MW977 - Shoe top needs to be either above or below the ankle bone. Was initially a bit uncomfortable but after several days is fine. I wear these to work on concrete floor all day and they are very good. Have been out in 12" of snow for short periods and shoe has remained waterproof, although short shoe tongue could be a problem under tougher conditions. I think this shoe was pricey but for what I'm asking of it the shoe has done well.

New Balance MW977 - They are very supportive and rugged yet also very flexible. Not comfortable at first, but after wearing them in for a few weeks, I am satisfied with the comfort. The tongue is not cushioned enough and can dig in to your foot. The back support of the ankle digs in at the two points, but this improved once the shoes were worn in a little.

Good, Not Great - I've been through 4 different sets of insoles (Spenco, Lynco, Superfeet and DK Sole) in my 977's but nothing works very well in them. There is little or cushion at the ball of my foot. There is not enough volume in the shoe to use thick-cushioned insoles. Heel cushion and counter are good though. The uppers are built really well and broke in nicely in very short period of time. NB could make these a great shoe by putting a Vibram sole on them.

Low cut hiking boot - I am a 61 year old diabetic who is looking for a comfortable non-binding lightweight hiking boot. I am also a size 13 X 4E width. First of all I was amazed at how quickly they arrived (even during the Christmas season peak). The shoes feel good, and I have been wearing them daily (just for an hour or two or four) to get them broken in. And they do need some breaking in, but overall they were quite comfortable from the start and they are just getting better as things loosen up and flex a bit. The soles are really great on sharp gravel and similar terrain. I am a big fan of New Balance and these shoes met my expectations. And the Zappos service & delivery time was awesome. Bill

Well I am currently wearing a pair of NB452 - nice crosstrainer.

A little narrow in the toe area... I had to "break them in" mainly because the toe area was a little narrow, but it was only a matter of a couple of walks and there wasn't really any pain or anything. Now that they have been broken in, I love them, very comfortable and sturdy. Zappos shipping was excellent, got them earlier than expected. Thanks!

Perhaps more durable than most - I was looking for a more durable work shoe and this did require a little breaking in which might indicate a longer lasting product than the softer shoes. It seems well made and durable.

Good for narrow feet - My husband has very narrow feet and these fit great. He loves them and wears them hiking in the woods with the dog.

Almost Great Out Of The Box - Received these shoes a few weeks ago and wore them around inside for several nights before deciding to keep them. Out of the box from Zappos, the leather on the toes looked worn - too light for the rest of the shoe and not uniformly dark as I saw in some local shoe stores. Zappos said they were shipped direct to me without having been previously returned from another buyer. Also, in the house they were perfectly comfortable with a very roomy toe box. The first day I decided I liked them enough to wear outside, the side of the right shoe immediately began to "cut" into the side of my foot at the seam whenever the ground was uneven. That went away gradually. Even though these may look like sneakers, they need to be "worn in" like boots. Also NB's QC on leather consistency on a shoe (or for a pair) needs work. Otherwise, so far, great shoes.

Great Comfort and Look - Only weakness is poor traction on mud and wet plants (and snow?). Also feet got very wet until I applied a wax for Gore-Tex/leather boots. I may get another pair before they change anything.

Another good tough walking shoe from NB - Good solid shoes. One complaint -- the tongue should have more leather and it should come all the way up to the top so that the laces do not cut into the top of the foot.

Work Shoe - I moved to this shoe because I couldn't get the 976 shoe anymore. It is a good shoe in its own way but it is not the same as the 976 which I loved. I use orthotics which it accommodates well. It has a nice feel to the step. It is warmer than the 976 shoe not good for the warm climate but maybe ok for colder areas.

Practical hiker - Lightweight, comfortable shoe with a good sole design that easily releases mud, sand etc. rather than tracking it into your car, house, etc. Lacing system works well too.

A bit small - Comfortable, but smaller than my other New Balance shoes. I sent back my size 11 and replaced with 11.5, which is still a bit snug.

First extra wide hiking shoe for me - For years I have suffered with owning shoes that were too larger so they can fit my extra wide feet. It is nice to find some that fit right. I purchased the 9 4E and size was right on the money. This shoe has some stiff construction, so don't expect it to stretch out if it’s too tight on you. The sole is stiff too, so it will take some time for the shoe to break in to roll with the ball of your foot.

Sorry, I have to return it. It looks great on a picture, but it does not seem so comfortable in real life, I am sorry. I am going to return this shoe and get a different one. Thank you, Zappos, for your excellent return and exchange policy!

Warm - The shoe is comfortable, but my feet get warm when wearing inside. A little more ventilation would be nice.

Tops of shoes bothered my ankles, but I like low cut shoes. Soles not stiff enough to stop rock pressure.

These shoes are not as comfortable as I would have hoped. The back digs into my heel and can be painful. They are, however, very warm and water/snow proof.

I ordered these shoes for a trip to Alaska. I chose them because of NB's reputation for sturdy supportive arches. I found these shoes to have less support that their typical athletic shoes and was disappointed. Otherwise they look great, seemed to hold well.

Nice-looking but uncomfortable - In a size 11 4E, this shoe has a very high toe box, pretty good width, though as with almost all NB shoes the angle of the outside edge of the shoe cuts in a bit too sharply for my spade-shaped foot, squashing the little toe. Easily accommodates a rather large orthotic. Biggest problem is the top of the shoes, though. The bottom end of the panel to which the eyelets are attached ground downward into the top of my foot; this appeared to be a problem that would not get better with break-in, so I returned these.

Hard spot @ little finger - The shoe fit well but the outside lower longitudinal seam and the toe seam on my shoes is much higher than shown in your picture. This intersection creates a hard spot that rubbed the top of my little toes on both feet raw after about a 6 mile mountain hike. Do you have a boot without all the longitudinal seams that is an 11 EEEE?

These aren't hiking shoes by any means. They seem well made but they are not comfortable and even though they look nice on the website, they are ugly to me. New Balance needs to work on their line of boots. Their other shoes, cross-trainers, running, walking, they are very good. I have also tried a pair of their boots and they were very uncomfortable. These will also go back to Zappos. Zappos has great service!

Perfect - easy to pull off and on. Very little arch support though. These are comparable to ugg boots as far as arch support. They are warm and comfortable otherwise and you can fit baggy jeans in to them.

Works for me- I am 6'2" and wear a size 12. Finding a shoe/boot that fits is always a hassle. These felt great right from the start. I feel like I can spend a whole day walking in them. I am beginning to wish they were a little taller for some snow protection.

I tried on the boot and discovered they are a half size too small. I have never had this problem with New Balance before. I wish Zappos would clearly mark the country of origin on the product description page. All previous New Balance shoes I have bought were made in the US. I rated them 1 star because there is no "no rating" option.
