I originally saw the Frye Dorado Riding Boot at Nordstrom in Brown and bought it in size 8 1/2. I usually take this size in a boot and put a cushion inside for comfort. I ultimately decided to get black instead of brown, so I returned the brown and found the black at Zappos and saved the tax. After walking around on carpet for a week or so, I noticed that the 8 1/2 Black started to stretch out quite a bit. At first it was fine. Then it got a little "sloppy" even with the cushion inside. There was heel slippage. I was able to try the 7 1/2 at Nordstrom and could not get my foot in, so I exchanged the 8 1/2 for the 8 at Zappos (all fast and no problem). At first the 8 was somewhat snug, but shortly after again walking around on carpet the 8 stretched out and now fits like a glove. These are gorgeous boots, all leather, and worth every penny you have to save up to get them. I have never seen them on sale anywhere. Niemans sells this boot, but not Macy's. They will last for years with proper care and not go out of style. My foot is slightly narrow, and I have purchased a 7 1/2 in sandals and up to a 9 in a boot, if that helps anyone. I have a slightly wide calf from skiing, skating and roller blading, and my skinny jeans fit inside just fine with a little room at the top - love that! They also look great with skirts or boot-cut jeans. If I win the Lottery, I will buy them in other colors! Did not get the Lug Sole, as this seems more casual, and I can put the grey stick on Non-Slip oval patches on the bottom to keep from slipping on the snow. (They work great on a clean and dry sole, but replace each year.)

Beautiful boot! I ordered an 8 after reading the reviews, I typically wear 8.5. I am returning the boots as they are a half size too small. They almost fit, they are just a bit tight in the toe box. An 8.5 with socks should work perfectly. I got the dark brown - classically beautiful.

After breaking them in first, wearing these beautiful boots around the house for a couple of hours for a couple of days, I was able to wear them for an all-day function. I do have a high instep and in the past have had to pass on tall boots that did not have zippers down the sides. This pair of Frye's went on easily the first time using the plastic bag method that others recommend, and after two days were sliding on without the white plastic "footies."

Great boots that look and feel good. They fit nicely around the ankles and the shaft of the boot goes all they way up to the knee. They are a bit slippery when new so be careful there.

The boots are amazing... Toe a little tight at first, but put in shoe trees for a few min. and they felt great. Heel does slip however not uncomfortable. They really are a beautiful stylish boot! Spend the money and get them. You won't regret it.

These boots are beautiful. I had been through a couple different pairs trying to find ones exactly like this. I had ordered a pair from J. Crew that looked similar and they didn't compare to these. They fit my big calves while still staying up nicely and are loose at the top (on purpose). They look expensive and luxurious and will clearly last forever. Also very flattering and make your legs look very skinny.

Got these boots after getting them for a killer deal with one left in my size. They are stunning, especially the color of the brown leather. These are the kind of boots that you see a woman wearing and think, "where do you get a pair of boots like that?" I'm 5'4", 105 lbs. They came right up under my knee - perfect. The gap around the calf was not too excessive at all. The ankles were a bit slouchy though - I thought they'd be a bit more structured. The heel did slip but after reading all the comments here about it and Frye's explanation on their own website, I'm confident that they will break in. When I put them on the toe area was uncomfortably narrow and I do not have wide feet. I took them to Boot Barn to have them stretched (they do it for free, fyi, even if you don't buy boots from there). They fit much better now, although the stretching slightly discolored the leather around the toe. I was bummed about this but they are still beautiful. Will see if Frye can match me with a polish to remedy the discoloration. Overall I don't regret spending the money! They are such a wonderful investment! The two tone is just so unique.

I really love these boots and would have kept them if the shaft was about 1 inch shorter and a little smaller. They just hit my knee in a weird position. I am 5 ft 4 inch tall and have average calf width.
Boots were good quality. I am going to try another pair of Frye riding boots.

They are fabulous. I will say they run a little narrow in the toe but seem to have stretched as I have worn them in. I also like that they have a wider calf look great over pants.

I love this style. It's very sexy for a flat boot and certainly quite classic. Tight at first, yes, but they will stretch and last forever. I ordered the Bordeaux textured color and it looked a lot different from the picture, so I am unfortunately returning them...will get them in a different color.

I took the plunge and bought these for Christmas after staring at them just about every day for a month straight. Like many other reviewers, I did not want to shell out the money for them, but after trolling the internet and stores in my local mall, there was nothing that even sparked an interest close to what these boots did when I looked at them. I bought them in black, and I love them. They are the greatest shoe purchase I have ever made. I was also hesitant about the sizing. I’m an 8.5 and that’s what I ordered. They fit perfect with actually a little room to spare (I do wear thin socks with them though). I agree they are slippery the first couple of days, but seriously, you need to wear them in and then after that they are completely fine! I love these so much, I’m hoping to buy the sand colored ones for next fall at some point this year. I have gotten so many compliments on them, and they are beautiful constructed. It is true that you get what you pay for. If you were like me and thinking that maybe a $300 pair would be just a good - maybe so, but I highly highly recommend just putting the extra money out for these boots. You won’t be disappointed. They are not tight on the calves though which is fine for me. I’m 5’6” and a runner so I don’t have thick calves nor are they super skinny. If you have super skinny legs, these may be a bit too big, but I’m average/slim and these are fine!

