! This is my go-to backpack. The Uptown Laptop TSA-Friendly backpack goes with me almost everywhere. I use it for my commute to and from work, but it also serves on weekends for short hikes or walks, outings with wife and child, visits to family and friends. It goes everywhere and can pretty much carry anything I might need. My devices almost always go with me (except on hikes, walks, etc.) - laptop, tablet, phone, as well as pads of paper, pens, pencils, styli, cords, adapters... and all kinds of miscellany. Whatever I might need on any given trip.
The TSA compartment has made it so convenient for getting through security checkpoints. The TSA folks seem to know the concept, because I haven't been stopped or questioned or asked to remove my laptop entirely and put it in a separate tub because they didn't know the concept.
For the record, I used to have an Eddie Bauer Adventurer backpack, purchased in 2006 and finally worn out in 2014. It was an incredible backpack - well thought-out, designed, and manufactured. Unfortunately, EB just doesn't make the Adventurer to the same quality it used to anymore, so I looked for an alternative. The Timbuk2 Uptown was that backpack, with its quality, versatility, style, and durability - and it has served me well. Plus, Timbuk2 seems like a good, conscientious company that does good things. i would definitely buy again.

I was looking around for a largish backpack to use as my tech bag/purse for when traveling. I use a Timbuk2 Candybar backpack as my everyday "purse" and have fallen in love with the company's quality. (I usually kill the bottom of backpacks within a year - my candybar is 3 years old and still going strong!) So, of course, my first stop was the Timbuk2 store in LA, where I was able to rifle through all their available backpacks and ask a trillion questions. I finally settled on this bag, mainly because of all it's pockets and well structured straps that didn't anger my picky shoulder when heavily loaded. (FYI: tendinitis in your shoulder SUCKS!)
I took the backpack out on its first outing this last week when the kids and I took the bus up to NorCal to visit friends and then traveled back via the train. The bag held everything we needed (batteries, cords, tablets, Nintendo DS's, snacks, my wallet and personal items) in an organized manner so I didn't end up spending hours on end digging into the bottom of a cavernous one-pouch backpack for a certain item. The side pouch holds a tall 16 oz coffee thermos or a 32 oz water bottle perfectly, without fear of them falling out. The two main pockets have good-quality zippers that "hide" in that water bottle pouch, so you can secure your back easily by tucking the zippers behind your water bottle when in a busy location. Though I did have a lot of stuff in there and it ended up being quite heavy, the straps distributed the weight across my back, making it very wearable and easy to carry. Best of all, my shoulder wasn't screaming at me at the end of our travel days!
I especially LOVE the laptop pocket, which ends up being the most inner (towards your back) pouch in the bag. Though it opens flat for airport inspection, no can get into that zipper area when you're wearing the bag, so your tablet and/or laptop are safe. There are 2 pockets in there - 1 that loads from the top of the bag and one that loads from the side with a velcro "catch". I used the up-and-down one to hold my Samsung tablet and the side one to hold my 12" Chromebook. Though there are no "dedicated" spots for charger cords, you could tuck them in there if you wanted to. (I store my laptop charger cord and mouse in it's own pouch in one of the main pockets.
All in all, this is an excellent bag. It fulfilled everything I wanted for a weekender tech backpack - hold all my stuff (tech and personal) in an organized way, not fall apart, look good (a lot of the "travel" backpacks are obtrusive and in annoying colors so you "look" like a tourist) and take it easy on my shoulders. I see getting a lot of use with this for travelling and for school.
My final grade - A+

Was a little concerned about this bag at first. But it was the best one to fit my size laptop. I was very pleased once I got it. There is plenty of room for everything and plenty of practical pockets (some bags just have too many pockets). Straps fit nice with enough padding for comfort, but not too much that I can't just slip it off. I have not gotten on the plane with this yet, but I am not anticipating any issues. The one issue I see in teh future is the sleeve holding my laptop is getting a little wear already from my iPad.

I bought this backpack for my vacation 4/1/16. I have a lot of gadgets and wanted something especifically made for traveling. It worked like a charm at TSA. I'm also a bicycle commuter and this backpack is perfect to carry all my gadgets. I love the multiple and comfortable pockets. The zippers on the pockets open up to give you wide access. I also love the easy access to laptop and tablet in the back. I can't speak of how water resistant this is because I live in the Sun City so it hardly ever rains here. I was caught in a bit of rain going home one day this month but it was just a sprinkle and the backpack faired nicely. I hardly recommend this backpack to traverlers and commuters.

The bag is the perfect size to store more than you think with logically and functionally designed, sized and placed pockets without any added bulk. Design remains sleek and supportive for commuting professionals that want to look polished and modern without the pomp or stuffiness of traditional work accessories.

The number of pockets for keeping small items organized is very helpful. I carry a lot of cords, business cards, pens, and marketing materials that stay put inside their compartments.

Verified Purchase
Great bag with so much space. I bought this after trying the Northface microbyte which was just way too small. My favorite part is the TSA lie flat laptop sleeve which made going through airport security a breeze. I was also able to pack two outfits, my purse, laptop, cable, sunglasses, eyeglasses, makeup bag, quart liquid baggie, etc. There was room for more. Plus, it's really pretty. :) The cons are minimal, but worth mentioning: The back is a little stiff (because it's protecting my laptop), and one of the should straps was slightly uncomfortable. But maybe I just need to spend more time adjusting it.

I was looking for a replacement for my Timbuk2 Showdown, specifically looking for something that was bigger for the day-to-day commute and had better organization for all my electronics and office stuff. After a ton of research, I went with the Uptown based on a recommendation from the Timbuk2 rep, and I am happy I did!
This bag really shows how Timbuk2 is upping it's game. Materials and finish are outstanding in and out, with upgraded fabrics throughout the bag and reinforcement in all the right places. Top and side straps are really handy, and the laptop protection is rock solid. Even the water bottle pocket has been upgraded from older bags. Mine is the oxide/Adobe combo, and it definitely feels like a business-worthy bag as opposed to a casual backpack.
As a point of reference, I usually carry a laptop and an iPad, a packed lunch, notebooks, an iPhone, a variety of chargers, and the usual assortment of office stuff (pens, pencils, travel mug, etc.). Loaded to the gills, the bag still feels compact and is comfortable to carry.
Nice work, T2. I wok,d definitely recommend this to a friend. Hopefully my son doesn't try to steal it from me!

Back and forth between home and work, traveling for business. I tried bike commuting with it this morning, and it's not the greatest bag for the application, but I realize timbuk2 has many other bags that would work great with bike commuting. I like this bag so much, I might just have to get another!
