Gortex vs. leather - I bought the Gortex version of the 977, but tried them both. They are totally different shoes. The Gortex one runs way smaller (I finally bought and kept the 8 1/2 D which is my normal size), but if you want the leather one to fit, size it down at least one size.

Great shoe - This review is for the all-leather version, without the yellow stripe. I wore the boots in the deep snow at Tahoe over the weekend, and my feet were perfectly warm and dry. The double EEs were wide enough for my WIDE feet, and the shoes are amazingly lightweight and they make my size 9.5 look delightfully small. They do run a little short, though -- other reviewers have noted that (in comparison to the yellow-stripe model). I would have re-ordered for a size 10, probably, but they were out of that size and I needed them for the weekend. So, my big toe was a bit snug, but not painfully so and I wore them for a couple three-mile hikes. On "balance" :) I'm very happy!

Awesome hiking shoes - I bought these just before a 14.2 mile hike, and they were great. Comfortable from the moment I put them on, to the moment I took them off.

Feels great - I've always had a hard time finding wide width shoes with good arch support for my high instep. Zappos.com made finding wide widths easy. My first choice was out of stock, so I took a chance on the New Balance WW977. I had already returned boots that were too narrow that I purchased on another website. I, as a rule, don't buy shoes online because my feet are hard to fit. Now that I live in Europe with my active duty Army husband, my shopping is limited to the small selection at the PX or the expensive local economy (the Euro is too strong against the dollar making exchanging currency a pricey proposition). A coworker suggested I try Zappos.com since she knew they deliver to APO addresses. Even overseas I received my shoes in under a week. The fit is perfect without needing any break-in time! My last shoes caused the sides of my feet to ache because they were just not wide enough. These are wonderful! They feel like they have springs in the soles. I'm definitely going to check with Zappos.com FIRST when I need to purchase shoes in the future!

Great Boot - Loved these from the moment I opened the box. No break in required, great for winter walking. I have walked in -20C and didn't have cold feet.

The best cold/wet-weather hiker for wide feet - After years of wearing (non-NB) hikers that either didn't fit and/or didn't keep my feet warm & dry, I was thrilled when NB finally produced a serious waterproof hiker in my size (7.5 2E). Almost my entire shoe wardrobe is NBs and these are consistent with the sizing and quality I've come to expect. The only nit is that my pinky toes get a bit irritated on the outside if I don't wear thick enough socks for a long walk.

New Balance WW977 Brown with Yellow Stripe. I love the WW977 in *the brown with yellow stripe*. In fact, I loved it so much that I have two pairs of them. They did fit perfectly from the moment I put them on. I wear them daily for my 5 mile walks...I put YakTrax on them and can go through just about any road condition. I also ordered the WW977GTX...***Whole Different Shoe***!!! Was tight and painful when I tried it on. I took out the insole that came with it and put in a flat Dr. Scholl’s. I wear a much lighter weight sock with it also. Probably should have just returned it for a half size larger and maybe a wider width. I ordered a 9 2A...which in the brown with yellow stripe was just perfect for the fit...and is the size I always order in New Balance. You can bet that the different style and material in the shoes make it different in fit. So I have two pair I love and one pair...the WW977GTX that I wear for trips to the store but not for walking long distances. Moral of story is ...just cause a shoe looks like another ...doesn't mean it will fit the same.

So grateful!! In preparation for my one month trip to the Peruvian Andes & Amazon jungle, I tried almost every pair of light hiking boots at an outdoor retailer - I even bought a couple and took them home & tried them for awhile, but not one pair felt good on my difficult feet. I have a wide foot with a steep arch and every other boot I tried made some part of my foot feel numb or sore. After reading the reviews on these boots I bought a pair without even a fit test first. They were by far the most comfortable shoe of all! I didn't even have much time to break them in before my trip & they were completely comfortable! I did a ton of hiking in the Andes Mountains and a lot of trekking through the muddy Amazon jungle. These shoes were great in all cases (and my feet were never wet). Normally my feet are my weakness when traveling - but this trip I did not once complain of tired or sore feet - really a MIRACLE for me!! I did use some orthotics inserts with these shoes.

Great hiking boots - Love these boots. I wish all of my shoes were as comfortable as these. The first time I put them on - I wore them all day. That is an absolute first! They have enough support but aren't rigid. The toe box is roomy enough and they are great boots.

Great Hiker! I was looking for a waterproof, lightweight shoe/boot that was more than a running shoe and less than a snow boot. This shoe looks good, fits great and is perfect for those times when the weather is messy or wet, but not quite snow boot weather. I like it a lot. It has a slightly high ankle, but not as high as a serious hiking boot, which gives support and protection without as much restriction. The upper of this shoe is made with Goretex, so it really has been waterproof. Because it's a New Balance, I knew it would fit well and accept my orthotics.

Great shoe/boot - I love this shoe. I needed something with great support for a trip I am taking in the spring where there will be lots of hiking. It is so comfortable that there won't be a need for a long break in period. I have a very wide foot and found this to be plenty wide enough.

