This beanie benefits from the magic of merino wool: it adds significant warmth, while rapidly wicking and evaporating sweat so that your head won't suffer from overheating or chilling effects of getting too wet. The material thickness is fairly light, so the best uses of this beanie are low to medium output in cool weather, or medium to high output in somewhat cold weather. For most people, I expect that the warmth won't be sufficient for low output in cold weather, nor for any output in very cold weather. For my head (small/medium hat size), the fit of this beanie is very good - it covers my head fully, including my ears, while being neither too tight nor too floppy. Some people find merino wool to be itchy, but I generally don't, and I've had no problems in that regard with this beanie.

i haven't wanted to wear another beanie since i got this one. perfect fit, doesn't force my glasses to dig into my head. can be worn under something else if necessary. comfortable to wear at night and sleeping while camping. doesn't get too hot if worn for extended periods indoors.

To me, this RHO LTW beanie serves two different categories.1) For activities with low physical activity where your head needs 'just' a bit more insulation to increase comfort. 2) As an emergency base layer when you cannot keep your head and ears warm and you're dumping too much heat irrespective of physical activity. I see this beanie fulfilling both scenarios that I outline but bought the RHO LTW more-so for scenario two- an emergency layer. If you are looking for magical extreme warmth from this beanie- you are looking in the wrong place. There just isn't enough mass to retain a ton of heat. However, using it in a layering system stretches the ability for heat retention (as we all know). The RHO LTW is thin enough to be worn under another beanie, toque or balaclava. Also the fit is more like a skull cap (look at the photos others have posted), hense putting on something over it works well. I have tried this method with both my balaclava and toque without issue. I have included pictures of my RHO LTW, my RHO AR balaclava and my waffle toque measuring the thickness using my digital caliper. I didn't compress the material but slid material back and fourth until I had very slight resistance. Note: the RHO LTW is measured at the hem, meaning the other surface area of the beanie is half the measurement in the photo. While not exacting, there is a clear difference in thickness and as to why the RHO LTW may be a let down to some of you expecting tons of warmth. Build wise it does feel delicate (which is a point of contention to other reviewers). IMO, the stitching of the hem can be done better. There are two Single-Thread Chain Stitches about 3mm apart from each other going around the circumference of the hem. This is the most basic sewing stitch and is prone to breaking when stretched a.ka. this type of stitch has a low tensile strength. A Covered Chain Stitch or Overlock would be more appropriate as these are far more robust and allow stretching and moving as the beanie is put on/pulled off and really cannot be practically over-stretched to the point of breaking. The additional weight of the thread or length of thread used in the two aforementioned stitch types are trivial IMO. Beanies in general aren't really prone to high wear and tear or abrasions so even though the merino wool is thin, longevity can be achieved. I don't see myself wearing a hole through mine in the foreseeable future. Regarding care, when you wash it, throw it in a sock or one of those washing bags so it doesn't get beaten by other clothing with zippers or buttons. Ultimately, wear it and enjoy it. If it prematurely fails; warranty it. Arc'Teryx collects data on all their warrantied goods and uses that data to weigh product revisions.

I have three. They're my go to in the winter. Not too hot or chunky. I tend to lose them before they wear out. I currently have three. I think. Wish they had more colors to choose from.

I've had several of these for many years. For the first half of their life they're really great because they're so thin and light weight yet can be pulled down for better coverage. I wear them daily in the winter regardless of temperature. If it's a bit colder and windy than my hood covers it but if you're really active you don't need to take it off because it's so breathable. But the ones I wear most often begin to loosen up after a a few winters and eventually the elastic totally dies leaving it so loose that it needs to be retired. It's a reasonable lifespan so no complaints.

This is a truly must have piece of gear. The one Beanie I use for everything. Take every nice thing I said about the Phase AR Beanie and put it here. I got so excited about this Beanie I reviewed it twice.

Keeps the chill off when the North wind is unpleasant especially on the ears; great when moving and allows the wearing of a(n adjustable) helmet or a closer fitting hood. Nice night cap in a bivvy!

I could not be happier. It doesn't get hit but keeps you warm on winter days above 10F with movement. If you aren't moving it probably wouldn't be terribly warm. Perfect for outdoor activities or throwing on in ski lodge.

This one is slightly thicker than 3 extremely thin ones I have from the Icebreaker brand. I like to have many colours, to fit with different jackets/scarfs. Packable, perfect to have as "emergency hat" in a jacket pocket. Perfect for winter running on mild winter days. Not windproof, but that is as expected.

This is my second Arc'Teryx LTW Beanie; my previous one lasted just over 3 years. I was skeptical initially with my first one but decided it was worth trying for the Merino Wool and the compact size and I was thoroughly impressed. The wool breaths well, I run and work in it, and although it seems thin it holds the heat incredibly well on my shaved head even in -30 C. It fits comfortably under a flight helmet and headset as well. I will continue to purchase as long as they make them :)

I can usually wear a toque for a few minutes until it drives me nuts, too tight, too itchy... I can wear this toque all day. It's easily stored in a pocket when not in use. Only down side is due to it's light weight if the temp. drops very (very) cold you may need something heavier.
