Odor - This shoe is great, except after couple of months of wear the sole of the shoe has a strong unpleasant odor. Never had a problem like that before.

I have owned two pairs of these. The leather upper was in perfect condition on the first - it was the footbed that wore out, and so I should have realized that they could be re-soled. Nonetheless, don't regret the second purchase at all. These are absolutely the most comfortable sandal I have ever owned. The sandal holds closely at the ankle, sole, and heel, but provides plenty of room and breathability around the toes and foot. The footbed is incredibly comfortable - form and supportive. They can be worn straight out of the box; I took my first pair on a month-long trip through sub-Saharan Africa right after purchase, wore them most days, and had no problems. I've taken them on trips as my only "shoe." They are fine on almost any surface. They are about as dressy as a sandal can be, meaning they can double with semi-dress clothes in many settings. At the same time, they are perfectly at home in a very casual setting. The buckle means that they hold to your feet well, but also requires a bit more work to put on and take off. This is more of a matter of the design of the sandal than a criticism, but if you’re looking for something to easily slip on or off, these aren't the best choice for you. They're also not designed to be worn in the water, meaning that a pair of flip-flops or Tevas will work better in water or on the beach.

I needed a sandal that provided good support while looking more refined than many others. I find this sandal provides excellent support, has a good sized toe box, is comfortable without socks (no chafing), and has sufficient sizing control with a buckle so can wear with and without socks comfortably. I feel it has a neutral stance, but seems somewhat longer than other makers, which I have found with all Mephistos. It looks good with both shorts and dressier pants, so is quite versatile.

Best shoe I have ever worn, and I am 58 - I already have one pair of these. I have worn them through trips to France and Italy, walk about 2 miles everyday and bicycle in them, have used them from late spring through early autumn. Good with or without sox. Feet stay dry, the sole provides fantastic support and a perfect stride. They look great with slacks, shorts or jeans.

Best sandals ever!! I am 70 and travel a lot. A comfortable pair of sandals is an essential. The Sam is it. They are turning out to be the most comfortable shoes I own. I wear them everywhere. VIVA MEPHISTO

Obviously a bit expensive, but I ended up buying two pair because I like them so much. The leather is very soft and has a quality feel to it, and the sole is very comfortable and shock absorbing. Sizing is true to size. Looks dressy too, or can be casual.

Great Sandal - Mephisto makes great shoes. So last year when I bought the Mephisto Sam (Tan) sandal I couldn't wait to purchase a Black pair.

I ordered these for my dad - when I asked him how many stars he would give them out of 5, he said he’d give them 6 :-) He said they’re very comfortable and I think they’re pretty attractive (as far as mandals go...). The only issue he had was size, we read that they ran large and ordered 2 sizes - my dad is normally a 10 and felt that the 42 fit best.

Great quality and design. Arch support is superior, but is tight around the foot. Fits more like a glove than a sandal.

I've had the opportunity to wear these sandals about a half dozen times. I don't need my orthotics. The leather feels soft and broken in from the start. No rubbing. A great selection and worth the hefty price. You can really live in these sandals. (Keep them buckled and use a shoehorn.)

Mephisto strikes again!! I just added these sandals to my collection of shoes...they are tré comfortable both at work and at play.

Mephisto Sam Sandals - I bought a pair of these in 1997. I am on my fifth pair of the most comfortable shoes I have ever worn (and they are indeed sandals). I wear them almost exclusively year-round until the snow is too deep.

Mephisto's Sam - My husband is in love with these sandals! They took no time to break in - were comfy from the moment he put them on.

"Investment" decision is a good one - Before buying these shoes, I read every single review (there were a LOT...99% positive). We can be added to that list. Big investment but well worth it. I didn't tell my husband the price, but he said it didn't matter. He really LOVES them. Zappo's was GREAT, as I needed them ASAP, and they were on our porch the next day!

Absolutely fantastic! I have wanted a pair of these for years, but ringed at the cost. I took the plunge and was greatly rewarded! These are some of the best sandals I have ever worn. They are beautiful and super comfortable, especially without socks. The width is perfect; roomier than most fisherman sandals. You can wear these for hours and forget you're wearing anything! They would be perfect for those places where sandals are not allowed. Put on a pair of matching socks, and you'd never know! I plan on getting a pair in brown as well. If you wear a 44 (11US) in Birkenstock, a 12US in Chaco, or an 11US in Teva, you will need a 45 (12US) in these.

Great Shoes for the warmer season - I love my Mephisto Sam. It really feels as well as my other Mephisto Shoes. Mephisto Sam is much nicer than my old Mephiosto Sandals I own. The feet are protected because of the extra leather. The heels feel sturdy. They are great without socks in the park for a longer walk. Since I am 72 I hate to expose my naked feet and toes. I like the comfort of the cooler feet without the embarrassment. Sams are great walking sandals!!! Arnold Rom

Lee's favorite - My husband, Lee, has been wearing his one pair of black sandals for years now. I only bought him new ones because he mentioned he would like a pair of brown ones. While his black sandals are old they still have much wear left. He has a very difficult time finding shoes to fit his foot comfortably. This has been his best shoe.

Walking Confortable - I own two pair of Sams. On burshed leather and one black leather. Excellent confort and shock disapation. It is interesting to note, that I ordered both pair in my regular size 11. They fit well out of the box and required no break-in. Thanks for a excellent sandal that can be worn casual or dress.

Felt great straight out of the box. No break-in time required. I concur with other reviewers that the sandal is one size larger than my normal size. This sandal is well crafted; there are no unfinished edges or seams which can chafe when worn without socks.

Wore this same Mephisto fisherman's sandal for years, served me well. Time to replace, ordered another pair but the construction changed. Strap across the top of foot is about 3/4" shorter, the holes are farther away from the tip, and the metal buckle is placed a bit lower on its tab, thus not enough strap length to buckle closed over my admittedly high foot. Very disappointing as this sandal in its previous format worked fine. Returning for refund.

Mephisto sandals were my favorite for years. Then, they stopped doing this design for women. I decided that I might try the men's sandal...YAY!! I wear a size 9, so I got a men's size 7. They're a little wider than the women's sandal was, but it's fine for me. They feel great.

My husband loves these sandals. Super light,super comfortable...like walking on pillows.
