Altra Footwear

Altra Footwear Logo
Altra™ wasn't started in some corporate office, but in the back room of a Wasatch Mountain running store. The founders —elite athletes and retail managers— wanted a running shoe that encouraged running the way you were born to run. They noticed that the design of most athletic shoes hurt runners more than they helped. The elevated heel of the typical running shoe being sold promoted high-impact landings, and their narrow toe box design squeezed the toes out of their natural splayed position.

What began as experimental shoe alterations grew into what we know to be the Altra running company of today. Innovative from the get go, the brand is the only running footwear company to feature the cushioned Zero Drop™ platform and FootShape™ toe box technologies, which can be found integrated into every style across their entire footwear line. This combination of proprietary components encourages low-impact technique, and allows the feet and toes to remain in a natural, more relaxed position. The brand’s unique approach to creating running shoes has earned them multiple awards and a faithful fan following throughout the years.

From road to trail running, natural to maximum cushioning, Altra running shoes will change your perspective on what running comfort and performance can be.

I have tried out my new Altra Escalante 1.5 for a few weeks and like how they feel. I wear between size 9 & 9.5. I tried both and the 9.5 feels great (size 9 was tight). I do like the wider toe box, though one does have to get use to a slightly different "look", perhaps not as "cool" as my old Nikes, but they feel better for my feet. I have painful bunions and with this shoe I do not feel the usual pressure/pain. As I age I am needing more sole padding and this shoe seems to be providing plenty. At first it did seem narrow and a little tight in the mid-arch area of foot, but I am not noticing that now. So far so good, and that's saying a lot for my touchy feet!

I’m a huge fan of altra trail shoes and this is probably my seventh pair. I love some of the design upgrades of the lone peak 4. I’ve always liked the tread, but they always seemed to wear very quickly. Maybe just because of the desert rocks chewing it up. The new tread on the 4 seems to be more durable. Anyways. I have always ordered size 14. These definitely feel longer. However, they still feel great on my first couple of runs. My second toe is actually about 1/2” longer than my big toe so this might be a welcome change.

These shoes are just the ticket!! I love the zero drop, the cushion, the lugs and the toe box. Finally my toes have room to splay naturally. No more cramped toes and black toe nails from narrow toe boxes. I'm a female and went with the men's line because at this time Altra doesn't offer my size (11.5, 44 EU). I'm very happy with the men's style and colors and I'm super happy the tongue is long and cushioned for comfort. The width is a tad large for my feet and it feels like the heel of the shoe comes up a tad too high but other than that, I'm totally happy! I didn't wear the original Timp but I've heard this version has more cushion and yes!!! It does have a great amount of cushion! I like that it almost feels like a stability shoe but it's still a neutral shoe to keep us safe on those trails. Thanks Altra and thank you Zappos!!

After two snowy trails runs in DC's Rock Creek Park with my dog I can officially say these are fantastic trail shoes. Didn't slip once even with the dog pulling me and I love the zero drop. The fit was true to size with my other Altra road shoes. If i had a minor quibble I wish they were more water resistant.

This is probably my 6th pair of Torins and the new knit design is a really nice improvement. They fit very soft around around my ankle. Torins wear really well. For me, they usually last 4-6 months, depending on how much I am running and then I continue to use them as walking shoes. I wear a 10.5 street shoe, 11 in most running shoes and a full size up from that in Torins, 11.5. Great shoes.

When Altra first made the Provision sneakers (then called the Provisioness), the toe box was nice and wide, with room for one's toes to spread out. Now, the women's version of the sneakers are way too narrow. I'm very disappointed.

Tongue is a little flimsy. Toe box is huge and takes some getting use to. But once you do it feels great. I usually wear a 12 and it fits perfectly. Laces untie easily. That’s my only real complaint.

These were far too narrow. What ever happened to the Altra sneakers of long ago, that actually had a wide toe box? Forget these if you're looking for a wide toe box.

