Altra Footwear

Altra Footwear Logo
Altra™ wasn't started in some corporate office, but in the back room of a Wasatch Mountain running store. The founders —elite athletes and retail managers— wanted a running shoe that encouraged running the way you were born to run. They noticed that the design of most athletic shoes hurt runners more than they helped. The elevated heel of the typical running shoe being sold promoted high-impact landings, and their narrow toe box design squeezed the toes out of their natural splayed position.

What began as experimental shoe alterations grew into what we know to be the Altra running company of today. Innovative from the get go, the brand is the only running footwear company to feature the cushioned Zero Drop™ platform and FootShape™ toe box technologies, which can be found integrated into every style across their entire footwear line. This combination of proprietary components encourages low-impact technique, and allows the feet and toes to remain in a natural, more relaxed position. The brand’s unique approach to creating running shoes has earned them multiple awards and a faithful fan following throughout the years.

From road to trail running, natural to maximum cushioning, Altra running shoes will change your perspective on what running comfort and performance can be.

Love the shoe EXCEPT for the sole design. After only using the shoes at the gym twice the sole has started to peal away from the shoe. The sole is actually constructed in 3 different pieces which creates several potential stress points. Great shoes just NOT meant for a lot of lateral motion...

The elastic around the ankle was too tight for my sturdy ankles. If you have slender ankles they would be great.

The last pair of Escalantes I got were a size 10. Zappos recommended size was a 10.5. I ordered both, and the Zappos recommended size was correct. They fit well, but it's tight across the top of my foot, right around the eyelets closest to the toes. I'm a decent seamstress, so I'm going to try to put a dart in there to see if that will loosen up the fit a little bit. Love the style for summer.

When I take out insoles that come with the shoes and replace with my custom orthotics, the shoes squeak with every step. Loudly! Returning. I am disappointed.

I really liked these shoes initially. I am a supernator so I needed a shoe to help that and reviews said this shoe was great for that. I did love the deep heel, it really stretches your calf but the shoe isn't very supportive and it rolled my foot too much causing a lot of ankle, foot and toe issues. After a month of wearing them, my doctor said to find a more supportive shoe with firmer foot bed.

I was referred to the Altra Lone Peak by a customer service representative in footwear at REI. I am looking to replace my Hoka One One Tor Summit Mids to no avail. I need the mid height as I have stress fractures I need to protect and the comfort, padding, and support of the Tor Summit foot bed due to Dupuytren's. The foot bed on the Altra is very comfortable with an extra-wide toe box and extra support in the heel, which stabilized the heel and prevented slippage. I wear a size 6.5; however, after reading feedback, I bumped up to a size 7 - my toes were still squished at the top - so I ordered in a 7.5. Although my toes were not rubbing the top, the entire top of the toe box had an inordinate amount of material remaining, and as I stepped, they bubbled and creased in odd ways. Although the heel felt stable, with so much extra area in the toe-box with no barrier, I slipped forward squishing toes again on a down slope. Also, I noted an area in the back, bottom of the heel that appeared to be peeling. It is actually velcro, and I realized it was a gaiter anchor for a strap to accommodate over the ankle gaiters sold separately. I have a feeling this velcro would be flapping in the breeze as I am a bit rough on my shoes in rocky areas. Overall, a very comfortable shoe, but not for me. I miss my Hoka One One Tor Summit Mids!

The foot bed on the Altra is very comfortable with an extra-wide toe box and extra support in the heel, which stabilized the heel and had no slippage. They are difficult to get into without unlacing quite a distance. I definitely prefer the Mesh version of this shoe as opposed to the material used in the RSM. Unfortunately, I had to immediately return for a larger size. I generally wear size 6.5, but I went with a 7 due to feedback stating they run small. My toes were still squeezed into the top. Next up, 7.5!

While wearing, they bent and warped in odd ways on the top of the toe box area. I am not certain how durable these would ultimately be. For comfort, I am willing to replace more often. Unfortunately, I had to immediately return for a larger size. I generally wear size 6.5, but I went with a 7 due to feedback stating they run small. My toes were still squeezed into the top. I am a 74 yo hiker & ordered these after rejecting trail runners by HOKA and other brands. My foot is wide at the toes and narrow at the heels, plus I have an arthritic big toe joint, so I am fussy about my shoes' fit. These fit perfectly. I liked the short lacing loops, the tongue and the laces themselves. They were comfortable on an all-day hike in the White Mountains and held onto the rock there until I slipped on a wet slab on my way down. They absolutely flew out from under me. A reviewer mentioned that she had trouble with slipping on wet surfaces and I can support that. These are different shoes when wet. I have to say that I tried to find a good-fitting trail runner with Vibram soles, but could not, so I am sticking with these - and a good pair of hiking poles - until someone makes a lightweight hiker with Vibram. Otherwise, perfect!

I have been running in the 1.5 Escalante for 2-3 years and love them. The 2.0 version is stiff, little to no cushion and much narrower in the toe box. Altra is known for the wide, foot shaped toe box. They have changed that. I hate to switch brands but I have tried several different models, in several different sizes and none work for me.

