I bought the charcoal in a size 8.5 (I am a 8.0-8.5 but due to my bunions, 8.5 in Fryes generally works for me). This sturdy boot looks awesome in charcoal with the subtle grey variations and it looks very cute with leggings, skirts and dresses. I've gotten compliments from strangers and friends on these boots.

My first pair of Frye boots and love them. Very comfortable. I'm not sure how to take care of them. I bought some of the weather proof dressing and tried it on a small portion. It seemed to change the color . It made it slightly darker. I bought the gaucho ones. I don't want the color to change, So I m reluctant to use this product. Any one else experience this?

These boots are well made and durable. They will always be in style. I usually wear between a 6.5 and 7 in Fryes. I got these in a 6.5. They need to break in so the first few times putting them on was a bit of a challenge. However, they would be sloppy big if I had gotten the larger size. Now that they've broken in, the 6.5 is perfect. These are extremely comfortable and versatile. Wear with leggings, jeans, skirts, or dresses. Wear to work or out on the town.

I searched high and low for a brown boot that I could just slip my foot into that was actually comfortable and I found it here. Very heavy and sturdy boot. Took a few wears to break in but now I love them!

Bought these for my 23 year old daughter for Christmas. What can I say, she loves them! She will probably wear them forever. And I must admit, they look cute on her.

Bought these babies a two years ago and I've been wearing them non stop since. Wonderful quality and style. I'm usually a size 6.5 but I got size 7 for these, because the leather is a bit harder than other shoes so it's a lot hard to break into them. Extremely happy with the purchase, THEY LOOK GOOD WITH EVERYTHING

I love these boots! I got them in charcoal and love that they are almost black. Super comfy right out of the box which is never the case for me. I get tons of compliments on these boots.

Love these boots! I have 3 pair black gaucho and red. They are true to size and made very well, you can't go wrong with Frye!

I purchased these in my usual size 7 in black after drooling over them for a year. They are so sharp looking that I was keeping them no matter what. I have a high instep and have had a broken right foot years ago which causes me problems getting them on, but once on they are fine, heavy to wear but you don't notice it. I don't wear heavy socks because I would be too hot but these are fine with light socks or even knee highs or tights. I've had them almost a year now and the good news is that every time I put them on it gets easier and they are possibly my most favorite boots, even above my other Frye's. Wished they made them in a destroyed stone grey.

After reading other reviews I ordered a half size larger. They fit perfect. Also, I like the wider toe. Much easier to break in. I wore them all day the first day and even made a trip to the mall.

I have owned a pair of free boots since the early eighty's and they are still beautiful. The styles, quality and construction can not be beat. Superb. I wish I could afford to buy only free shoes and boots. Great job free! You have a devoted fan.

I own four different pairs from Frye and my charcoal grey engineer 8r will always be my true love. They go with everything and once you break them in they are awesome. They feel indestructible and look awesome with leggings, jeans of all kinds, dresses - name it. I debated over size and went with my true 8.5 and so glad I did. They were hard to get on at first but once they broke in, they were a dream. Also debated over color and find that the charcoal is the perfect neutral. There are so many replicas out there, buy the original. Worth every penny. Thanks for being the best Frye, you have a customer for life.

I've had them before in brown, and couldn't wait to get another pair. They are wonderful, and so comfy (after the break in period, which sucks). My last pair lasted me about 5 years, which, knowing what I know now, will be twice as long for my new pair. Get them re heeled as often as needed! Don't wear them on 50 mile hikes (I know, I know), don't have them waterproofed, and don't wait too long to have the soles checked. These puppies are investments - your cobbler is your friend. The break in period is terrible though, so take it easy. I love how little they make my feet look! Especially without having to sacrifice comfort. I have wide feet but after the break in period these fit like a glove. Also everyone thinks I look tough.

I have the engineer 8'hight purchased 11 years ago and still love! I am getting ready to purchase the same (black) in 12 height. I have 4 pairs of frye and love them all! Size I feel true to size. Leather is stiff in beginning but once broke in " like butter":)

Love these boots! I've only had them for a few weeks, and I can tell they're going to take some time to really break in, but I'm also quite certain they'll last a long, long time if I care for them. As a Chicago native in the midst of a long, cold winter, I wanted some stylish boots with a low heel to wear to work with pants and dresses. These fit the bill perfectly - they look a bit "tough" and definitely hold up to the salt and ice, but in well-cared for black leather, they look high quality. They look cute with skinny pants (jeans or black pants), with bootcut pants / jeans, and with tights and dresses, which is exactly what I wanted. As a woman with very wide calves who has struggled with boots, I was pleasantly surprised to find these fit well, even with wool socks and my pants tucked in. The foot bed is a little tight / narrow, but not by much, and while it can take a little muscle to get the boots on / off, that just means I'm not slipping around in them while wearing them. I definitely recommend being prepared to break these in, and I'd recommend getting some spray / cream from Frye's to weatherproof them and care for them, but overall, they are a great, high quality and stylish pair of boots.

I'm ashamed to admit that I am a Frye boot junkie and how many pairs I actually have! In the Engineer 8r I own the gaucho, the black, the plum (these are particularly gorgeous!) but my absolute favorite is the burnt red, so much so that I saw a pair on sale recently and bought them for fear that when my first pair wears out, Frye might not make them in the red. I have at least 10 styles of Frye, but these are the most comfortable and the perfect shape for my foot. I have wide feet and narrow heels and ankles. I take size 9 in Campus and Carson. 9.5 in Veronica, Paige and Melissa, but all my engineers are 10, I like them roomy with mid weight socks, never have had a blister or rub sport. Very comfortable! The leather in the black and gaucho is very similar: more stiff and thicker leather. The plum takes a beautiful shine as does the red with Melton shoe cream, really dresses them up, I think the type of leather is the plum and red is a little thinner and more refined. I decided if we ever had a house fire, after saving the animals, I'd go back for my boots!!

Love these boots! I only have 1 complaint and it's that they are so heavy. I love the rugged look and classic style. I will have these forever.

I bought the dark brown first and loved them so much that I bought them in black. I wear them all the time and they still look brand new, even two years later.

So cute on! I was worried these boots would look too masculine, but they don't! They're really on trend and gaucho is a great color.

Best purchase ever. Great boots. A little hard to get on at first but they broke in over time. Great with jeans, skirts, dresses.

These shoes are so nice! Very rugged but still feminine. My right foot was much easier to get on that my left foot. The instep on my left boot was almost impossible to get on. It literally took me about 20 minutes to get on. But I was expecting that when I read the reviews for this shoe. I didn't give up because it fit so well on my right foot, that I knew once I got it on my left foot it would loosen eventually and be very comfortable. I would suggest to get the size you normally wear and take it to the cobbler to give it a good stretch on the instep. Other than that the boot is fabulous!

These are my new favorite boots. I have slightly narrow feet, but adding insoles and thick socks solved the problem of fit for me. If your feet aren't narrow, they should fit comfortably with room to wiggle your toes. These go well with everything from dresses to leggings to straight-leg jeans. I teach middle school, so I'm on my feet and moving around quite a bit and these boots are very comfortable with little break-in necessary. These are pretty much perfect boots.
