I'm wonderfully surprised by these - the soles are flexible and soft, with some traction, and the leather is so soft - I had no idea that patent could be like this. The leather liner is super soft too, like high end gloves. Even with all the comfort, they don't look like comfort shoes. I think they look better in person than in the photos (I got the black ones). A good mix of functional, preppy/classic, and a bit of edge in the patent. They run very big and they are probably a C width - I'm normally a US 6.5-7, wide, and Eurpoean 37, so I got these in a UK 4. As I use insoles, the extra space is okay but I still needed heel grips even with socks. The next pair I'll get in the UK 3.5. - and I'll be getting another pair! But you should definitely size down.

I love these shoes--I've bought them twice now. They're cute and I get a lot of compliments on them, they're comfortable, and they're really durable. I have weird, incredibly flat feet, and not a lot of shoes work for me, but these do. They're expensive. There aren't a lot of shoes I'm willing to pay this much for, but I will for these.

Love these shoes. Please make them in every color. I cannot stand to wear uncomfortable tight shoes all day or be forced to change shoes in the middle of the day because my feet hurt. This is the perfect all day shoe, dress it up or down and you can walk all over in it.

I am buying a second pair for this season...also have them in brown. I get compliments all the time! Love these shoes!

Very comfortable shoes: good support, flexible sole, true to size. The color is just enough, but not too bright. Cute with jeans. Comfort shoes that look fashionable.

I really wanted these shoes to fit; however, they were too narrow for my wide foot. Even ordered a size up. Too bad -- these shoes were the perfect look that I wanted.

Despite the reviews of the shoe being very comfortable and true to size I found this shoe narrow in the toe box, even with stockings on. I'm a 7-7.5 and got the 7.5. I've always been a M, never a W. Love the shoe, wish it fit.

Very comfy and versatile too. Just what I needed. I bought these to wear at a tradeshow, where I knew I would be on my feet for over 12 hours for many days. It was risky, but they were great - zero breaking in needed. They looked great with slacks and suits and even jeans in the evenings (rolled up with no socks, to change the look from business suits during the day). I wanted something that was comfortable but not frumpy. I own a jillion black loafers, but these are definitely a scaled-up version. One caveat: There is really no arch support (very flat).

This is my second pair of ARA loafers in this style, purchased a year apart in different colors. They are so comfortable. I walked all over Rome in them over a course of 6 days, that's how comfortable they are. I get a lot of compliments on them, particularly the grey color.

Superb - I tried these in burgundy which is priced lower than the other colors. Pretty! I've never tried this brand before. The quality seems superb. They are very cushy inside. The leather even seems stretchy. The heel has a lot of traction. The color is beautiful. I was going to keep them until I noticed a piece of foam that had been inserted in the front around the upper portion for packaging was still in both shoes! Without those they were roomier and I didn't want to have to wear socks with them. I should have noticed they looked a bit wide in front.

Versatile, Comfortable, Attractive Shoe - My Ara Portland’s are so comfy, straight out of the box ...wore them to work. They looked great with my business casual chinos, as well as with my weekend jeans. I chose the beautiful Mocca Croco, a rich chocolate brown. Stunning! The leather is wonderfully soft. To maintain the shoe's shape, insert a pair of shoe trees in them after each wearing ...a good practice for all leather footwear. Add a dab of polish, and your shoes will always look fresh and new. Zappos upgraded my shipping, so they arrived Monday, even though the order was placed Friday afternoon ...nothin' but LOVE for the ZAPPOS TEAM!

Fantastic! I just received my ara Portlands and they're great! My feet are hard to fit and these shoes are just what I need. Zappos, keep the good work!

Yay! Another color of a favorite shoe! I've had the ara Portland in black for two years now and have been wearing the daylights out of them, not that they look like it-- this is one durable shoe. It's great with pants suits, dresses up jeans, and I can walk in it forever and the fit is perfect. And I finally found a second color (the tortoise brown) in my size!!! This shoe seems a little pricey, but it's a complete winner.

