This is the best travel duffel ever - use it as a carry on and it holds everything. Yay!

This bag is awesome! Solid, durable, tough and easy access to gear not to mention "Fun"ctional! I use it for hauling ALL my gear whether it's alpine or rock climbs, mud runs or mt. bike...it all goes in the base camp duffel. The best part is the shoulder harness that carries just as comfy as a high end backpack. The lockable zippers are a plus for when I travel too. Overall, pick one up! It will end up being your go to gear bag

I purchased this duffel as a carry-on while I was traveling and fell in love with it. I now use it weekly for overnight stays, traveling, and gym runs. It is very durable and reliable. I would recommend this duffel to anyone! Great buy!

Got a small for a carry on size. Works great! Love that it can be either a duffle bag or a back back. Makes it much easier.

I recently purchased the medium bag. I was surprised how big it is. Consider it a larger duffel bag if you are trying to determine what size to order. The bag itself is super durable. It also doubles as a backpack if you like. I would not hesitate to get another one.

i don't know why we didn't buy this bag years ago. We've gone through plenty of duffels and now my daughter needs a reliable bag to take to Africa - so we bought the base camp. We are confident that this bag will travel the world with her for years to come.

I recently bought this pack for short trips and it is great. It is the perfect size to carry on a plane. I like how rugged it is and I expect it to last a long time. I can put all the kids things in for overnight trips or pack extra camping gear in there. I will probably buy another one in a larger size.

I have used the l and xl versions of this bag for trekking adventures worldwide. When it came time to chose a bag for an upcoming tour, I wanted a carry-on with backpack straps for minimalist travel. I prefer this to a traditional backpack because of the waterproof nature AND the simplicity of design (no outside pockets to be rummaged through). While the new colors are bright, cheerful and tempting, I went with a traditional black-- to stand out less while touring cities. Great, simple bag!

I'm currently using this bag to haul my law enforcement gear: riot helmet, gas mask, baton, flashlights, knifes, amo, two pairs of jackets and other misc items. This bag is tough and the shoulder straps make carrying this bag easy. Its a good looking bag and has caught my co-workers eyes, which I'm sure they'll be purchasing the same type of duffle sometime soon. GREAT PRODUCT!

Purchased this bag for my trip to Europe this summer...I really don't think the airlines will be able to destroy this bag!!! The construction is top notch and the material is thick. I fit a lot more than I thought I could, too. I love that it has backpack straps...will make traveling much easier. The navy color is awesome. I would say the only minor thing I have is that the zippers take a bit of pulling and tugging to move. Even when the bag was empty...but it's not enough to rate it less than 5 stars.
Great purchase!

I got this bag as my work duffel since I work on Bering Sea fishing boats. I had a large backpack, but it couldn't fit everything I needed. Many of my coworkers recommended The North Face Base Camp duffels as the best ones for this job. The bags are collapsible, which is fantastic since I often have just a small locker for my gear. They're tall enough I can fit large compression sacks vertically and still put my boat shoes or a fleece on top. I've stuffed this bag full and can get about 70 lbs worth inside. Not that I should be walking around with that much in my bag, but it's nice to have that option when what is inside is what sustains you for three months. I've had my bag over two years now and use it most of the year. It has been craned, dragged, thrown, sat on, and kicked; been on countless planes and autos; and dealt with rain, snow, mud, gravel, etc., and yet it still is in like new condition. I got the black bag and put a long piece of duct tape on top to distinguish it as mine, so it's pretty easy to customize and spot coming down the luggage carousel. The side, top, and backpack handles create several grab points, which have come in handy numerous times on the airport carousel or in the back of a car when I've needed to grab it quickly and get out of the way.
I agree with another review that a pocket for paperwork would be nice, although I think that could potentially take away from its compressibility or the large, open interior. I thought the open interior would bother me as I'm one who always buys backpacks based on the number of pockets and ability to organize. However, I've had no problem organizing this bag with some compression sacks, ditty bags, and Ziplocs. Turns out it's a good thing there are no interior organizers or I wouldn't be able to fit what I needed.
I won't testify that they're totally waterproof; however, my bag has sat in a pile of snow with more snow and rain coming down on top of it for about an hour and I never had a problem with anything inside getting wet.
Since purchasing my bag I have encouraged more of my coworkers to invest in this duffel. They, too, have absolutely fallen in love with it.

This bag easily packs for several weeks with room to spare!! Went from a week of helping friends pack to move to time on the boat to a snow trip in the mountains!! Perfect for every situation & didn't have to worry about the contents getting wet!! Love the color too!!

I'm a wildland firefighter and I use this for my "two week bag." This bag keeps all my personal gear in great shape and in a bag that has a size that's just right.
The bag is water resistant (on the heavy side). Others complain it's not water-proof. I use separate, lightweight dry sacks to compensate. These sacks also segregate items.
The picture shows the duffel as round, but every bag I've seen seems to end up rectangular. I like that shape better for packing purposes, so it works out.
Zippers are large and durable.
The shoulder straps are only OK. Great for a short hike, but I wouldn't want to pack it miles through the woods to get to a fire without a waist strap. Hey, that's what helicopters are for...
Overall, I've seen other companies try to copy this duffel...fail. NF kills it with this bag. I would recommend this duffel to anyone, and I will continue to use this duffel until something better for the price comes out.

Great bag, bomb proof, I use this bag now for almost 10 years, during my outdoor pursuits, as for my job (offshore oil and gas) It can stand allot of abuse, but it is easy to repair.

Great bag. Sturdy, spacious for a "small" bag. My only "complaint" -- a small zippered compartment would be a great addition.

I love this bag. I started by buying the medium size and fell in love with it. I've gone on to buy every size North Face carries. This bag as seen the world with me multiple times over, including rainstorms in Thailand. I have yet to have trouble with the waterproofing.
If anything, I've had a few holes burned into the fabric from being dragged around by airport baggage handlers. The holes have never burned RIGHT THROUGH, but I have spots where the fabric is worn thin. I used patches from a wet suit repair kit to cover the holes and it's like new again.

I took this bag on an extended camping trip, and it was amazing! It got thrown off a roof rack on the highway, and is still barely scuffed up... I would buy this bag again! I happened to be on the beach, and even though it rained nearly every day my stuff was always kept dry inside!

People told me these bags are bombproof, they are the last duffels you ever need to buy etc. etc. I got mine, a large one, and it turned out all those adjectives were true. The bag sometimes looks a bit miserable when it comes out at the airport, dirty and oily. If it's too bad, I throw it under shower in the night place and it's all shiny again. If you really soak, it some water will get in, but never had any problems with this shower wash, all gear inside of course. It has got some scratches along the way, some 10 flights by now, but nothing that would make any difference to it's durability. The size of the large duffel is good for long trips during warmer periods, for extreme winter and climbing gear I will get the XL one.

I can't say enough positive accolades about this duffle bag. I had previously bought the medium sized bag to store and carry my scuba gear. Evrything fit but packing was a challenge. I bought the XL size for more room. Packing is much easier. The adjustable compression shoulder straps are great for carrying my gear. Being compactable is a plus when on a dive boat with limited storage. The durable material is resistent to salt water and rinses well. I have filled it with fresh water with all my gear in it and drained it with no issues. The bag travels well on airplanes as well. The only improvements I suggest would be a non mesh internal pocket for paperwork or other valuables and additional smaller pockets.