This is my first experience with a zero-drop platform. I had polio as a child, resulting in one foot being a full size larger than the other--quite the challenge. I've always bought the larger size, as I did with this shoe. I also wear Step-Ahead orthotics for arch supports, so I remove the inserts. My go-to brand has been New Balance because of their roomy toe boxes. My son suggested I try Altra, and told me to kind of "break them in" because of the zero-drop platform. I'm up to wearing them all day and am very happy with this shoe. I tried another Altra style, but a seam in the toe box was irritating. The only issue I have--and it's a personal one--is that the shoe "eats" certain socks on my smaller foot, so I'll have to experiment on a sock style that works for me. I'm going to wait for a few weeks to be sure, but I anticipate getting a second pair. Thanks to Zappos, my family's shoe source, for allowing us to try on shoes at home with no mailing expenses!

My feet measure 121/2’’ but wear a 13’’. Ordered a 13’’ but certain toes on right foot hit the front just standing. Would try a 13 1/2 if available but looks like a 14’’ will have to do.

If you're a person who "over-pronates", you wear out your shoes on the inside of your foot rather than the back (neutral pronation) or the outside of your foot (under-pronation) these are the shoes for you. I'm fairly neutral, so I noticed right away that these wouldn't be good for me. They're REALLY comfortable though, so I'm going to look for a different Altra shoe. There's room for your toes! And the Zero Drop feels wonderful!

I love the wide toe-box, if you're not used to it - beware, the shoes may feel overly wide, they're not. They're comfortable for lifting and Met/Con's; I don't like running long distances in them, but short sprints are just fine. Truthfully, I don't like running long distances at all. :-D I have Nike Metcons (gave me shin-splints) and Reebok Nanos (very narrow) and I prefer these all day.

I bought 2 pairs, one size 9.5 and one size 10. My actual size is 9.5. Strangely, both sizes fit me OK so I would say they run slightly small, but the toe box is wide and roomy enough in both sizes. I have hallux rigidis in both feet and according to the internet research I did on shoes suitable for this condition, I bought Altras due to the zero drop feature. Very pleased that they do not exacerbate the pain in my large toe joint and I believe this is because the zero drop prevents impact on and bending back of the large toes/front of feet. I don't think these are really "hiking boots" but are best worn as trail running shoes or day hikers for short less challenging hikes. They are stylish enough to wear for casual everyday purposes as well. Bought these in the winter so I do not know how they will feel in the summer yet.

I absolutely love these shoes and am sold on the zero drop insole. I run a combination of trails and service roads in all seasons anywhere from 3-6 miles. This is my first pair of Altra running shoes and I had very little break in time in terms of getting used to the zero drop. My feet have stayed warm and dry so far and since I am currently running in sub-freezing weather I have not had any problems with sweating. I wear them with smartwool mid-crew height running socks and they've been great even in 18 degree weather. Hopefully they will hold up well and make them worth the cost. I am an 8.5 in regular shoes and the 9 was perfect for me with the necessary additional room in the toe required for running.

I have wide large feet. These are hands down the most comfortable shoes I have ever purchased. I'm on my feet sometimes greater than 12 hrs per day in a hospital. The reason I am giving them 3 stars is because the green outersole (i.e. bottom of shoe) peeled off from the tan part with minimal use after just a few months. See pictures below. The other problem is the lace design. The tips of the laces are capped with a heavier than normal, hard plastic. These tips of the laces whip around with momentum and untie more frequently/faster than average. On top of that you can't kick (e.g a kickboxing bag) because the hard plastic will be between your foot and the bag, and it will hurt your foot. I really mean it when these are otherwise the most comfortable shoes I have ever worn. I will purchase another pair, same company, different style.

I love Altras. After a long walk, no pain. The wide toe box is incredibly comfortable. No more suffocated feet. The only problem is that the inside of the heel frays and the rest of the shoe remains just fine. I solved that by ordering a heel slip protector to insert.

I ordered my usual size 11.5. The length was correct -- no need to order a size larger. However, the heel slips badly. The heel is too wide, although the mid foot is somewhat narrow, as other people have mentioned. Altra needs to make a design change too hold foots heel in better. Also, the shoe is almost too stiff. The stiffness of the shoe probably contributes to heel slipping.

These shoes offer a lot of extra volume which is great if you want to add your own support. It feels like the shoes may be a half size larger. Maybe having a natural toe box instead of a toe box that narrows means you can go down half a size. I wish companies would make a size 11.5 so I could test this theory out. An 11 would be too small and a 12 is too big. I might try the men's line to test out the length theory but usually men's shoes are too wide for my feet. Overall, good shoe and consider ordering a half size smaller.
