I spent a good deal of time looking through the Frye website and reading the reviews on the boots that seemed to be the type I was looking for, before purchasing the Melissa. I have another Frye boots, in reddish brown-high heels that I just love. having had prior experience with Frye boots I really wanted to get a flat heel, more of a walking type Frye boots. I certainly found what I was looking for. the boots are lovelier than the picture shows, they are very well made, the leather is soft and the side zipper makes it very easy to put on/take off. I got my size (I am 7) and it fits great-so, I would say buy the size you are and not bigger/smaller. I have had the boots for about 2 months and have worn them to work/casual with skirt/skinny jeans and they look great either way. I have walked in them for hours and except for the initial breaking in (which gave me blisters on my heels), they are pretty comfortable for long walks as well. I have wider feet and these boots fit me perfectly. one thing that I had read in some reviews was that the flap on the back of the boots on top was bothersome for some when sitting down. I agree that it is a bit annoying but nothing major.

LOVE! A little pricey, but I don't mind paying for great quality that I know will last. These are going to take a little time to break in, but are not uncomfortable. The leather is amazing and the smell of the leather is one of my favorite things about these great boots. I have worn them a few times, now. I even wore them for a walk around town window shopping. The support is great and I feel that they run true to size. I ordered my regular size and they fit nicely. As I said, these are not uncomfortable, but once they break in. WOW! Lots of compliments, too! Get 'em!

This is my second pair of Frye boots and I just love them! I have the Melissa back zip(size 9)and thought these were a little more narrow around the toe box. I bought the 9 1/2 because I didn't want to take the risk and they not stretch. Now I can wear a thick sock comfortably and my toes don't hurt. I bought the redwood color and it is just beautiful. It's a brown with the perfect red tint to it. Well worth the money.

I don't normally write reviews on items that I buy, but because I am 6' tall, I rely heavily on what other say. These boots were too good to stick with my norm, so I decided I HAD to write a review. It took me a long time to decide to spend the money on Frye boots. After multiple tries with different boots that I didn't really love I decided to finally take the plunge and shell out the cash for Frye's. These boots are great!!! It is hard to find boots that are the right height and the right calf width for my long/skinnier legs. The second I put them on, I knew I was going to keep them (with the permission of my husband). Couldnt be happier, now I think I might need them in Black! My only complaint would be the blisters from breaking them in, but after a few wears, they are super comfy!! Money well spent! You can consider me the newest Frye lover! :)

I have never purchased a pair of Frye boots before but wanted to replace my black riding boots. I read the reviews for these boots and decided to give them a try. These boots are beautiful, comfortable and such high quality! They are definitely worth the extra. I will be purchasing Frye boots in the future!

Super gorgeous boots, but they are really tall in the shaft height and too big for my knee/calf. The color is gorgeous though and they are very refined looking with nice thick leather. A+ if they fit you properly.

These boots came a long way. Bought on line at Zappos. Shipped to New York to my mother's home. My Mom then shipped them to Israel. I haven't owned a pair of Frye's since I was a teenager. My exact size is a ten and a half. I ordered these in a size eleven. The width is perfect. The legnth is a drop long but I will keep them. I wear knee length skirts and these come right below my knee. They are more beautiful than the picture. They are a work of art. All the other reviews are 100% accurate. The leather is soft on the inside and weathered on the outside. I have taken them out if the box and tried them on all afternoon but as luck would have it there is a heat wave today in Israel. Not yet boot weather. I can't wait to wear them. I bought them in the burnt red soft vintage leather. They look like they are crafted to last a lifetime.

These boots are fantastic. Perfect shaft height, beautifully crafted. Worn with skinny jeans and dresses. Worth the splurge! Add Zappos wonderful customer service and fast, free shipping, and you can't go wrong.

These boots are absolutely gorgeous! I ordered them in the red colorway (forgot the name), and they're not quite as red as pictured. They're somewhere in between whiskey and bright red, which ends up being very unique and surprisingly versatile to match. The quality of the boots is superb. When you open the box, the smell of leather just rushes out at you. The leather on the inside is buttery and soft, while the outside is sturdier and distressed. I ordered my usual size, and the fit is fine. My calves are average, I'd say, and I've still got some room at the top. They may not work for wide calves, but it might be worth it to give them a try, as the leather does stretch a bit. I was hesitant to spend the money, but these are totally worth the investment!

I finally found them and the perfect boot! I could shoot myself for buying 6 pairs of boots that weren't quite right over the last couple years, thinking I just didn't want to pay the money for something like this. This is my fifth pair of Frye's, and these have to be my favorite (although I wear my Veronica Slouch boots daily). These will be my go to boots for more dressy occasions. Beautiful. I ordered my regular size (10B) and they fit just fine. My calves measure just under 16" with skinny jeans on, and these are snug, but I can get get them zipped. I know they will be perfect with a few wears. I am also extremely happy with the Redwood color. Only complaint is that the bottoms are super slick on carpet, but I can take of that easily.

These are quality boots: luscious leather, excellent construction, nice styling. Unfortunately for me they are just a bit too tapered in the front of the foot and so I will be returning them. The zipper was a little stiff but another customer said that that got better over time.

Very good looking boot, however the upper calf is slim, although M width. Never had a problem before. Must return.