I purchased these shoes to accommodate my orthotics and have been lightly wearing them since December. And for awhile, they were great. Over the past two months, however, they have utterly fallen apart. Even the sole started to come off. I've put other shoes through a lot worse for longer periods of time and they have held up better.

Tushar Boot

Close but no potatoe! I am a somewaht overweight 55 year old with age and exertion related "itis" issues but still moving albiet not very gracefully! The conformation of my feet and ankles is extremely normal! Suffering from bruised toes on moderate hikes I have begun the aged 55 hunt for hiking shoes (as opposed to age 50, 45, 40 and all). These boots are so close! Pros. Plenty of room in the toe box for my longer toes and anathema of pressure around my forefoot. Excellent lacing including a speed hook that nicely straps the heel down eliminating the need for any fancy lacing. This same speed hook Beautifully secures the heel without the need to lace the heel in oppressively tight which is another pressure anathema to my feet. A third hurrah for that effortless snug heel, feels like the bruised toe issue would be resolved. Other pros include a comfortable footbed and not too stiff nor too soft sole. Cons. One con, it's fatal and another reviewer returned their Tushars for the same reason I am going to return my pair. At the leading edge of where the tongue folds, a bump is created by the folds plus sewing. This bump rubs against my ankle bone severely enough, even with adequate hiking socks that I'm not even going to try the Zappos 30 day "Runlimited" trial. While a different shaped lower leg and foot might not have this issue, it's a deal breaker for me. Darn, darn, darn! Altra, take note! You are on to something here. A couple of tweaks and I'm a buyer!

I own 5 pairs of Altra Timp 1.5's. All are a size 10.5 and all were perfect out of the box. The 1.5's have been upgraded to 2.0. I'm not sure why but everytime a company "UPGRADES" it seems to be a downgrade. And these Altras are no different. The width is way too tight! Bear in mind these are a WIDE TOE BOX! The length is okay but feels a bit tight. Unfortunately I'll need to return these and try a larger size. Very disappointed in Altra.

I love my Lone Peak 4s and really wanted to like these, but my left foot was immediately uncomfortable in the shoe. Right shoe fit like a glove but the left shoe felt like it was compressing the ball of my foot toward the pinky toe. No amount of playing with the laces would get it to loosen up, which is disappointing since Altra is all about the wide toe box and foot-forward design. The style was nice, too.

These are the best running shoes I have tried in a long time! I run more so on my toes than on my heels, so the zero drop is perfect, but they also have some cushion I like other zero drop sneakers. I got the burgundy color. I think these are better looking than most other zero drop sneakers as well. I’ve gone on a few runs and walks so far and they are great right out of the box!

Fit was absolutely perfect right out of the box. Made the switch from my trusty Brookes Cascadia 13’s and am happy I did. Probably wouldn’t have made the change, but the new Cascadia iterations aren’t as good as previous models. Wore an 11 wide in the Cascadia’s, and went with an 11 in the Lone Peak’s. The wide toe box of the Lone Peak’s negates the need for a wider shoe as there is plenty of room for my feet even after they get swollen from serious mileage. Time will tell if they hold up as well as the Cascadia’s, but I’m confident they will! Also love that the Lone Peak’s accommodate my Dirty Girl gaiters!!!

I loathe to call these "budget" but these perform better than kicks costing $30, $40 or even $50 more. I had never heard of this brand and usually sport On, inov8 or Topo but these kicks may have just moved to the to top of the list.

Too flimsy with not enough support for midfoot motion control. Felt like the sole was very thin. Over corrected for pronation so much for me I was walking on the outsides of my feet. Did have a big toe box, kind of like a keen shoe. Did have a true fit. Just not the right sole thickness or orientation for me, maybe good for someone else. Never know if you don't try. Will be exchanging and trying another shoe.

Regardless of how they fit I had to give them one star: I only wore them 4 times—for 30 min walks—and the sole began to tear loose. I could pull the toe back, the sole wasn’t attached to the shoe anymore. They went back and I exchanged them for the Hoka One One Bondi 6. The Altras had a nice wide toe box but obviously I wasn’t going to keep them once they came apart. As always Zappos was great with the return and the exchange for the Hokas.

I bought a pair of Altra Olympus shoes a while back. I have worn them out and keep wearing them for mowing and when I paint. These shoes were a perfect fit for me. They feel true to size with a generous foot shape toe box. I require a little more arch support so I put my arch support in them. My feet do not feel tight or like they are bound in any way. I was told these shoes are purchased by doctors and nurses because of their comfort. I can see why. I used them for my runs, long and short distance, and never had any kind of problems out of them. I am ready for another pair.

I’ve tried nearly every Altra shoe at this point. (Used to like the Escalante but not anymore). I’m currently trying out the Torin 4.5 as well. So far I can say I like the grip on the sole of the Timps even though I don’t use them for trail running. However, the Torin is “cushier.” Since I have PF that can be a crucial point. I wear them to walk the dog a couple miles every morning so I don’t know how they’d be for a run.

I really love these shoes. I have a tailor’s bunion and even Hoka One Ones started to hurt after a mile or so. The stability factor in these is great. My only complaint is that they do not last very long. I had my last ones for about two and a half months before they were totally worn down, causing my knee and back to hurt. Altra! I love your shoes, but please make them more durable.