New Balance's WW977 Women's wearing mid weight sock - Just FYI, I ordered The New Balance WW977 in the plain color without the yellow stripe since when doing this review the picture shown was the 977 with the yellow stripe and don't know if the two different colors would run diff in size. With this shoe being more for fall and winter wearing a mid-weight sock I consider this shoe to run one have size short or small in length but could be considered borderline and some may feel it true to size in length if you are sized just slightly under a women's 12.5 street shoe size. The width could be called wider than normal since I tend to slide to a wider width just past a B or medium width and the medium width was ok for me in this shoe. The shoe is made very well and is very comfortable somewhat like wearing an athletic shoe and not heavy. I don't know if I order the wider width if it would make a difference. I tried to see if a 13 wide was available just after receiving my order but they were out of stock in the size 13 wide. I don't know if I am going to wait to see if this shoe stocks or if not stocked in 13 wide I will have to return the shoe.

Great work/hiker/casual shoes. Very comfortable, good support, no break-in required. I usually like high top style hiking boots, so I was concerned about the support of this lower-topped hiker, but I love this shoe. It’s lightweight, fits like a glove, and looks great too. Thanks Zappos for your quick service.

If you have Tarsal Tunnel this shoe is for you. If you live with Tarsal Tunnel like I do this is the shoe for you. To give you and idea how bad my TT is, even crocs were painful to walk in. They are a perfect fit and just high enough to give proper ankle support. The rollbar keeps me form doing further nerve damage and keeps the weight off the Tarsal Tunnel area, so walking is a lot less painful. I would highly recommend this shoe to anyone who has Tarsal Tunnel or goes walking long distances, hiking, or for going to theme parks. The Gortex has a suede feel to it, making it a very attractive hiking shoe.

Love it! Great winter hiking shoe. Very supportive, good cushioning, waterproof and warm. Bought 1/2 size smaller than I need normally and I can still wear them with thick wool socks.

Wonderful Sierra Walking Shoe - Finding narrow shoes has always been a challenge for me. AAA heel as a young girl. This shoe came a half size shorter and I was amazed at how fast my replacement came. This shoe fits like a glove no breaking in was needed.

Happy Hiker - I bought these hikers specifically for a trip to wet Ireland. I wear orthotics and have difficult feet to fit into any kind of shoe. I spoke on line to one of the very knowledgeable agents and she suggested two New Balance styles. Ordered both and fell in love with everything about the WW977...but how would they perform on my trip? From the moment I put them on I was hooked. They were flexible and so comfortable that after walking a whole day, I would forget to take them off when we got to our home base....unheard of for me. They kept my feet dry even in bogs and tall pasture grass and were rugged enough to withstand being hooked by barbed wire. They were equally as comfortable on the streets of Dingle - trust a skeptic - these will NOT let you down.

New Balance WW977 - I got this boot and of course was very apprehensive... the size I order always brings me to a high anxiety state. I take a 9 2AA with a SL2 last in my normal walking shoes. This boot was perfect, fit exactly as my 816 New Balance does. I had 4 pair of the 816, so I loved that fit. I can wear the boot with a medium weight sock or heavy weight. The 977 more than meets my expectation. I have had plantar fasciitis and a heel spur that laid me up for months. That said... I always am so careful to buy a motion or stability shoe and New Balance is the only place that consistently has one that meets my needs. I love this boot! I walk 5 to 6 miles a day and it is a great day when I can go walk and I don't have to wince with foot pain. Goes to show one that it doesn't take much to give me joy... a great boot can do it all.

WW977 - I love this shoe. I've ordered about 12 pair of New Balance trying to find one that would comfortably accommodate my orthotics and finally, this is the one. It looks cooler than a regular, white tennis shoe. I have bad pronation problems and tennis shoes are all I can wear right now so I was looking for something a little more stylish looking than a regular tennis shoe. I have never wore a D width (always a B), but I ordered this in a D and it's perfect. At first I thought the shoe felt a little stiff, but I adjusted the laces and they're fine. Good support and they make my foot look a little smaller.

Great shoe - These were very comfortable right out of the box. They are a great lightweight hiking shoe that offers a nice cross between a tennis shoe and a hiking boot. I like it that they don't come up as high as a traditional hiking boot. The only negative thing I could say about them is that they could use more arch support. Orthodics inserts help.

Great shoe! While I agree with some others that the collar feels a little high at first, my feet had no problem adjusting to this after just a day or two. I like the extra room in the toebox and found the width (2A) true through the arch and heel. I love how lightweight these shoes are and I think they look great!

Great light hiker especially for Vacationers - This is a great shoe that requires no break in time, is water resistant, and has great traction on wet surfaces. It's not the prettiest shoe but at least you won't slip and slide. The sole has a noticeable forward roll which may feel unstable when you first try walking. I think it makes you walk faster. Adjusting to the "roll" took less than a day. If you need a reliable shoe for an adventure vacation/light hiking trip, or even something with good grip to do work outside on a rainy day, I think this is a great shoe. Sizing runs larger than the women’s NB 620 line.
