I have the new Microsoft Surface book and this is perfect for my 13 inch screen. I love having the tablet pocket as well (yes, still travel with both). It took a little practice to pack everything and get used to the zippers but now I think it's the best I have ever had.

This is a product that looks as good as it is. I commute daily, but also happen to travel often. There are so many pockets, and there is a very well-protected pouch for a laptop as well. If you are traveling on a plane, you can pack a few days worth of clothes (in addition to a laptop and other small items) in this bag, and save yourself from bringing another carry-on or checked bag. The TSA feature definitely works as well, as I was able to lay my backpack flat without having to take my laptop out. Overall awesome product.

I love this backpack! I've tried many and rejected many. This one is a keeper. Sometimes, I don't even know I'm wearing it--even with my laptop and other items packed inside it. If I could manage to travel for six weeks with just this backpack, I would!

This backpack is full of surprise pockets. Its hard to find something out there on the market that is compact but holds so much. Perfect for traveling and just for work in general.

This backpack is both light and looks thin when it's empty, and yet contains so much more the you think it could!!
Very functional and Very comfortable.

I use it for my personal laptop to carry it to a coffee shop for working or for personal travel. I carry a Surface Book and an iPad. The bag has enough room for all my items plus I can use it as an overnight bag for trips between Seattle and SF which I do a couple times a year.

I came here to write a glowing review but now I'm just so aghast to learn that I've missed out on a significant discount on my barely week-old backpack. I don't know what to say now. :'(
......
I had a 3-year-old Timbuk2 laptop backpack in good condition (it's just dirty) which I've used to travel all over the world for pleasure and work. However, I've been itching for a change for months as I was looking for a bag that A) looked more professional (I had selected my previous bag while in grad school) and B) had an external water bottle pocket, to remind myself to drink more water.
I picked the Turf color and it turned out to be darker than it appears in the photo, which is a good thing - it looks very professional without being completely boringly black. The material is kind of a thick scratchy denim, which isn't great when carrying it in a sleeveless top but it does feel quite rugged.
The capacity and internal organization is great. It has more compartments than my previous bag, so I'm still having trouble remembering where various items are in this bag. I was sold when I saw the other review titled "Mary Poppins of Alcohol" (the Mary Poppins part, not the alcohol part). It's mostly empty when I carry it on a daily basis but the space will come in handy when I'm traveling. The laptop compartment is also super accessible.
I've said below that I would recommend this to a friend, however it's not true. I would recommend it to a stranger, but I don't think it would be a good idea for a friend to have the same bag as it would get confusing.

I travel by air quite a bit, both for business and pleasure trips. I had specific needs for a backpack and was not finding it anywhere....until I remembered Timbuk2. I love the Uptown Laptop Backpack! It checks all of my personal requirements for a travel backpack. Going through airport security is much easier because of the laptop compartment on the backside. It has two large compartments for reading materials, toiletries, wallet, extra clothing layers, etc. and the front compartment has lots of little pockets for pens, comb, snacks, and keys. It looks stylish enough that I can carry it while wearing business attire, or casual enough when I'm dressed down. Thank you Timbuk2!

I use this bag for a work laptop bag. The laptop pouch in the back of the bag leaves all the front pockets and main compartment open for me to store all my essential work folders, books and travel needs (including a small purse - so I can avoid going over my 1 personal item requirement when flying)

I use this everyday for commuting to and from work and school. There is plenty of space for books and a packed lunch. And within the first week of having it, several people commented on how much they liked my new backpack.

I used this bag for work and when I brought it and showed people how much I could fit in it two people ended up buying the backpack! Somehow I managed to fit a pair of shoes, jeans, shirt, light rain jacket, deodarant, keys, cell phone, cell phone charger, laptop, laptop charger, two bottles of wine, and six beers in this backpack ALL AT THE SAME TIME!! And.... it didn't feel crazy heavy or look stuffed! People called me the Mary Poppins of Alcohol after that.

I was so impressed by my TimBuk2 messenger bag that I've been wanting to purchase another. After looking through their site, I set my eyes on backpacks that I could use for school (and future traveling adventures). This bag immediately caught my attention, not only for its functionality, but also for its look and durability. Scanning the reviews, they seemed honest (pros and cons alike) and I am happy to say that I've been satisfied with my purchase. My MacBook fits great, along with my tablet and a few writing pads. Although I have only used this bag for school so far, I look forward to using it on future trips. There is no doubt in my mind that it will work great.
My ONLY dissatisfaction with this bag is that it doesn't sit nicely on the ground or table without falling on its face, which isn't that big of a deal since I just need to lean the strap-side against my chair.

The only shame I encounter with this bag is the fact that I am using a 15.6" laptop, which can only fit in one of the laptop compartments and it's a little troublesome to put in and take out because of the zipper.
Apart from that, I really love this purchase!

Overall, I haven't had this backpack for too long, but its been great, I travelled with it and with all the compartments I was able to fit everything like my laptop, books, sweater, camera, snacks... etc. it's comfortable to travel and it seems to be holding up nicely. Now I use it for my studies and again it's great. If anything, perhaps the zippers at first gave me a bit of trouble, but now seem fine.

Normally I add too much into my backpack, but the pockets in the Uptown balance out my different needs + I do not over stuff!

I love this bag. The pockets are great, computer storage is well designed and its is small enough for me to feel comfortable for me to take on long business trips without a backache.
The only drawback that I see is that TSA still wants me to remove my computer.

Used this bag for travel and the pockets kept everything organized. This has now become my work bag due to being lightweight and can pretty much hold anything and still have a slim look. Would recommend this bag for any use.

I bought this hoping that it would work well for walking to class with a laptop and books as well as traveling for conferences. It's working for these purposes even better than I expected it would! I can carry so much more than I expected without noticing much in the way of strain. It's also super easy for air travel - I love the TSA compliant design. And it fits under the seat perfectly, even on small regional aircrafts. Mainly, I wanted to be able to switch to something that wouldn't kill my back/shoulders without looking like a little kid when I'm working. This definitely fits that ticket. It is grown-up enough to pass in low-key professional environments.
The only cons really, are related to my stature. As a short woman, the bag bounces on my butt unless I shorten the shoulder straps to their shortest setting. If I do that, though, then the adjuster straps dangle ridiculously low, and the width of the straps means that they chafe under my arms. I need the size, in order to fit my laptop, but some options in the width and length of shoulder straps for us little people would be really nice.
