Love at first sight; however, when I got them in the mail the fit looked odd on my leg. It made my calf look wider than usual and the shaft came up incredibly high, which is great for dress boots, but not for causual. I'm 5'9", so shorter women may have an issue. I returned these and ordered the Melissa button boot instead. Also, as a note, both these and the button run large. I had to go a 1/2 size down.

I have been waiting all year for these boots and finally received them from my husband for Christmas. When I tried them on they were way too tall for my tiny frame. They made my legs look shorter than they are. I still think the boots themselves are beautifully made, but if you are petite like me, perhaps these aren't the boots for you.

I tried these on at Macy's just today. I thought that in person and on Zappos they looked quite fitted, but when I put them on, they really screamed "work boot!" I'm someone whose wardrobe consists of skirts and dresses because this skinny jean trend just isn't working for me, so I needed boots to keep my legs warm during the winter. But these boots are just way too casual and clunky looking to pair with anything I wear; my legs looked like inverted triangles! Or a peg leg! Maybe stick to wearing them with skinny jeans? Oh, and they were a major pain to get on, even though it was definitely my correct size once I got them on. Whoever mentioned having to get their husband pull them off of her feet at the end of the day was right!

Sigh. I really, really wanted these boots to be *the* perfect black boots I was going to wear for years to come. Unfortunately, I had to return them and continue my quest. The problem was the ankles... way too baggy and not attractive at all! They looked very sloppy. If you are looking for something chic and sleek, you might want to look for a different boot. These seemed a bit too dowdy for me. However, thanks to Zappos once again for shipping them so quickly and having such an awesome return policy. I will continue to shop on this site until I find my dream black boots.

My first pair arrived "worn", the paper was crinkled, there was not stuffing inside the boots, the soles were clearly walked on. I got on the phone with Zappos and they quickly fixed this by sending out a replacement pair. This time they arrived in pristine condition! However, I have a high arch, I wear a 7 1/2 in most every style shoe/boot and there was no way possible for me to get my heal into the base of the boot. I tugged and pulled, but nope, not even with a slinky nylon knee high would make it work. So unfortunately, they had to go back. I loved the look, the color was perfect, just couldn't get my foot into them.

I just received my Paige tall boot yesterday and I love it! Great fit for my 14 3/4 calves. Color is exactly as picture. Tried with some short dresses and it is so cute!

I bought a pair of these boots in 2015, as well as 2 pairs of melissa button boots. I did not wear them everyday, and in fact rotated my boots often to match outfits and so on... My Melissa's have held up AMAZING, but these soles have worn so poorly that they cracked and a have a hole. My cobbler couldn't repair them because they would lose their shape :( so disappointed because they are comfortable and cute.

I couldn't even get these boots over my heel to see if they fit. Weird angle, no zipper. I've never had this type of issue before.

I know that this is a lovely boot, but it fit me like a rain boot. The leather seemed a little plastic. Sending them back.

So disappointing. The Cognac Smooth Polished Veg color looks cheap, almost like painted plastic. There is no arch or footbed support, and the yoke around the upper foot is loose and poorly shaped. These would look cheap at half the price. One positive is that I have rather muscular calves and the shaft fit comfortably.

I wanted to love these boots, but the heel support is hard and the side of it sticks into the soft inside of my foot. It hurt the moment I put them on and just got more sore as I walked around for a minute. Also, the bottom is so smooth I felt like I could slip at any moment on my rug or wood floors.

Very disappointed in these boots. They are not stiff and stand straight up, but instead have a crumple/wrinkle in the area between the ankle to mid-calf. This makes wearing them very uncomfortable, as well as making them look bad. I can't tell if I simply got a "bum" pair. I may ask zappos to send me a different pair to see. Only positive is that the leather is beautiful.
I'd also recommend:
I welcome others' recommendations for leather as nice as Frye w/17" shafts but fit thick calves

I really wanted to love these boots but they were just too tall and too tight at the top of my calves. I'm 5'2" and these crinkle too much in order to fit in my calves. The leather smells wonderful and are a beautiful color though.

I can't review these boots other than the beautiful grey color because I cannot get them on! Anyone have any ideas?

These boots are beautiful and obviously well made, but I couldn't get them on right. My calf measures about 17 inches at the widest point, and I wear and ordered a size 10. I couldn't pull these boots up over my calves enough to get my heel in right, so of course, they were super uncomfortable. I returned these and ordered the Veronica slouch wide calf instead and love those (shaft height is lower in the Veronica slouch so doesn't need to fit over the widest part of my calf). Thank you, Zappos, for your wonderful and easy return policy!

Living in colorado I looked endlessly for a pair of boots that would hold up here in the mountains. The first red flag was the heel had already rubbed away down the the leather sole within 3 months. Then a few months later the stitching is coming undone around the toe of my right boot. I hate writing a sad review but dang it I can't even wear them now. The fit is perfect and the leather is beautiful. I am sad to say I had a pair of cheap-o madden girl boots hold up longer. Definitely not a "riding boot" made for riding your horses or even out to the store.. I love frye boots but i'm scared to ever buy a pair again.. gave two stars because the fit and leather is beautiful and they go with everything.

