I love this shoe design. It took me while to get use to the fit, but considering beauty of this shoe, it is well worth it. I have gotten numerous compliments.

I loved the shoe, but returned it for a size larger in width. Too tight over my arch, and across the width of toe box.

Beautiful dress oxfords. These plain toes are one of my favorites along with my Park Avenues and Kenilworths. Loving the Oxblood color which has supplanted Merlot as my favorite color.

An excellent dress shoe. The craftsmanship is without comparison. My order was promptly processed too.

This was one of the first pair of AEs I owned, and is still hands down the best pair I have (yet). At first I was worried size 11 D's were too narrow when my ankles were getting sore within 30 minutes of walking, but by the end of the day they already fit like a glove. Applying leather conditioner only made them more supple and flexible to fitting my feet.
And did I mention the comfort! Simply outstanding. Even though they're dress shoes, I feel like I could walk 10 miles in them!
Best of all, the difference between these and more typical square-toed shoes at work is just amazing! No one outright asks me about them, but it's evident when they take a glance at my feet before heading onto their business.

Perfect business suit shoe. A fine look and a great fit. I am extremely pleased with this style along with a really good web shopping experience.

I spent a lot of my work time in a desk, but when I do have to move around with theses shoes it makes it feel like I am not even wearing a pair of shoes at all. I have had them for about half a year and they get more comfortable every time I wear them.

I was able to get a store fitting in NYC while on a trip and was glad I did. My size is 11.5-D but sometimes a C-width will fit better, as was the case with my Fairhavens. However, since Carlyle is not available in a C, I ended up in an 11-D, which makes me think this shoe may run a little long. Bottom line: recommend a store fitting.
My intention is to have a shoe that will work with both a suit and a tux so I don't have to pack an extra pair of shoes in addition to the tux. These shoes will work for the latter if you put the effort into a high-luster shine (see Shoe Snob on YouTube). I found that they are easily broken in and very comfortable.
My other comment is the lace length. I've written up a question about 33" laces being too long, especially when bar-laced as pictured. I believe that even 27" would be fine, but the laces should definitely be flat as supplied.

I would have liked them to be wider. The 3e should be a little bit wider.

Width too small for my feet -- otherwise these shoes are fantastic. Have been wearing Allen-Edmonds forever, but my feet have widened, sadly, and they don't make a wide enough shoe.

This is one of AE's best looking shoes: simple, sleek and elegant, these are an American answer to some of the pointy silliness coming from Europe nowadays. I generally pair them with formal attire (black tie) though they look equally good with a daytime suit (I imagine especially so in the other colors they are now available in).
Fit wise, they are great for those of us with long, narrow feet, so if you have wide feet, I'd expect you need to go with a wider size than you'd normally wear. For example, I normally wear a B, but in these I went with a D.

I have gotten more compliments about these shoes at work than any other shoe I have ever worn. Perhaps it's the walnut burnished calf coloring in a office full of black shoes. The Carlyle does fit a little bit more snug than my other AE's but they are still comfortable after a long day.

I initially purchased the Hanover as I needed a plain toe shoe for formal occasions. The fit and look of the Hanover was fine just would have preferred a five eyelet as opposed to the three eyelet construction. I was not necessarily partial to the patent leather Mayfair. The Kenilworth was considered but for my taste seemed a bit to casual for formal wear although an option. The Carlyle was the look I sought thus made an exchange of the Hanover. I picked up the shoes yesterday in store tried, them on and was pleased with the fit and look. I would recommend this shoe as an alternative to a patent leather formal for those who would have a similar preference...(I would suggest Allen Edmonds consider a plain toe formal slip on with a high vamp in calf as a style alternative to the Carlyle and/or Mayfair patent leather formal shoe). I now own four pair of Allen Edmonds shoes and will certainly make subsequent purchases going forward. Beautiful shoes and great service at the Madison Avenue and 44th Street location.

When Allen Edmonds announced the introduction of the Carlyle, my response was immediate. When you watch Fred Astaire, James Cagney, or Bob Hope dancing in a movie, these are the shoes they're wearing. Every detail is right, down to the flat waxed laces.
As usual, the fit is fantastic. The single oak sole is flexible and comfortable. This shoe is ideal to wear with your classic-cut suit of any era. You will not be disappointed.

Stunning in their simple, classic design and in their sturdy, unyielding construction. Lesser shoes would have creased by now. I do wish they were fit for all day standing out of the box, but they look and feel great for walking, sitting compared to other Oxford type shoes.

I gave this as a gift to someone and will be exchanging for a wider width. Shoe is beautiful though. Will last him the rest of his life as he just needs them for special occasions and not everyday where. Classic, timeless man's shoe!!

Ordered the Carlyle Plain-Toe Oxford in a 7E, was too narrow, and Allen Edmonds does not offer Carlyle Plain-Toe Oxford 7 EE and had to return. I have Allen Edmonds Jefferson and Hopkinson in size 7E and they are a perfect fit. Too bad I had to return because they were too narrow, I really was looking forward to adding these to my everyday office attire.

I got oxblood and lemme tell ya. These are sharp! The shape of the shoe is excellent. Not as roomy as the Strand and my left shoe's tongue makes a hard crease on the toe. But overall they look terrific!

Allen Edmunds shoes and belts are great product. Excellent craftsmanship and great style. Up to date style but not 'trendy'.
Downside: shoe size tends to run larger. So half size down is too small, same size is too large.