I ordered these boots because I love the look and feel of Frye boots. I ordered a size 7 and it fit beautifully everywhere but the calf. I couldn't zip all the way up. I returned those and got a 7 1/2. Unfortunately, they had to go back as well, as the calf fit but my foot and ankle were swimming in the boot. I'm truly sad, as these boots are stunning.

These are gorgeous and stylish! The leather is of a beautiful quality and I like the harness detail. I've only worn these twice, however, and am working to break them in. I'm hoping the calves and the right foot will give a bit more with wear as they're a bit tight, but I'm very happy with my purchase!

These boots were a disappointment, being Frye boots. There is nothing soft about the leather! Very hard leather making them quite uncomfortable. However, they do run true to size.

Oh Frye, how you torture me. I am a Frye addict, and treat myself to a new pair every year or so. This year, the goal was tall black riding boot with a low heel. These are beautiful boots, thick leather, clean line, and tall, all of which I wanted. I have big feet (10 medium), and smallish ankles compared to my athleticish calves, so tall boots are tough to fit. Harness boots usually fit me well, but Melissa styles seem to run small. I was hoping for a miracle, but this was no exception. The foot part fit ok, but my other Fryes (notably Paige and regular harness) have much more toe room. The fit probably would have been ok, but the shaft was just too narrow for my calves. I got them zipped, but they were so tight, it made the ankles too slouchy. Also, others have noted that the pull tab on the back of the boot hits in exactly the wrong spot on the back of the knee when sitting down - and they are right. Probably the best fit for these are someone very tall, with slim calves, and narrow feet. If that is you, buy these, because they are gorgeous.

I own the Melissa boots and was really hoping for these to work! I where a size 11 and unfortunately they were to tight around my foot and hurting my ankle so much I couldn't even walk in them.

After reading the review of these boots, I wanted them! They arrived the next day and were beautiful - I got the Redwood Vintage Leather color and was so excited to put them on. That's where the excitement ended. The zippers were fine, the height was fine. I am 5'4". I ordered an 8 as that is my usual size and the length of the size was good. However, they were so narrow they cut off the circulation in my feet. I left them on around the house for a while to see if they indeed would stretch out a little bit because I so wanted them to fit, but I had to take them off. And I have a somewhat narrow foot. Maybe because they are handmade, there are variations in each pair but, unfortunately, this pair is going back. I don't know whether to try another pair of the same size or not. They are beautiful boot though!

These are beautiful boots. I could only be more happy with them if they fit better. I tried the size 7.5M (my usual shoe size), and I could barely get my foot in; could not get them to zip up for anything. So I moved up to an 8.0M. These feel a full (not half) size bigger than the 7.5s. If there were a size between, I would return these to get it. But I will just wear thicker socks and/or put in an orthotic (not much arch support in the footbed). So with regard to the sizing, I would say that it is not predictable: The 7.5 felt at least a half size (possibly a full size) small, whereas the 8.0 feels true-to-size. Also, I got the black, which may be helpful information for someone else, in case the sizing varies by leather color. I'm very very pleased with Zappos' return policy -- especially in light of the unpredictable sizing on this item.

I am so excited to get these boots! I love the materials, color, and quality. They are beautiful boots! I have the black multi, size 11. I was pleased to find that at this size, the shaft measures 18". However, the circumference also went up and my 14½" thighs have too much space in the boots, measuring at 15½". Damn. They would have been absolutely perfect if they would have stayed narrow as the size went up. They fit like a dream, though (in the footbed) and are, in fact, longer and narrower than any other quality boots that I have encountered. They are keepers!

This boot is beautiful but very tall and wide at the top. For reference, I am 5'6" with athletic calves. The boot zipped up but there was a gap at the top in the back. Not what I was looking for. Sadly, I'll be returning these. For this price I have to love them 100%.

These are beautiful boots. Unlike many Fryes they have a soft, smooth leather lining. I tried the Black Multi with the brown at the top. Rich looking in that color combination. Unfortunately, there is a pull tab that sticks up in back, right where the knee bends. For reference, I'm 5'7" and have fairly long legs, usually a 32" inseam. But this stiff leather tab digs in when my legs are bent in a seated position. I considered having a cobbler alter or remove the tab, but these boots are so expensive, I hesitate to buy them knowing I'll have to spend more money just to make them wearable. A weird little lapse of attention to detail in the design department. For those who can wear them comfortably, they are lovely.

Reviewers pls include your size! For the record this my 1st Frye purchase. Just found this one in a 9.5 for little more than 1/2 the cost on another site. I wear 9.5, 5'7 and found the shaft was too high for my liking (just below the kneecap) and my legs are avg length. Also, it felt like a sz 10 in the toe box, just looked too odd & long but fit everywhere else, so I've decided to return them. Lovely boot tho, I may try it in the Phillip 9 to see if the shaft height is shorter. (no support I will have to add an insole).

Nice looking tall boot. After walking for an extended period of time my ankles start to feel a chafing. I may be able to resolve this with the type of sock I wear.

Super comfy, super good basic black riding boots. I have a skinny calf, and these do feel a little roomy through the ankle and calf. I wish these were slimmer, but I've noticed pretty much all boots are going to a larger fit through the ankle and calf. It's hard to find any boots these days that are cut slim. Having said that, these are a great boot and very well-made. No break-in period needed.
