Suunto Reviews
I did not buy this watch, thankfully. Researching the item, I found a couple of interesting paradoxes. First, the a priori statement: this is an extreme conditions watch. Ok, so let us look at some empirical scenarios (which, ironically, are not so extreme). I called the manufacturer and asked, if I am backpacking and decide to take a dip in the river, this wrist computer is ok, right? Nope. According to them, I absolutely have to take this thing off as it is not designed for swimming. Although it is water resistant to 100 feet, you cannot swim with it on because it will leak. In a pool, according to one review. It is water resistant to 100 feet. 100 feet of what? Often, structural and mechanical elements exposed to pressure have some time increment associated as well, EG 100' for 10 minutes. Nope, none of that. Fluff spec, period. I was told it was for rain exposure. 100' of rain. Secondly, the altimeter. Some guy reviewed this elsewhere and said he calibrated it and checked against actual altitude markers and it was off by a couple hundred feet. Another guy said his temperature gauge read the same temp all the time - body temp. This watch is what the old timers call hooey. Charlatan. Joke. Here is what the guys who wrote the original boy scout manual used: the sun and the stars. Go ahead, buy this watch and look cool like Mark Walberg when he wore it as a a now obvious prop in Shooter. In the end I replaced my cheap Casio with another cheap Casio. The first went into every pool, stream, and lake over the last five years until I broke the strap and smashed the face. Oh, and both are water resistant to 200'.
A great looking and interesting watch. Understated but different and catches your eye. My only complaint is that after less than a year of wear, a line of vertical LED lights has failed so the numbers don't display correctly. Makes it virtually unusable. Contacted Zappos CS to see what can be done but a little disappointed in the quality given how much we paid for it.
Great watch. If you read the manual and spend the time to understand the functionality of the watch, you will appreciate how well it is designed. You do have to occasionally re-calibrate the compass altimeter, but that is very simple to do.
Overall very pleased with this watch. Great looking and durable. This is the 2nd Suunto I have owned. Not a 5-star because comfort could be improved. The back of the watch is hard and not contoured, whereas the Suunto M-series watches are more form-fittting. As a result, my wrist bone feels some pressure from the watch at times. Not a deal breaker for me - I wear the watch almost every day. And it may just be my wrist. I purchased the green bezel watch with the lighter watch face background. Very easy to read and functions well. Pleased with purchase.
This watch is the real deal and then some. I've purchased and returned several watches with similar functions (not all together as Suunto has them) and wasn't nearly as impressed as I am with the Ambit. The GPS is incredibly accurate and takes no more than 4 or 5 seconds to acquire a signal. The first time it may take up to several minutes, but it took no more than 15 seconds for me. The heart rate and customizable screens / exercise programs are great. Incredibly easy to use and intuitive for the average person to avid athlete to use. I tend to run on the treadmill occasionally when the weather isn't great and the distance, pace, and speed is incredibly accurate. Running outside with GPS on only makes it that much better. It's expensive, but definitely worth the money. It's a great motivator, tool and resource to have even if you're the average gym user.
I was pretty happy with my watch until a month ago when the lower left button that changes the view screens stopped responding when pressed. I have used the watch pretty lightly considering its purpose as a specialized outdoors watch. I called Suunto to send it in under their two year warranty and they directed me to their website. Apparently you cannot send the watch through Fedex originating from your house, or receive delivery, without being charged each way. I find this to be pretty poor after-purchase service considering the price of the watch. I would not be able to recommend this watch due to Suunto's customer service.
Just got this. So far, love this watch. Big read-out, nice back light, so far very easy to use. My one complaint - first, you open the box and it looks great, exciting! I am just getting back to exercising after 2 kids. It asks you to set the time, date, etc. Okay, great. Asks you to enter your stats - weight, height, age and estimated fitness level. Now my complaint - it calculates your BMI and hits you, Boom, "overweight." Well, that's why I got the darn thing I guess, but a little more gently please? I was expecting it to flash "you're old too" next, but luckily Suunto spared me that pain. All in good fun, but this is seriously a really great looking watch. Let's see if it makes me walk faster (and hopefully, eventually get back to running). I will try to update this later after I take it out on the road.
