I looked at every review I could find before I bought the Engineer 12R boot. Usually with shoes I am an 8 or 8 1/2 and I almost always size up to a 9 for boots. For the Melissa Button Back Zip (wide calf) I ordered a 9 and they fit perfect, because of the narrow toe box. For the Engineer I took the plunge and ordered an 8 1/2 and I am glad I did. The toe is not as narrow as other boots and they fit perfect! I have a rather high arch, so I did need to undo the buckles on the boots before I could slide my foot in. After wearing these around my house for a day or so, taking them off and putting them back on I no longer need to undo the buckles. These boots are a very thick and substantial leather, but they are not hard to break in. Frye leather is of such a quality that a break in may be a bit uncomfortable, but it will not be painful. Because I am a very active person I have a rather wide calf. At first I was worried that this would be a problem, but with a 33 inch inseam the top of the boot doesn't get close to the muscular "problem" parts of my legs. The bottoms of these boots also feel very thick. The rubber looks like it will keep me from slipping around on ice and snow in Minnesota winters. These are not my first pair of Frye boots and they will not be my last. The boots and leather are just wonderful, the customer service is amazing, and no matter what pair of boots you pick they will look good with almost everything you own. These Engineer 12R boots may be my new favorite. They look great with everything, even leggings.

I was worried because I cannot get my tall Paige boots on easily but as soon as I took these out of the box they slid right on. Comfy and not heavy.

Bought these a few months ago and I pretty much wear them everyday. They are extremely durable and go well with most outfits. Once you break them in, they are quite comfortable, even for walking long distances

My husband got me these last winter and I absolutely adore my boots. I wear them all the time and they still look brand new. Only qualm I have is that my arch is very high which makes the boots a little hard to put on. Otherwise I am sold on these.

For years now I have been a big fan of Frye boots. This was my first time ordering on line. I am very pleased with my purchase and look forward to ordering again. With minimal care Frye boots last years and years and are well worth every penny.

First of all, Zappos is Amazing! It took me a few different sizes to figure out what was the best fit. Usually an 8 in heels, 8.5-9 in sneakers and 9 in boots. 8.5 in engineer fit best. Toe box is generous so I wear thick sox and still ultra comfy. I have high instep and wider feet. No problems getting feet in. I fell in love with the Gaucho color and decided after 2 weeks I must get them in Black too. Black leather is stiffer and can't wait for them to break in. I opted for 12r as the upper circumference comes right under the widest area of my calf and is flattering. I also have 16 in athletic calves and was so happy the boots fit. Great with skinny jeans, under bootcut jeans and skirts and dresses. I will wear these till they fall apart. They are so comfy and stylish that I have been living in them since i got them. Thank you Zappos for being the best in customer service after so many tries. I am a customer for life. Please dont change a thing. I would rather deal with tou then take a chance with another company, even if they have a slightly better deal.

These may me the most comfortable pair of boots that I have ever owned. I am a size 7, but I decided to go a half size larger, 7.5. Footbed is a little narrow and with no zipper assistance to ease your foot in the boot, half sizes are a gift of heaven. I tend to over use and over wear all of my shoes, I am thankful that these are so well made.

I have a few Fryes and this has to be the most substantial pair I now own. Great support and extremely comfortable. The leather seems a bit thicker than my pair of Campus. I normally wear a 5.5 and ordered it in that size. If you want a boot to wear with thick socks, I'd go 1/2 a size up. I initially read all of the reviews about this being the, be all and end all of all boots and I'd have to say, they were all right about that! I also love the fact that they are made here in the U.S. If you want a pair of Fryes that will wow you, this is it!

LOVE these boots. They are great with jeans but tremendous with skirts and dresses. Get complements whenever worn. Comfort improves as they get worn, and they do take some break in time. If they are long enough, give them time to learn to love you.

My 16 year old daughter ordered these for school this year. She is an 8½ and she ordered them in her size and the fit is perfect. They are just as well made and great looking as ever. Thanks, Frye, for continuing to provide quality boots that last.

I bought these two weeks ago after agonizing for months over what style of Frye's to get it this time. I already own a pair of the black harness model which I loved, however, I wanted something a bit different . They are everything I hoped they would be. So tough, so versatile, timelessly stylish- they scream quality. I wear them with skirts, dresses, pants and jeans. My only warning is they need to be broken in, it took these past two weeks for them to start loosening up. Also I love that they are Made in the USA, it feels good to support craftsmanship here at home.

This boot is awesome. I'm pretty much an 8 in all my shoes, and so that's what I ordered. I debated getting an 8.5, but I'm glad I decided to trust the majority of reviews that claimed they were true to size. The fit is absolutely perfect, and even a little roomy with a thin sock on. I literally didn't want to take these boots off after I tried them on. They're a little difficult to get onto your foot at first, but that gets easier with wear and was not a deterrent for me in any way. I'm excited that these will practically last the rest of my life, and that they're made in the USA! If you're on the fence, just go for it. Go with the size you most commonly wear, and that should be just fine! Thank you, Frye and Zappos!

