Altra Footwear

Altra Footwear Logo
Altra™ wasn't started in some corporate office, but in the back room of a Wasatch Mountain running store. The founders —elite athletes and retail managers— wanted a running shoe that encouraged running the way you were born to run. They noticed that the design of most athletic shoes hurt runners more than they helped. The elevated heel of the typical running shoe being sold promoted high-impact landings, and their narrow toe box design squeezed the toes out of their natural splayed position.

What began as experimental shoe alterations grew into what we know to be the Altra running company of today. Innovative from the get go, the brand is the only running footwear company to feature the cushioned Zero Drop™ platform and FootShape™ toe box technologies, which can be found integrated into every style across their entire footwear line. This combination of proprietary components encourages low-impact technique, and allows the feet and toes to remain in a natural, more relaxed position. The brand’s unique approach to creating running shoes has earned them multiple awards and a faithful fan following throughout the years.

From road to trail running, natural to maximum cushioning, Altra running shoes will change your perspective on what running comfort and performance can be.

I have several pairs of Altra shoes. I love the wider toe box. Some might think they look a little dorky, but having great feeling feet is more important.

The Escalante is my new favorite shoe. Just enough cushion for long runs, with nothing to get in the way of the foot's natural motion. No arch support, no plates, etc. The outsole seems like it will be more durable than the Vanish-R, which is even lighter, but wears out quickly. If you like minimal or structure-less shoes with enough cushion for road marathons and beyond, this is the shoe.

Just like all Altras, these are great, and comfortable right out of the box. If you've never worn Altras or other zero drop shoes before, these will be a game-changer in terms of comfort, once you get used to the zero drop. If you have work Altras before, then you know what to expect - a neutral, comfortable shoe with a lot of room for your toes. As far as sizing is concerned, I bought these exclusively for backpacking (which requires extra room in front of the toes), so I went half a size up from my size with Altra running shoes. Overall great shoes for backpacking/hiking, but can't comment how they are for trail running.

I like the shoes because they are comfortable and the insole are a must to come out for me because I have my own insert. I think they are a bit pricey but otherwise they are good.

Okay, love, love, love these! EXCEPT, the right shoe has a knot where the tongue meets the rest of the shoe. It is SO UNCOMFORTABLE! Right shoe only, so I ordered another pair. Hopefully it won't have this defect. I SO WANT TO KEPE THESE!

This is my third pair of Altras over the last 3 years. I am not a runner, but I am a walker. I use my own inserts to correct my pronation, so it is a must that the liner can be removed. I love the wide toe box and find it cute in a duck - foot kind of way. This brand is the perfect one for me. I ordered 8 different pairs of Altras this time. Need to break in a pair for Disney. I ended up with Intuition 4.5. Order a half size larger or you will be sending them back!

I was so happy to find that this Lone Peak 4 has the same wide toe box of the Lone Peak 2.5 that was lacking in the Lone Peak 3. I put them on and they were instantly comfortable. I went back and ordered 2 more pairs in different colors.

After 6 months of near-daily wear, these are my absolute most favorite shoes. They were ridiculously uncomfortable during the break-in period of about 3-4 weeks, but once the back of the heel softened up, they started being the most comfortable shoes I own. I've been shocked that they don't cause the arthritis/hallux rigidus in one of my big toes to flare up at all, especially considering how flexible the sole is (I guess I can thank the giant toe box). I do not run in them, but routinely walk 5+ miles per day on paved trails and sidewalks.

The shape of the toe box was nit round enough to accommodate my second toe, which is linger than my big toe. Even going one full size up was not enough, and going larger would’ve left my foot swimming in the shoe. The shoe is shaped for feet with symmetrical toes - the bottom of the shoe has the foot outline that best fits the shoe. Look at it b4 you order.

