To me, this RHO LTW beanie serves two different categories.1) For activities with low physical activity where your head needs 'just' a bit more insulation to increase comfort. 2) As an emergency base layer when you cannot keep your head and ears warm and you're dumping too much heat irrespective of physical activity. I see this beanie fulfilling both scenarios that I outline but bought the RHO LTW more-so for scenario two- an emergency layer. If you are looking for magical extreme warmth from this beanie- you are looking in the wrong place. There just isn't enough mass to retain a ton of heat. However, using it in a layering system stretches the ability for heat retention (as we all know). The RHO LTW is thin enough to be worn under another beanie, toque or balaclava. Also the fit is more like a skull cap (look at the photos others have posted), hense putting on something over it works well. I have tried this method with both my balaclava and toque without issue. I have included pictures of my RHO LTW, my RHO AR balaclava and my waffle toque measuring the thickness using my digital caliper. I didn't compress the material but slid material back and fourth until I had very slight resistance. Note: the RHO LTW is measured at the hem, meaning the other surface area of the beanie is half the measurement in the photo. While not exacting, there is a clear difference in thickness and as to why the RHO LTW may be a let down to some of you expecting tons of warmth. Build wise it does feel delicate (which is a point of contention to other reviewers). IMO, the stitching of the hem can be done better. There are two Single-Thread Chain Stitches about 3mm apart from each other going around the circumference of the hem. This is the most basic sewing stitch and is prone to breaking when stretched a.ka. this type of stitch has a low tensile strength. A Covered Chain Stitch or Overlock would be more appropriate as these are far more robust and allow stretching and moving as the beanie is put on/pulled off and really cannot be practically over-stretched to the point of breaking. The additional weight of the thread or length of thread used in the two aforementioned stitch types are trivial IMO. Beanies in general aren't really prone to high wear and tear or abrasions so even though the merino wool is thin, longevity can be achieved. I don't see myself wearing a hole through mine in the foreseeable future. Regarding care, when you wash it, throw it in a sock or one of those washing bags so it doesn't get beaten by other clothing with zippers or buttons. Ultimately, wear it and enjoy it. If it prematurely fails; warranty it. Arc'Teryx collects data on all their warrantied goods and uses that data to weigh product revisions.

I'm a toque/beanie guy and I find it hard to find good fitting beanie. This one is perfect! Made from merino wool so I can wear from late summer through the winter to early summer. (I shave my head so the beanie is basically my hair haha). This beanie feels great against the skin, it's not itchy like some materials. I must have almost 20 of these. I like my beanies nice and snug fitting and these look and feel great. These do stretch over time after many many wears and washes. The shape can be brought back by throwing them in the dryer on rare occasions to shrink the beanie back to original shape. My only beef with these beanies is that Arc'teryx isn't making black ones this year. I'm glad I stocked up on these in advance :)

I have a lot of beanies... almost an obsession. But this one is awesome. Fit is perfect, texture is cool and the color (Wander) really nice... and what about delivery that was quicker than Fast & Furious. Arc'teryx BIG Thanks !

Such a simple item, but so useful. I wear this daily during the fall months, indoors and outdoors. It's lightweight and thin enough to wear even if it's not too cold, but warm enough when it is. Highly recommended.

It's surprisingly thin and lightweight. I had expected it to be thicker, but it's doing its job! I've only tried it on during a spring hike in the Adirondacks (haven't had a chance to try out any colder conditions) but it's perfect - not bulky, warm and breathes really well. My head was protected from the elements for sure. My husband wanted one too, so I bought another. This will also serve well under my bicycle helmet once the temps drop

This hat has been perfect for my intended use. It's surprisingly warm considering how light it is and it folds up so small that it can fit in my pocket along with my phone. It's maybe a little on the smaller side if, like me, you have a large head and protruding ears but with a bit of adjustment it keeps my head and ears toasty. Great hat!

I have always struggled to find the right beanie for outdoor activities during the winter time. Most beanies get too warm too quick with any exertion beyond a mild walk. This one has excelled at being just enough insolation to keep heat in while moving, of course the trade-off being it is close, but not quite enough insolation if standing about or being outside for short periods of time. I've largely used it in the 20-40F range between moderate hikes and more casual hikes and walks. It being a base layer, it doesn't have much in the way of style, it looks good, but understated. As such I put it as an active gear piece as style and insolation value doesn't hold up so well around town for me. It also fits just about right to where it doesn't put too much pressure on my ears like some beanies do after wearing for more than an hour. Love this little guy, and after writing this review, I'm thinking maybe I ought to buy myself another one. My only complaint is size. It feels just a tad too small. When I have my hair in a fairly short almost-buzz cut it fits well enough to cover my ears except my earlobe. It's not a big issue, since earlobes aren't usually the part of my ears that get cold, but I just wish it were about a 1/2-1 centimeter longer for me personally.

I have several different Arcteryx hats that I use for different temperatures and weather conditions. I was looking for a thin wool hat and came a across this Arcteryx Rho LTW Beanie. I really liked the simplicity of this one and ordered it in black to go with everything. At first, when I took it out of the bag, I couldn't believe how lightweight it was and was wondering if it would indeed keep me warm. I was pleasantly surprised how warm it was as I immediately went outside to do my "testing". The embroidered Bird logo is really pretty and the merino wool was super soft. The hat is small and can easily fold into a pocket. I plan on getting another one in the Rhapsody color when it comes back into stock.

I got my first one from a friend and fell in love with it. Then bought a second. It's my go to toque and I bring it whenever I think I may need a toque. I love this toque.

The RHO LTW beanie has been great for hiking in the late fall and early winter. And it looks stylish too. Warm down to -8C so far, below that would probably go hood up or with toque. I'm 6'1 with short hair and the one-size-fits-all is perfect.

I bought this hat last year and I use it for backpacking, snowboarding, and when I work outside. It is perfect for any high output activity and provides just enough protection yet does not over heat you. I ended up losing the first one so here we are on the second one and loving it too!

What I like best about this beanie is it folds up to almost nothing and so I can leave it in my pocket all the time and pull it out when needed. I have used it in -50 in northern canada and trekking in the Himalayas and it's the only hat I needed (in combination with a hooded jacket).

I acquired all four colors and I am very satisfied with this headwear. I wear alone or underneath my full coverage mountain bike helmet. I do not like bulky headwear and these fit the bill for my comfort. Just the right amount of warmth to break the edge but not like a slow cooker on your cranium. excellent quality/ fit .I can see wearing these all year round. The beanies are that versatile. If there would be more color options I would not hesitate to purchase more. But that is how I feel; everyone is different. By the way I am not an employee of the company; I just speak what I feel!!!!!!!!

This is a super thin beanie style hat. It fits well underneath a helmet or even underneath another hat. It works very well for those that run hot or for activities where a thick beanie is impractical. I love this beanie so much I bought multiple RHO LTWs and one lives in each of my backpacks just in case. As a plus, the merino material is really warm and won't smell even five or six days of high use on outdoor trips.
