Best MTB shoes. The grip is excellent and they are stiff for pedaling.

These shoes are fantastic. They are well-made. They stick to platform pedals (almost too much). They are sturdy enough that you can walk in them just as far as you can bicycle.

I bought these because I decided to convert to flat pedals on my mountain bike, after decades of being clipped in. Great choice! The shoes are comfortable, secure, cool, and supportive on trails; they also work very well for hiking or just walking around. Should have gotten them sooner!

For reference, I wear a size 10 in Nike/Addidas. I ordered the 10 in this shoe and it fit me perfectly. The primary use is urban MTB and some moderate local singletrack and this review is as of 5 urban rides and 2 single track rides. For urban use (on wide flats Kore pedals), the stiff bottom of the shoe allows me to place the ball of my foot directly on the mid-outer section of the pedals, effectively making me "wider" for better stability at low speeds. I like this. Additionally, the pattern on the sole seems to seat around the pins to create the stickiness to the pedals. I like this as well. 9 of 10 stars. On single track/ XC, I usually switch over to Crank Bros. Doubleshot pedals (flat on one side with no pins, egg beater clipless on the other) because they are narrower and less likely to get snagged on a tight turn . Needless to say, I use the flat side. Since this is a smaller platform dimensionally, I tend to place the entire foot on the pedal and since there are no pins one would think there would be an increased amount of sliding about, but I did not find this. The rubber of the sole had enough "give" to keep me attached to the pedals and not slide around even when I hit some rough desents. 7 of 10 stars. Casual usage - I don't wear these walking around much because that is not really the intended use. But for the record, there are not all the comfortable if I spend the day at a festival or somewhere where I standing around all day......but they look really good! 7.5 of 10 stars

I love them! They grip my flat pedals like crazy. Much more grip than Nike 6.0. I actually found they fit 1/2 size small. I normally wear size 8 but needed an 8&1/2 in these. It feels like the toe protector (plastic) crowds the toe box of these shoes. Great shoes! Zappos is great like always!

Look great. Stuck to flat pedals like glue. Wore them for entire day after MTB ride and they were comfortable.

Never had 5 10s before. I was shocked the first time I rode with them how well they stick to the pedals. I was riding vans before. These are completely different in a good way. I would recommend them to anyway riding flats. They are also comfortable walking around in. Only complaint are the laces are very long leaving a lot of lose string once tied. You have to tuck the extra inside. 5 stars and would definitely buy again.

Bought the Freeriders in green and grey. These are my favorite pair of 5.10s. My last pair were the ImpactVXI. The freeriders are more comfortable, casual, and...they look better. Also, because of the material (soft and flexible) I don't feel like I have to pry them open to put my foot in like I did with the Impacts. While the upper is flexible and soft the sole remains ridged for maximum confidence while on flat pedals. I would say the grip is arguably similar to that of the Impacts (phenomenal). blah blah just buy them.

This is a good comfortable shoe and has a stiff sole to cushion your jump landings. I wish it was a little more grippy, but the construction of the shoe is great.

I purchased these for mountain biking. I needed a really flat and sticky surface and these were perfect! I wear a women's 7.5 and purchased these in a men's 6. They fit great!

This review is long term. I just ordered a replacement pair of Freeriders. The pair being replaced were everything I expected. I rode with them on rough singletrack over 3000 miles in the last 2 years or so. They stayed sticky. No delamination anywhere. Super comfy. You can walk in them! I've carried my bike over beaver dams in them. I ride all winter in the snow in them. The take a soaking no problem. I'm replacing them because they have holes wearing through the sole now but that's just wear and tear. They outlasted the tires on the bike but alas it's time for a new pair.

I'm 46 and after a few years of being away from MTB biking, I decided to get me the Specialized Fuse Pro 6Fattie. Anyway, watching YouTube, I saw a lot of riders, skaters, etc...wearing Five Tens shoes, well I ordered a pair from Zappos. Not only do they feel great on flat pedals; they're outstanding for everyday footwear.

I bought these shoes for the style and they turned out to be a quality pair of sneakers. I don't bike that much but when I road my mountain bike with these my feet never slipped off (very sticky) and super comfortable. I even look forward to walking my dog wearing these. Upper price range for me but the quality makes them well worth it. Definitely getting another pair!

Bought these for mountain biking, and they live up to their reputation for being grippy on the pedals. My feet used to slip off the pedals, especially when biking on wet or snowy surfaces. Not any more!