I bought these boots as a gift to myself a couple of months ago. I have 3 other pairs of Fryes (harness short, harness americana, campus 14L) and love them, but I wanted a pair in red, and with a rubber sole. These boots definitely run 1/2 small. I had to order up so that the arch support fit my foot properly, and so I had room in the toe box. These boots were a nightmare to break in - took many walks with my dog and suffered some blisters on my heels - but once they broke in, they became my favorite pair. I feel like I can stomp around any terrain in them. I fondly call them my end-of-the-world boots because if I had to grab one pair of boots and live in them, these would be it. I love the burnt red; goes with so much of my stuff, even some pinks. The rubber soles add enough cushioning that my feet never get tired. I love the height of the 12r and think they go better with dresses than the 8r; the extra height adds some femininity to an otherwise tough-looking boot. I only buy made in America Fryes, and these are.

This is my second review of the Fryes, I ordered the 12R in 8W, which is my normal size, and once the leather is stretched, there's definitely room for your toes and heel. You don't want a perfect fit and you don't want your heel slipping out each time you take a step. It took me maybe 2-3 days (8 hr work period, on my feet all day) to break them in. If you do get your regular size, just be aware that socks make them a bit harder to slip on.

This is my third pair of Frye Engineers in different colors over the last five years. They are excellent in quality and style. I always get compliments - they look great! During much of the year I wear them practically all the time! They are so very comfortable and accommodate my orthotics! Zappos customer service is outstanding as they assisted quickly with a flaw in my boots and the replacement was at my door in record time! I have always been impressed with the fast delivery and exceptional customer service.

Love 'em! The leather is stiff so they take a little wearing in but they are comfortable right away on my feet and I have tender feet. Very stylish and timeless.

I have an almost unnatural affinity for these boots. They are very comfortable -- though you have to be patient in getting them on the first few times -- and look great with everything. Note that the black will bleed onto whatever is underneath them, so I have a pair of gray skinny jeans that may always be black on the bottom 4 inches. It's not completely rational, but I love them anyway.

I'm not a "shoe person," but there is something about these boots that I'm absolutely in love with. I just put them on and my feet are blissfully happy- now that's a rare occurrence! I ordered them online and they fit like a glove. I use that Frye product to clean them off once in awhile and then water-proofed them which made the color a bit darker but I actually don't mind this new color. I like the worn in look so I don't freak out when I scratch or spill something on them- the more worn in the better. I get compliments on them on a daily basis by complete strangers which says something. I highly recommend these boots because they are just awesome. The height of the heel is perfect as well as where the boot hits on your lower calf.

These boots are awesome! They're visually stunning, and made with obviously excellent craftsmanship. I will say that they do require some breaking in. I normally wear an 8, and bought my usual size and upon first wear, noticed that the instep area was really tight. I wore them around my house for a day to no avail. I did some research online about how to stretch them out and ended up using my iron to blast some steam on the instep area until it was moist (being careful not to actually touch the iron to the leather) and then I wore them until they dried completely. Now they're perfect! They're wonderfully comfortable and they look great with skinny jeans or dresses. I can foresee myself getting a lot of use out of these, even into the summer months. The "gaucho" color is beautiful. It's a soft, sort of brushed leather. Be aware, Frye does not recommend using any leather creams on the gaucho color. I learned this after I bought their brand of weatherproof dressing and called their customer service line!

Just got my new boots - did a ton of research into the right boots, wanted funky but not too over the top - these will be great with everything! Like everyone said, the fit and getting on is not too comfortable, but now they are great! Love the Goucho brown tone - can be very versatile. I think these will be great, time will tell with the break in process - but love them so far.

Thanks to all the Zappistas who warned that there would be some initial breaking in necessary. There was some resistance when I first pulled on these boots, but just a few hours later they feel like I've worn them for years. Now they are super comfortable and extremely stylish and I feel like I've won the boot lottery. They look and feel great, and you won't be sorry you bought them. Just pay the $ and enjoy.

The quality is obvious right out of the box. The boots are solid and substantial. Had to order the second pair to get the size right, ordered up a half size and went with the the W for extra width across the toe box. As others have said in reviews, it is certainly a challenge to get these on, but is does get a bit easier after some wear. Easy off but truly a trial to put on. Offers great support and foot protection while wearing if you do barn chores like I do. Apply a little waterproofing oil and these Fryes will last a very long time. A bit pricy but the quality is there. A good boot, indeed.

I wear a 6½ in all heels, flats and sandals. Boots and running shoes I wear a 7. With Fryes I typically stick to a 6½. These shoes fit well in length and width. My issue is I have a high arch and the top of the boot runs on the bone (top of foot) depending on the sock that I wear. I have to wear thin socks with these. If I wanted thicker socks I would size half up to a 7. Otherwise this is a super high quality boot. I own about eight pairs of Fryes and I love these just as much as the others. I wear them with skinny jeans, leggings, and shorts. I have not quite worn them with a skirt yet but I imagine that I will. Get them. You will not regret it.