I really want to love these boots, but so far no luck. I have only been able to wear these boots once so far, and that is because the first time I wore them, they tore apart the back of my heel where the boot bends when I walk, and therefore dug into my skin, leaving open sores. I also find the boots to be very tall, so they hit my knees when I walk. They are very difficult to get on and off with their slip on styling. I still am hoping that these will be great once I break them in. That is, if I can ever even wear them again.

I bought a pair of these boots last November as a 30th Birthday present to myself - I LOVED them. They fit like a glove, were stylish & oh so comfortable. I lived in them last year & got so MANY complements! However, this season, I broke them out again and within a few weeks, the soles are pulling away from the boots & there is a hole forming on the sole of my left boot. It is such a disappointment. I splurged on these boots as I assumed they would last me YEARS. It was the only way I could justify the price, and yet, now - just a year later - I am having to take them into a cobbler to be re-soled. I still love the look & feel of the shoe, but it is hard to look beyond how quickly they wore.

I want these to fit so badly! I love them. Frye really needs to make some of these awesome boots in a zip up. I cannot get my heel past the turn. Man did I try. More Frye zip up styles and more with a wider calf!

I was so excited to read that these gorgeous boots have a 16" calf circumference on a size 7. I ordered a size 7.5 and my calf measures 15.5", so I just knew it was going to be perfect. Right up until I couldn't even pull the boot on all the way. SO SAD! The cognac color is so rich and the leather is thick and stiff so it won't be slouchy. But this boot is headed back (thanks for the free returns, Zappos!) to shine on a woman with slighter calves.

These boots are awful. I have been trying to find some Frye boots I could love but these are not the ones. They are very large and sloppy around my foot and yet a little snug across the toes. Huge around my ankle and yet they seem short from the toes up because when I stand up the leather stretches forward and it looks like I have elephant ankles. No arch support at all and much too loose around the calf too. Then there is the design of that extra leather wrapped around the shaft. Definitely sending back.

For the price, I expected these to feel like butter and be really comfortable. They pinch at the ankle and are not as wide in the shaft as I thought. The sole is very thin and there is not much support. They do look beautiful, so I'm sad to return them. My hunt for the perfect boot continues!

Okay, let's address some of the more popular reviews. Sizing: One reviewer stated she is 5'6, size 8, with a 15.5 calf circumference. I am 5'7, size 8.5 or 9wide, with a 15.25 inch calf circumference. I ordered a 9, because there wasn't a wide option as suggested by a Zappos employee. Really tight on my bare calves. I tried squeezing these on over thin leggings, but it just didn't work. The leggings were pushed upward on the leg and became bunchy. The length of the foot fit with thicker socks, but the heel? My heel was swimming with space and every time I took a step, my heel would fly out. I'd imagine someone with a high in-step would actually benefit from this, as I'm flat footed. Also, these boots were slightly difficult to get on and off, however, it wasn't a 10 minute process, as someone else stated. Nothing that would be embarrassing to deal with at an airport. Color: Disappointed off the bat! I ordered the Brown Burnished, since I thought the very dark brown would compliment most of my outfits. This boot is so much darker in the photo. Unboxed, it was much lighter than expected, but not enough to be considered light brown. I'd say more of a medium chocolate brown. Style: The distressed leather was right up my alley, sure. Great quality leather - yes. But the style wasn't as classy or sleek as pictured. I think it's the two little loops on the side to help pull the boot up that make it seem a little cowboy boot-ish. They were not flattering on my legs, as most boots are. They just seemed so bulky and thick. Think: Marshmallow Legs. Additionally, the legs do bunch. They're just too wide at the ankle. Did I mention how unflattering they are? Comfort: Without a doubt these boots are comfortable. Extremely comfortable when I put thicker socks on so my heel wouldn't fly out of them, but then they were too tight at the toe. If you're considering these boots and walk often, as I do. I'd only recommend these boots if you plan on spending a little more to have a professional add a rubber sole on the bottoms of the shoe. Otherwise you will fall and/or slip. My local shoe guy only charges $20-$30 to add a rubber sole for more traction. Also, I only recommend these if you have smaller calves! Don't waste your time with these, if you have any doubt, unless you're going for the unflattering look.
I'd also recommend:
Cole Haan, Sorrel, Ugg, Patagonia

These boots are great except the grey color looks more dark brown than grey. If I had known that, I would have bought another boot. I wish that Frye wouldn't name a brown boot, grey. It is misleading and the pictures online don't help.

I think my quest to try to find a pair of Frye riding boots that fit my high arches and athletic calves is officially over. The Paige riding boots are cute, but since my foot has a high arch I couldn't actually get my foot into the boot. For the price it's not worth it for me.