I really like this shoe. It's very comfortable and my run time got instantly faster. I like the zero-drop. I transitioned to these from the New Balance Minimus, and these feel like I have mattresses strapped to my feet. My only problem is the toe-box is not properly aligned. It's skewed to the inside, which ends up smushing my pinky toe into my other toes. So, over the first several runs (7-13 miles each), I've ended up with blisters on my pinky toes.

I normally love Altra shoes with zero drop. These shoes seemed great but when worn for a long period of time these shoes did not feel the same as other Altras. The foam was too soft (my foot felt very unstable) and the shoe top was very thin. My feet started to experience pain during my activities and I didn’t feel secure in these shoes. Ended up returning.

I have capsulitis of the second metatarsal so I was looking for a shoe that had max cushion. I tried Books, NB, Hoka, Saucony and a few others. I then tried about 4 different Altra's. Seriously, I tried on at least 15 pairs of different shoes and probably drove Zappos nuts before I stuck with these. I do not have custom insoles, but I did add Altra rock guards for a tad bit more stability/cushion. These are by far the most comfy out of any of the shoes I tried. These also have the widest toe box out of any shoe I tried. I do not run in these, I use them everyday for walking and hitting the gym.

These shoes are marketed as a unisex running shoe but I would not recommend them for a man. We ordered them for our son who is just moving into adult men’s sizes. They were both too narrow and too small. The shoes actually have a tag on them saying that they are specifically designed for a woman’s foot.

I ordered these for my wife who likes to wear a lightweight shoe around the house, and has wider feet. I run in Altra shoes, and like the zero drop and light weight, so thought she might like these. The toe box and zero drop were to her liking, but there was a run on the lower rear part of her heel. So back they go.

I'm a 12 (usually) in women's shoes so call me surprised when the 11.5 men's did not fit. It wasn't that they were too short, more like they were made for another kind of foot. My arch never hit the arch in the shoe - there was room to add some filler in there yet they were too tight on the instep. No matter how I laced them up, or even left laces undone and loose, still hurt the top of my foot. Which is too bad cause the toe box is so roomy and comfortable. Also, they didn't help pronation at all and kind of made it worse. I truly thought these would work. I have ridiculous feet as I get older, baby bunions, hammertoe from childhood acting all snarky as I get older, metatarsals that annoy me if they are in shoes that are too spongy and heels spurs in remission (yay). I could go up to a men's 12 I guess but these already are adorable clown shoes - any larger and I'd run out of room to place my feet anywhere. Size 12 women's is bad enough, thanks. Sorry, Torin. I really wanted to like you - if you have a steep high instep, you might want to either size up or give these a pass.

Altra lost me as a long-standing customer when they resized their shoes. Nothing fits now. Toe box is shorter and more narrow. Just when I thought I'd found my answer....they go and change it!!

I initially ordered a half size larger than my usual given the comments in the review, but that was too small lengthwise. I then ordered a whole size up, and that was too small lengthwise as well. I was afraid going up yet another half size would leave my forefoot seimming in the toebox. Width-wise the shoes felt true to size each time. The issue I found related to the shape of my toes in relation to the shape of the toebox. My second toe is longer than the big toe, and the toebox is designed for feet that have toes that are symmetrical in the sense they get proportionally smaller from big toe to small toe. Actually, the bottom of the shoe has the profile of the foot which best fits the shoe. Otherwise the shoe seems well designed for powerlifting (zero drop sole) and Crossfit. It is not a running shoe by any stretch so don’t purchase it for that purpose or you will be disappointed.

I am enjoying wearing these shoes. I needed shoes with a removable insole (which these shoes have) so I could use my custom made orthotic. I can't speak to the arch support they come with as I use my own arch insert. These shoes have a wide and soft top toe area which is perfect for a person with hammer toes. There is room for your toes to spread out. The shoes are light weight which I like.

I haven't worn these shoes yet on a long walk...but my first impressions are that I might have found the one perfect shoe for my foot. It seems to fit my foot perfectly and it offers plenty of room in the toe box. This shoe looks great and feels as good as it looks. I'm ecstatic!