Decided I needed a great pair of boots. Looked everywhere and was truly disappointed in both the quality and craftsmanship in what was available in my little corner of the world, then remembered as a college student my favorites by far were my Fryes. Decided to take the plunge with Zappos whom I had never done biz with before and was really surpised! The boots are fantastic! And the service is impeccable! I wore them shopping the first day and by the second day they were broken in! No blisters, no rubbing! I'm 5'3" so they hit high on my knee at first and did have slippage in ankle, but by second day they were perfect! They have the same superb craftsmanship that I remembered 30 years ago! Yeah! And my teenage daughter thinks they look great, too! Would choose Zappos again in an instant! Thank you!

I just wanted to add these boots fit well for those with larger calves. I normally have to buy extended calf boots from J.Crew but these fit me perfectly. I am 5'6 1/2 and a clothing size 12 to 14.

I purchased these boots for myself in November and when my daughter saw them she immediately wanted a pair too, so she got them for Christmas. They are just beautiful, great leather and very tall. We both have long legs so they fit us very well. They would not be good on a shorter person. We are 5'8 and 5'9 inches tall. I usually wear a size 8, but had to send them back for a 7 and 1/2 because they were too big. As others have said, they do slip in the ankle when you walk. I wear a thicker sock to help with this. This is the best looking pair of boots I have ever owned.

Love these! The Bordeaux leather is just beautiful! I purchased these to give my feet a break from all my heels. I love winter and wearing my skinny jeans and knee high boots. I have a pair with buttons up both sides by Frye purchased two years ago that have been nicknamed "The Fabulous boots!" based on a compliment received while wearing them. I think all Fryes are fabulous. You won't regret your purchase. These riding boots are just beautiful and have found a welcome home in my closet. Thank you Frye! And Zappos for your outstanding service!

These boots are true to fit (I am a size 6) and they fit perfectly with a regular thickness sock. As for height, I thought they were perfect. I am 5'5" and they hit right below the knee and with some skinny jeans or leggings tucked in, made for a long lean line. There is heel slippage which I was able to remedy with those self-adhesive heel inserts. But eventually they have stretched to become comfortable even when walking for miles (I live in the city). I think they are a good investment because they are classic, high-quality and will last for a long time with regular maintenance. I am even able to wear them to work (I work in a corporate setting) with some black tights, black skirt and a stylish top. Highly recommended and Zappos delivery was speedy.

These are absolutely the greatest boots ever! They are very comfortable, although a bit roomy in the heel, and probably run a half size larger than marked, but the leather strap at the ankle helps the fit. Pants stay tucked nicely because they are quite high. The leather is so soft both inside and out. I wear them barefoot. The attention to detail is fantastic. They look great with jeans, skirts, and casual dresses. A friend saw them on me and purchased two pair for herself. The black and brown have the soft leather. The other colors have more of a pebble leather feel. As usual, Zappos service is great.

The only thing better than my new boots was the customer service Zappos provides. I bought these boots in Bordeaux, Black and Chocolate. I know, a little over the top! Like most Frye boots, I ordered a 1/2 size smaller than my usual shoe size and it was a great fit. Fryes usually feel a little narrow with some heel slippage for the first couple of wearings, but are soon broken in and feel like old friends. I also bought the Maxine Loop Pull On and it was immediately comfy. I got the Brick in a 5.5 and the Black in a 6 and there didn't seem to be much difference, both were really good on first wearing. Well I must go now. I have to take at least one of these pairs of boots for a walk!

The Frye Dorado Riding Boot: I love it! I am petite(5'3"), have slim legs and these boots look gorgeous. I bought the Bordeaux. It is rich & beyond. It took a few wearings to break in but they were definitely worth the patience. And, ladies, they are sexy! Stop thinking about them and just get them. You won't be sorry.

I\'m reporting back with the results on the Dorado Riding Boot by Frye. There was nothing I could do about the heel slippage. I tried socks, double socks, heel inserts, and entire shoe inserts. The only thing that occurred was that the boot became tighter in the toe area, but still slipped in the heel. I then tried to order another size down and received a pair of 8\'s. Because I normally take an 8.5 or a 9, the 8\'s were too small. They fit on my foot tightly, but they still slipped in the heel! In short, these boots were very uncomfortable. The only way I would purchase them with this flaw is if they were much cheaper maybe $99, but certainly not over $400. \r\n\r\n

I just love my boots! Frye boots normally look very western. This style is more of a fashion boot. I am 50+ and my daugther is 17. We both look appropriate in this style. Very comfortable, beautiful leather! I keep the foam insert in the boot when they are in my closet to keep the boots nice and tall.

Absolutely beautiful is the best way to describe these boots. They were comfortable the first time I wore them, no breaking in necessary. They are expensive, but totally worth it.

These boots are cute, but they slip in the heel and are tight in the toe box. Additionally they run big. I never wear an 8 anymore, but in these I definitely need an 8. For the amount I paid one would think that the fit would be perfect, soft and comfortable. It definitely was not.

Frye is the best. The quality will never disappoint you! These boots are great with skinny jeans, short or long skirts. Love them! I did order both a 9.5 and a 10 because others were saying to order a 1/2 size down. That didn't work for me; the 9.5 was too tight in the toe and loose in the heel. I have a narrow foot anyway, but the 10 is enough space without being too tight. They are still a little loose in the heel, but with a thicker sock, they're fine. I wore them around NYC all day the very first day I had them and my feet didn't hurt a bit! If you're debating whether these are worth the money, the answer is yes, buy 'em!

These boots are awesome. Ordered the fawn colored suede ones. Read other reviews which said they run big, but had to re-order my regular shoe size as the shaft was tight around my calf. The length is fine on the bigger size, so if your calves aren't "skinny", go with your normal shoe size. I love Zappos!