Extremely comfortable, great value for the money! I was introduced to Ara in Germany when I lived there, and have worn this brand for decades. I still have a pair of Ara loafers that I bought in 2000 for about $79! Those were the days, I'm afraid. Prices may go up, but Ara quality stays the same year after year. I could wear these shoes 24/7 and they go with about any outfit. Thanks, Zappos, for featuring this great brand!

Great Style with Comfort to Boot! I recently bought this shoe and absolutely love it! I bought it specifically to use as a "walking around town comfortably without looking like I just left the gym" shoe, and that's just what I got. It is very comfortable and also very stylish. One caveat, however, is the sizing. I find that whenever I order a European made shoe, I end up with the wrong size, either too large or too small. I always end up buying it in multiple sizes until I find the right one and then send the wrong sizes back. This time I ended up with a smaller than usual size, but had to add a foam insole b/c the shoe was too roomy from top to bottom (height, not width). This, of course, only adds to the comfort level I was looking for, but I feel the shoe would have been very comfy without the insole had it been the right height. Regardless, I love this shoe and recommend it.

I Love these shoes! I first tried Ara shoes on at a local store and didn't buy them...for no particular reason. I then went home and obsessed over them and tried to figure out why I hadn't bought them. I went on Zappos, found them and they arrived the next day. They are my everyday black shoes and I love them. They are the most comfortable shoes ever. In fact, I check back all the time to see what other Ara shoes are available to add to my collection. Well worth the price. Really, they are my most comfortable, looks good with everything shoes.

Comfort and Class - This shoe caught my eye because it was a classic loafer, yet had real style. The first pair I bought was too big, so I had to go down one size to get a perfect fit. They are very comfortable, although I feel that the insole at first was very cushiony and supportive, but after a few wearings, it seems a little less so. I walk a lot for my job and may need to add insoles that are thicker, but for everyday wear, these are perfect. I get lots of compliments on these and you will too.

Great look, quality and comfort! I have not seen these shoes at any local store, so it was a bit of a leap for me to purchase them online. I am very glad that I did. They have a great look and are very comfortable. The Ara 'portland' offers super support and comfort in a great looking shoe. Thanks Zappos for offering these!

Super comfy - I got these tonight and slipped them on after trying my Geox's that I love (just bought 3 pair) these are even more comfortable - felt like I didn't have anything on and offers a better stability of the sole than my Geox (if you've never worn them the sole is shaped a little different so that it feels like you can rock from side to side). Haven't worn any extended time yet so I am a little concerned as some of the comments say they stretch - they feel perfect now so if they do stretch they will be too big, but I'd rather have them too big than too small. Have never tried this brand before but just ordered a 2nd pair as I can tell they are definite keepers. I got the brown croco and they are definitely shiny/flashy - hopefully not too much.

Comfort deluxe - This shoe was so comfortable from day one; no break-in period. They run large, so I did have to go one size down (even with orthotics!). They are classy and dressy with such a wonderful feel when walking. I highly recommend this shoe for folks who have hurting feet and/or wear orthotics. You'll be glad you bought these.

Perfect - Exactly what I needed -- something nice I could wear all day in a classroom. I don't feel like I'm dressing down in order to be comfortable -- they're beautiful. Yet it feels like I'm wearing slippers -- I can concentrate on my job instead of my aching feet since these are so comfortable!

Comfortable walking shoes - This is my third pair of these -they are great for walking - I have trouble with getting comfortable shoes and these are the best.

Great Shoes - These are classy and comfortable shoes. They can be worn for work or to dress up jeans. They seem to run a half-size large and are a little on the wide side in the heels, but I really love the way they look and feel.

cushy and comfy - I loved these shoes so much I bought a second pair in another color. After wearing out in the world only one time they had stretched so much in the width that I had to return them both. I'm so disappointed because they were ultra comfortable. If you have a wider foot I think they would be better for you. Otherwise, great quality and look. Not good arch support.
