Let's get one thing out of the way. I murder shoes. I am a photographer and have unrealistic expectations of what my shoes should be able to do. This shoe meets and exceeds those expectations. I just ordered another pair of these shoes to replace my 14 month old pair that are finally showing signs of wear. In the last 14 months, I've worn these shoes in every possible atmosphere: Snow, sleet, rain, freezing temps, 100 degree plus temps. I've worn them in forest fires, house fires, and at accident scenes where they've kept their traction in oil, foam, transmission fluid and the like. They feel great on my foot, they really take abuse and they don't show it. These replaced my Merrell Interceptors, a shoe that might be a bit better looking but has a much softer sole that didn't hold up to my abuse. My only complaint is that these aren't waterproof. I replaced them with the GoreTex version today and don't expect to buy another pair of shoes till March 2013. In short, there is nothing you can do, short of leaving them on fire, that will damage them. I highly recommend them. Once I determine how waterproof the GoreTex version is, I might swap my preference to that, but so far, these are the best shoes I've ever owned.

I really wanted to like these shoes because I like Patagonia and I like the way they look. However, after wearing them for a week, I am thoroughly disappointed. My biggest complaint is that my feet do not feel secure in them. The inside lining is too slippery so my feet move too much. No, the shoes were not too big for me. I even cinched down the laces to the point where they started to cut off circulation but my feet still moved too much. Did they spray the inside with Teflon?? Definitely not something I want to wear doing any type of technical hiking or scrambling over rocks. My other complaint is that the laces are made of slippery round nylon that don't like to stay tied so I have to either double knot them or constantly stop to retie them. Granted, you could just get new laces, but you shouldn't have to when paying a premium price for the Patagonia brand. Overall, I'm disappointed in these shoes.

I am a woman who is often stuck buying men's shoes because they don't make Wide in women's. Fortunately this style had several nice color choices. Tried several different shoes (thank you Zappos for making returns easy!) and these were the keepers. My baby toe sticks out a bit oddly and needs a good wide toe box without a lot of pressure across that knuckle. These work. And they are otherwise also very comfortable with great support for my rocky hiking trails or knobby forest paths.

I'd also recommend: New Balance

These shoes have been great - excellent support and grip. I can't really comment on the insoles since I immediately replaced them with superfeet, but the shoes held up great on a 4-day backpack trip with a heavy pack.

Comfortable shoe right out of the box. The problem I have had is that the heel is wide and does not have a defined cup. This makes the shoe unstable on rough ground. I am a trail runner that has covered many miles in lighter weight trail running shoes without ever rolling my ankle. I got these as a dedicated hiking shoe for when I'm not running. In just three hikes I have probably rolled my ankles at least 15 times. Don't be fooled by the comfort. If you have ever sprained your ankle or have weak ankles, be wary.

I'd also recommend: La Sportiva, the North Face

My wife and I each bought a pair of these - and we LOVE them! They are a bit heavier than many hiking shoes on the market, but they don't feel awkward or clumsy. The sole has what I can only describe as a 'rockered' feel to it - almost like the thickness decreases closer to the toe so that they don't have that clompy clown shoe feel. Whatever it is - it's great! The shoe is a wider shoe than some, but not overly so. Mine developed a tear right out of the box, which was really a bummer. Patagonia replaced them without any drama whatsoever - amazing customer service! This is my first pair of Pataguccis - and likely not my last!

I bought this shoe on a recommendation from a friend that said he liked them. I have had them less than a year and only wear them walking in our near by state park and some hiking. I'm not a big guy and am not hard on shoes. My Patagonia Drifter's are gone inside and out. Soles came apart, inside and around the heel wore out. For the price I expected more from Patagonia. I just purchased a new pair of Merrells.

I'd also recommend: Merrell-Keen