Sticky, sticky, sticky, sticky, sticky. Who needs to be clipped in when you have the FiveTen Freerider? This is my first pair and it won't be my last. When you couple these with a good set of platforms, consider yourself locked in and ready to ride. And no, they're not too sticky to the point where you unable to bail in hairy situations. If you have been riding in tennis shoes, hiking boots, flip flops or God forbid--crocs--please check yourself and get you a pair of these. You won't regret it. Lastly, there is no sacrifice in style! They look great while rippin' up the trails and kickin' it around the town!

I had a bit of trouble settling on this particular shoe because Five Ten claimed that I needed a size 11 and that the insole was not removable. I spoke with someone at Zappos and they also claimed that the insole was not removable and tried to steer me to a shoe that had a plate in the sole to which a binding could be bolted, like a ski binding. Well, I didn't want those and I didn't want toe clips. I wanted good sticky soles that would stay on platform pedals with pins. (Mountain bikers will understand.) I wanted removable insoles because I wear custom, full length orthotics. Bottom line, I guessed the size correctly, the shoes have removable insoles, and they stick like glue to the platform pedals. Brown County Epic ride, here I come - October 10th.

I bought these for daily use and walking rather than for biking, so take this review accordingly. The shoes look exactly as portrayed online, which is a good thing. These (gray & blue) look good with jeans and most other casual attire. I was worried about the lack of an extra wide option, but these shoes feel great. From the first wearing they have been comfortable. The first day I wore them turned out to be a day of more than usual walking. Normally that would not be the ideal day to break in a new pair of shoes. No problem with this pair though. Truly one of the most immediately comfortable shoes I have worn. I ordered my usual size and the fit is perfect. They feel comfortably wide, which usually requires an extra-wide for me. So I would say they fit very true to size and feel wider than they say. I haven't had any marking issues with the black soles, as same have mentioned. Maybe that requires more aggressive action like quick moves on a basketball court. These are now on my favorites list for future purchasing.

Bought these shoes for my wife and she loves them. Great fit, true to size. Note: these are WOMEN'S shoes and are sized accordingly. Zappos has them listed as men's shoes. Highly suggest these shoes for a fantastic flat pedal shoe.

Needed new shoes for biking in. Primarily a non-clip shoe that doesn't slip for commuting to work and 1-2 hour bike rides on the path. FreeRiders are super cush, and the size 7 fit my 8.5 feet perfectly. Just enough room in the toe. They are a touch wide, not too noticeable though. I wish I could have bought the charcoal grey/black, but those were sold out, so went with these. Grateful they came with an extra pair of black laces, as the bright orange wasn't my thing.

Great shoe, works as advertised, and I do recommend. I do have to say that that I was concerned reading about the poor quality that some others have written, but I think it's important to note that Five Ten must be on a second revision of this shoe because the quality issue has been solved. I use them for downhill mountain biking and have no complaints at all. This second revision holds up very well. The original version had a bald, or flat spot in the sole, which I believe had the quality issue.

If you mountain bike and use flat pedals, these are a must. Very sturdy, stiff sole and sticky. I feel totally confident riding fast down rough terrain, knowing that my feet will stay put. I've also used them for bike commuting in rain and they hold the grip there as well. Highly recommended.

The Five Ten Free Rider is similar to what I am use to in the old style skate shoe For the last 10 years I have bought old school converse skate shoes This time around I was unable to find the same shoe that fit I have a wide foot some consider triple E and then some just a regular D I have noticed all of the shoes I have tried recently are a size narrower than I have previously experienced so in the case of the Five Ten I have gone one half size up to accommodate my foot width. The Free Rider by Five Ten has a slightly wider and lower heal than other shoes I have tried or worn in the recent past. The shoes sole material itself is high on the durometer scale and I may need an insert for longer distance use. Overall I have no buyers remorse.

I bought these never owning a pair of Five Tens. They are true to size. They are a great shoe. They stick to my platforms so well I actually have to pick up my foot to re-position it on the pedal. Great grip and a comfortable shoe. I do recommend.

Since they don't make a women's shoe and I am a women I ordered a 5.5 men's shoe for my 7.5 female foot and they fit perfectly. Although I've heard some of their shoes are a bit wide - these were not. I put my superfeet insoles in and they hugged my narrow foot and heel. Now that I have gone flat I will never go back (to clipless).
