Altra Footwear

Altra Footwear Logo
Altra™ wasn't started in some corporate office, but in the back room of a Wasatch Mountain running store. The founders —elite athletes and retail managers— wanted a running shoe that encouraged running the way you were born to run. They noticed that the design of most athletic shoes hurt runners more than they helped. The elevated heel of the typical running shoe being sold promoted high-impact landings, and their narrow toe box design squeezed the toes out of their natural splayed position.

What began as experimental shoe alterations grew into what we know to be the Altra running company of today. Innovative from the get go, the brand is the only running footwear company to feature the cushioned Zero Drop™ platform and FootShape™ toe box technologies, which can be found integrated into every style across their entire footwear line. This combination of proprietary components encourages low-impact technique, and allows the feet and toes to remain in a natural, more relaxed position. The brand’s unique approach to creating running shoes has earned them multiple awards and a faithful fan following throughout the years.

From road to trail running, natural to maximum cushioning, Altra running shoes will change your perspective on what running comfort and performance can be.

Overall fit was true to size. Very comfortable shoe. I anticipated that it would take some adjusting to the flat sole, but only was a few steps until it felt natural.

I am SO DISAPPOINTED! I really wanted to like these shoes. The sizing is so off, I give up. I have Lone Peak 3.0 which I love, skipped the 3.5, tried the 4.0,,, my perfect size is 7.5. I remember someone mentioning the sizing was off, but I didn't believe them. I tried my 7.5, way too short, felt like a size 7. So, not to give up, I tried size 8, WAY TOO BIG! Seriously? All I wanted was for them to fit. How can the sizing be off that much? Anyway, give them a try and hope the sizing is right on, if so? You will love them.

This shoe sounded perfect -- roomy toe box but narrow heel and good arch support but not too much padding. But, once it came, like several other reviewers I thought it was a little tight in the mid-section and considered trying a size larger. I wasn't certain I would keep it, but it didn't take much walking around to get used to that snugness and I think if it weren't snug around the ankle it wouldn't be supportive. I like the shoe. I wish more manufacturers made shoes shaped more like actual feet.

I like Altra for the roomy toe box and this style is modern and the shoe comfortable. I usually take a 10 in their lace ups but it was too big so I exchanged for a 9.5 and it fits better.

OMG. My 67 year old size 12 M aching feet are very happy in these shoes. With a short, thin sport sock my feet like they are cradled all over firmly, but softly and I can even wiggle my toes without the tip of the shoe looking and feeling sloppy. Since I over pronate a great deal, I needed to add my Vionic 3/4 arch support insoles, but most people probably won't need them. the tongue is especially cushioning over my top of my foot that is very high. The lacing system is incredible it holds the each step during the lacing process. They are the most stable shoes I have ever worn and I will be very happy in them for walking and going to the gym. Altra really knows how to fit a woman's foot. (I'd love them in Navy blue and also White as well.)

I had originally gotten these boots in the purple gray color in size 9 which is my normal shoe size. I returned them and got the 9.5 in the green gray because the 9 were just a little too short for hiking. These shoes are weirdly shaped but in a good way. They have tons of room in the forefoot and are extremely comfortable but because of the large forefoot and my large shoe size they make my feet look huge. The 9 looked just acceptable but that extra half size up put my foot into Bigfoot territory and I just could not live with that look. I thought perhaps the brighter green color might have made a difference so I ordered the 9.5 in the purple with the hopes that the slightly more subdued color would make a difference. It did not. I’m returning both colors. Bummer because I love how these feel and if I could have gotten away with the half size smaller I would have kept them thank you Zappos for your wonderful return policy.

Very comfortable with good arch support. Unfortunately I will not be keeping them because they look huge on my feet. I’m only 5’3” and I wear a 9.5 in hiking shoes/boots so my feet are big to begin with. These, because of the very wide forefoot and odd shape just make me look like Bigfoot while wearing them. I tried these in the boot version in two colors to the same effect. I had hoped maybe the short version would look better but no, it did not. I’m really sorry to have to return these and the boots because they’re so comfortable but I just can’t wear them in public. Even my husband said they look awful on me. Thank you Zappos for your amazing return policy. I actually feel really bad because I ordered so many hiking shoes and I’m returning all of them for one reason or another. The search continues for a comfortable hiking shoe for me.

Let me tell you something about the Lone Peak 4s... The Lone Peaks have been getting better each year! I've owned the 3, 3.5 and now the 4's. They seem like they've perfected an already perfect shoe. The Lone Peak 4's has better traction. The tread is very aggressive than its predecessors. The compound feels grippier and feels great. I've worn the shoes on a very steep hike up Mt Baldy and it performed beautifully. The toe box is slightly wider than the 3.5. The 3.5 seemed little narrower but they fixed it with the 4. It feels closer to my 3. The materials are durable and could possibility withstand the all types of terrain. The color choices are OK. Overall great shoe!

I really like these shoes. I use these as my running shoes for my long runs. They do run a half size large compared to how Brooks and Nikes fit my feet but I knew this before I bought them based on other Altras I have bought in the past.

