Real nice product. Works and looks good. Perfect weekender bag. Classic over the shoulder design. Comfortable to carry. I'm not a roller bag kind of guy so the Wingman is perfect for me. Easy to pack/unpack. Clothes stay flat and in place. Slightly wider shoulder strap would be my one suggestion.

The bag has lots of room and my laptop and iPad fit great. They were also easy to remove for security. I found the front pocket a little difficult to get things in and out of when the bag was packed. I preferred to keep things in the iPad pocket because the iPad provided more rigidity and made stuffing my passport and boarding passes in easier.
Also, when carrying it around the airport fully loaded it did become a little uncomfortable (I was carying it messenger style, but that's my preference). Also, the hooks for the shoulder straps did start to squeak after a while.
Overall it served me well, and I would recommend it as a carry-on.

Five weeks in India, with plenty of room in this bag. I just wish that there was some kind of waist strap for support when having to walk longer distances. Fits great in overhead compartments. The side handles are really helpful.

Was initially scared that the bag was not big enough to handle several 3 day weekend trips I had coming up. The bag was able to handle all my cloths for my trips. One pair of shoes, two pairs of pants, and 3 dress shirts.
Was able to carry all electronic gear with ease.

I love this bag. It is a perfect size but the company came out with the same bag with wheels shortly after I bought it. Wish I had that one as the wheels make it that much easier to get through the airport. But it is a great bag, well thought out and light. Love the backpack straps.

I went for the grubstake after getting shoulder pain from using messenger bags. The medium size grubstake is huge and great for hauling a laptop, books, notes and clothing. The bag is very comfortable on the bike, especially with the tubular pad at the base that rests against my waist when riding. And the bag is very uncommon around where I live, so I've gotten quite a few compliments.
The product description and all reviews all mention that, other than the laptop compartment, there are no other pockets, so I knew what I was getting to when buying the grubstake. Timbuk2 was probably trying to design this as a simple and unpretentious voluminous bag. Even so, it could use one or two pockets for keys, pens and change. That's really the only flaw.

Ok
This bag rocks! I have the three panel bag that crosses the chest but it is
small and I like to travel and move as light and with as little as possible.
AnyWHO this bag does the trick...yeah it did not have pockets on the interior but as the designer/creative being I am I put in pockets where I needed them inside this bag and that has taken my bag (for me) over the TOP!
Oh and I just get a blast out of the BRIGHT orange spot!
Would I recommend this to a friend- HELL YEAH!
thank you.

i'm into this thing. it's one huge sack, and i'm thinking it'll do a pretty good job of keeping the water out. what i especially love is that when it's stuffed with a laptop and books, i can still get my helmet on top.

Great! It is really really stupid big with a compartment for laptop which is what most people want. However, i would be nice if i had a smaller pocket inside so that we could store stuff like wallets and keys. That would make it 5 stars for me.

I use the bag to carry stuff around town when I'm on foot. GReat storage and simple design. I don't like lots of compartments, straps and zippers, so it's great. Good for groceries and clothes because of the big storage compartment. Also great for carrying the computer. I like that it looks unique, and the colors are great. Sometime I'd like to be able to pick my own colors.

I love the overall design of the bag. The bag has a very good fit and the space is unfreakingbelieveable. The only opportunity that I have about this bag is that I wish it had just small inner pockets or mabey one outside pocket to just store quick things that you need to get to. I notice when I put my wallet or something I need to get to fast, I go digging through my entire bag to find it. Just needs a small pocket somewhere on the bag for things that you need to get to quickly. The space in the bag is huge so you can be digging for a while looking for stuff. I commute to school using this bag and its really comfortable and I never have to stop and re-adjust the straps. I put so much stuff in this bag, but I never feel the weight of it.

This bag carries EVERYTHING. Two whole grocery bags with heavy stuff like milk and this bag hung in there like a champ.

Not sure about this as a backpack. The straps are placed too narrow, so will chafe along my neck. Aside from that, the bag is as expected - fairly large on my back, carry on the shoulder is about the size of two briefcases. There's a lot of utility.

I bought this bag at it's lowest price needing a backpack-enabled carry-on that would fit everything I needed for a week and have used it on three trips now. I wanted the Eagle Creek carry-on, but the price point was too high. The Wingman arrived damaged (ballistic nylon not as tough as it sounds) but I needed it for a trip the following day, so I sucked it up knowing I am going to do plenty of worse things to it than shipping does. The bag is very light, moderately durable, looks nice and is relatively low profile. I'm 5'6'' small build and this bag looks a bit awkward on my frame in the backpack and messenger configuration--I feel like a kid with an over-sized backpack. It could use some compartment system in the inside; though the shoe pocket is awesome and I like the little quick-access zippered pocket on the outside. Packing cubes would be beneficial to maintain a nicer form/organization. Plenty of handles to grab from out of a trunk or overhead bin to make a quick getaway while everyone else is heaving to get their rollers out without clocking someone in the face.
Overall, the bag serves it's purpose as suitability roomy and sneaky enough to be a carry-on.