I finally decided it was time to throw out my old, worn out Polar heart rate monitor and graduate from the Nike+ app I was using with my iPod to something a little more updated and integrated, so I decided to go with the Suunto M5 Running Pack. Overall, I am pretty satisfied with it, and it does everything I need it to. I am not a serious runner, but I do cover a good amount of mileage, mostly on trails, and I like to monitor my heart rate during workouts. The heart rate strap is comfy and it doesn't slip, and the running pod is super easy to switch around from shoe to shoe. I also really like the ability to sync my workouts to the website, and how easy it is to transfer data from the watch to the computer. I only have a couple minor complaints: I hate how the watch menus are set up, and I'm not crazy about some of the stats views during the workouts (there are just so many that I don't use). The menu is not very intuitive, and I still find myself getting frustrated with it even after having used it almost daily now for the last few months. All in all, I am glad I purchased it - it's a big step over what I was using before, and I don't feel like I am missing out on any necessary features.
Pros: It is a good looking watch, water proof. The flexibility that this watch has with setting up the different screens for different sports is great! Seems to get GPS signal quickly. Great battery life Cons: No Auto pause. It creats a new lap every time it is manually paused. Lap pace seems to jump around quite a bit. Also, I did not like the Movescount website that Suunto uses to keep track of your uploaded runs. Quite a few of the stats are kept in MPH instead of minutes per mile and you cant change that. The reporting on movescount is not as good as some of the other running websites.
This watch has superb design, but that is about it! Here are the issues I found with it: 1) the screen has very low contrast, i.e. readability 2) you can read the screen ONLY if right in front of your face, otherwise is unreadable. 3) backlight is too faint, only useful in the dark, dark. 4) the menu navigation is inconvenient. there are two functions, altimeter and barometer, that are unnecessarily together AND additional settings must be changed to select one or the other instead of using the MODE button
Great sports watch. As with all heart rate monitors, keeping contract with real time heart rate measurements gets a little tricky after 45+ minutes of exercise (i.e. sweat), but the display is great, and easy to use. The exercise summary could be better by allowing you to see a daily total though - exercise more than once in a day and you can only review the last event.
This is a great watch but even with adjusting the contrast, it is extremely difficult to read. If the display was brighter, I would rate it very high!
I bought this watch for my husband and he really likes it except the loop that you put the end of the band back through. The band will not stay in the loop. He is going to order a different band.
I bought this watch for my son for Father's Day...and he loves it! He called to thank me for it and went on and on about all of the things that it could do. Perfect personal gift for a new dad.
Fantastic gadget. Light, bright, multi-functional and the GPS capability is truly exceptional. The Heart rate belt is better than my previous polar strap and no more "watering" prior to use. The software is quick and the fusion speed is more accurate than conventional averages by GPS. I don't need to open the carcass anymore to change the battery. You just plug it in and you're done! Fantastic. Log on to the site and track, customize and communicate your training with others. A new life on the wrist of your hand. Could be a bit less on the price tag but this is a piece of technology far beyond the average training wrist watch.
I bought this to replace the Garmin ANT USB stick that I lost. This one is cheaper, and way smaller than the replacement Garmin product. It works seamlessly, and the best part is that it's small enough you can just leave it plugged in to your laptop and it will automatically sync anytime the watch is nearby. I have a Garmin Forerunner 405, but I'm sure it would work with any of the Garmin products.
Bought this watch for my husband, as he had been looking for a neat sports watch (something a little different than your average one). He loved it! He's a Clemson Tigers fan, so he really liked the orange. He said it's really easy to use and that all of the features are great for his workouts.
Features are awesome and the look is great. If you need a watch to be water resistant...find another one. This one can't make it thought a shower working. If I didn't like it so much, I would return it.

Love this monitor. It's easy to use, accurate, and the strap is comfy. Much better than my Polar because it's so much more user friendly.
I've been very happy with this watch as a HR monitor. Easy to use (the instructions that come with it are not much help but the online guide was good) and the chest strap is comfortable. The watch strap works but is a little small for a man's wrist. I also wish it had a back light as the display is a little hard to read in low light conditions and impossible to read at night. For the price I'm very happy with it, though again, i only use it a HR monitor. I would not use this as an everyday watch.