Okay so I ordered these in my usual shoe size 9 in the gray/purple color but found that my right foot, which is bigger than my left, was a little short and my toes touched slightly which would not work at all for hiking. So I ordered the 9 1/2 and decided to try the green/gray color. They fit better and are super comfortable but look HUGE on my feet. I’m hoping that the brighter color of the green has contributed to the big foot look so I’ve now ordered the same size in the purple again. These shoes are definitely wide in the toe area and that contributes to the big foot look and no matter what size foot you have they aren’t going to look like sleek shoes/boots. But they are so comfortable that I really hope the purple looks better on my foot in the larger size than the green did. I’m going to try to include a picture of the two colors together for people like me who can’t decide which color to get. Please note the purple are a half size smaller than the green. BTW, in either size they are difficult to get on and you ave to loosen all the laces to donn they’re boots. Kind of annoying. Actual colors are more accurate in the pictures where I’m standing.

After receiving these shoes, I felt I had to leave a review. I have, and have had, several pairs of Altra shoes. I really like the wide toe box, this is what attracted me to their shoes. These shoes are true to size. I wear a 11 1/2 size shoe, medium width. The width is true to size. These shoes do not have arch support insoles or inserts that support the arch. I like the style of this shoe as well as the color but disappointingly that is where it ends. I received these today, 6/13/2019, and I am returning them. They are not defective and Zappos makes it very easy to order shoes and for returns. I have never had a problem with Zappos, they provide excellent service. These shoes, for the price, feel inferior and feel like they are made of cheap materials, especially the inserts. I know some people want light shoes, particularly people who are runners, I get that. I am not an outdoor runner nor run to compete in any kind of competitions but if I were, these definitely would not be the shoes I would purchase for that purpose. I don't know how they could hold up very long with a long run or even putting them in the washer they feel like they would come apart too easily. I just don't feel the quality for the price. I expected much better than this from Altra. They use a lot of lingo and fancy words for their shoes to market them for sell but all that lingo means nothing if the materials of the shoe feel cheap. And really, how much does it cost to make these in China? One of the things that also is misleading to me is in the description for the support type. For these shoes it says the support type is neutral or underpronation. I am a underpronator, in other words, my feet have the tendency to lean to the outside and shoes always wear to the outside of the shoe. When I tried on these shoes they feel like they actually will cause the feet to lean to the outside, which goes against what I need. I need support to help prevent that from happening or at least slow it down. Perhaps I am misunderstanding what is meant by support type or for these shoes it may be a wrong description. I am deeply disappointed in these shoes and if this is the direction that Altra is going in, I may need to find a new brand. I don't want a cheap made shoe for a high price. Materials just don't match the price or the quality. They really do feel like they would break down very quickly. I have other Torins and they are the Torin 3. I have two pairs of those and they have held up well. They actually were cheaper in price and have a higher quality feel to them. I purchased those in April 2018. Not badly worn yet and have held up well with several washings. These Torin 4 Plush just don't have it. Sorry Altra, but don't put fancy words on a shoe and add the word Plush to it and make people think it's better so you can put a higher price on it, that's deception and not cool! Make quality shoes of quality materials and go back to what was working. I don't know what has happened or who is designing the shoes, but for me, the quality has gone down while the price has gone up, and that's not good!

This is my second pair of Torin 4's and my favorite of the 5 different Altra shoes I own. These look less like clown shoes than other Altra's and are just as comfortable. I bought the solid black with a turquoise sole and I love them. I wear a size 11 womens, so any shoe that makes my foot look smaller is a winner in my book. They have a lot of padding and even accommodate my moderate bunion on my left foot. I am on my feet all day for work, and these are the most comfortable shoes I own. Love, Love, Love my Torin 4's.

My third pair of zero drops. One pair is dedicated to indoor use. Have always bought one size, even though my right foot is a couple sizes smaller than left, secondary to childhood polio. Have actually managed to remove orthotics that I've used for ~ 11 years. Didn't find the transition to zero drops a problem; switched them out and didn't look back. I'm a walker. So many shoes "eat" my socks; these don't. Life is good when your dogs aren't barking!

Great cushioning in these. They are extremely comfortable on flat surfaces, but not great on trails that slant, which is most trails. Although I love a wide toe box, these are a bit too wide. When on trails, my toes slip. If some more support around the toe box was provided, maybe it wouldn't be as bad. I'll keep looking for a trail shoe but will keep these for pavement or if I know a trail will be flat.

I bought these for an upcoming trip where I will be doing some light hiking. These are amazingly comfortable though just about a half size too short on my bigger foot. I will be exchanging for a half size larger. They definitely have a very wide toe box, which isn’t the most attractive design and the bottom feels cushioned enough for my problem feet. There is moderate arch support. I wouldn’t have minded just a little bit more. As others have mentioned the biggest problem with these is that they are difficult to get on. They are made snug around the instep to prevent slipping I assume, but that makes them tough to donn. You have to loosen most of the laces a lot and even when you do it’s still not super easy to get on but I’m willing to put up with this inconvenience in order to have this comfort. Before I order my larger size I’m trying to decide if I want this waterproof version or if I should get the mesh version. Besides my hiking trip, I live in florida and I’m afraid these will be too hot. That being said we do get a lot of rain here so waterproof would be nice. Decisions, decisions.

I opened the box and I think I’ve found the love of my life!! So comfortable on my wide feet. I’ve had several surgeries to correct bunions that seemed to give me neuropathy so I’m very picky about shoes. They are a little odd looking because of the “natural shape” of the toe box but the cushion in this shoe is truly amazing. This shoe is not listed as a “wide” but it had a wide natural foot shaped toe box. Very comfortable. They will require a little adjustment for my feet but honestly I’ve never felt such great cushion. It’s like walking on firm marshmallows.