Just took an 8 day trip to Nicaragua and although this bag is great for travel, ie: roomy, enough space for about a weeks worth of summer clothes. I found the backpack straps to be uncomfortable! Even with the chest strap clipped, the straps dug into my chest at the shoulder. They need to be more ergonomic, maybe with more of a creaent shape strap with added padding.

I used this for a 2 week trip to Alaska when I wanted to only take a carry-on. I also want it for future use for city breaks etc. The design attracted me as it seemed to be flexible with the various different carrying options.
The bag was great to use as it is roomy and strong, plus looks very cool in the grey carbon color. However, when full the shoulder/chest straps on their own are insufficient to carry the bag as it is big enough to be quite heavy with a full load of clothes/shoes/gear and gave me neck/shoulder ache in a way that a true backpack does not. It really needs a waist strap to make the backpack function useable. I found myself eyeing up a set of luggage wheels in the airport (which I resisted) and am now considering if I can make my own waist belt somehow to make it more useable in future. Other than this issue, it's a great bag with pockets in the right places and a spacious main compartment.

I write this review with the one-bag travelers in mind. I travel carryon only, domestic and international, and my preferred mode is a convertible backpack. Just makes navigating planes, trains, boats, city streets and remoteness so much easier. This bag really has many great features, great organization, and looks cool. But for anyone under 5'6" this bag is overwhelming to carry on your back. It even looks huge on the models in the photos! If you're packing this full, you'll break your shoulders and back from the poor weight distribution if you need to go any distance. If you want to carry 40L, you're likely better off with a true backpack, even though it won't look as cool.

Tried to use it for ease of travel dropping the roller bag and it works but wish there was a strap for my coat/jacket on the outside. Would've like another pocket on the top for smaller items. Bottom pocket crushes everything, but good for shoes. I'm returning it and getting a regular hiking backpack.

So, I bought this thinking it would be fantastic for short 1-3 night trips. It has enough capacity for it, has straps to convert to convert to a backpack (a feature I wanted), and is durable. For the most part, it works. It's meant to be a bag for you to carry everything in, but it falls short.
There is a huge glaring issue. The lack of interior pockets is astonishing, yet there is somehow a shoe compartment. You place all your things in this bag and anything less than the size of a shirt/pants/shorts just drifts around endlessly creating a big mess.
Toiletries, electronics, batteries, charging cords, headphones, iPad, laptop, water bottle, medications, snacks, and literally anything sized less than folded clothing is tumbled around in a big unorganized mess. I mean, how are there no small zippered pockets in this thing? Especially considering it's meant to be picked up and carried in a variety of ways. It makes no sense. You either deal with the mess, buy a second bag for smaller items, or have to use those packing cubes which still doesn't help a lot.
I hope Timbuk2 goes back to the drawing board for this one. Just add a few zippered pockets around the perimeter of the bag and this would be perfect.

I have the three of the original wingman bags, circa 2011 (two big, one small). They are much better than the current incarnation because the lapptop sleeve is next to your back, which helps distribute the weight better. In the current version, the laptop sleeve in the outermost pocket (farthest from your back), which means that it's easier to damage the laptop if you drop the bag, and the laptop's weight acts as a fulcrum to make the bag feel heavier.
Both versions take 4 packing cubes in the main compartment (I use the ebags medium, they fit perfectly). I've used two of these bags to pack a family of 4 for a week long trip. Both are MLC (maximum legal carry on) size for international cabins.
I pack these to the max and don't feel the need for a hip belt, which would possibly make the bag too big to be a cabin bag.
Finally, the ballistic nylon is amazing. After almost 8 years of use (3-4 long trips per year), the bags still look brand new!!

Bag material ripped after first trip. It wasn't packed to maximum consumption. The pocket that holds toiletries is located at the bottom of the backpack, so causes the bottoms of the bag to pull down. Length of bag as a backpack is just not functional for traveling and will cause you back to hurt from the pulling.

Just ordered this bag to test for a 1/2 year trip through Europe. The overall size and large size of all the pockets are fantastic. However, for a bag made to carry as a backpack, the straps are ridiculously uncomfortable. The straps are sewn very close together, and hit right at my neck (I am 5'4 with narrow shoulders). Even had others try it on and they agreed. Tried it with a detachable hip belt I own and it made a HUGE difference in comfort. Also inner pocket is not mesh - which would have been nice.

Deceiving, I thought it had a strap to attach to a larger bag when the handle is extended.
