I have been wearing Altras since the company first started. These specific shoes have pros and cons. On the pro side, the toe box width is nice and wide like earlier Altras were. I think the level of cushioning is just right. On the con side, the toe box height is way too short. I have never seen this before on any of my prior Altras. In fact I have never had this problem with any other shoe that I have ever owned. This lack of toe box height bothers my big toes. Some other notes: the shoelaces are way too short. Also I got these in black, but there are really a dark charcoal, not a true black. I could live with the minor stuff, but I cannot use these at all with a toe box that cramps my big toes. I wish I could still return them.

I have worn Escalantes 1.5, Escalante Racers, Torin 4.5 Plushs, Solstice 2, and Rivera 4s, all in search of the perfect shoe post meniscus surgery. These Escalante 4s feel like the perfect balance for everyday use and short to medium runs for me. With a narrow foot, for the first time I tried the Women's B width, and love the fit. Thanks!

I had my last pair for three years. They are a perfect gym shoe and a nice dark black. Unfortunately, my new dog ate them. My new ones arrived today and are not remotely black. They are navy/gray color as someone else described. The picture on the website definitely shows a true black. I already have a gray Altra and I'm bummed that my go to gym and work shoe is no longer going to match with all of my black clothing. I highly recommend advertising it as the color it is, or even better, pretty please bring back the nice dark black version! The shoe itself still looks and fits great. I guess time will tell if the sole peels back as others have mentioned.

I use this shoe for running mainly and love the wider toe box. It's a comfortable fit. The stack is not too high at 24 mm - I also have the escalante racer which has a 22mm stack. I am trying to progress down to minimalist shoes so the escalante 4 are a good step in that transition. I would like to see more choices from Altra with a low cushioning/ stack especially in their trail shoes. But I love that they stay loyal to the wider toe box and zero drop

I absolutely love these shoes. I bought one pair around the beginning of June and loved them so much that I bought another pair a month or so later. They are awesome to walk in and wear on a daily basis. They are so comfortable right out of the box. The only complaint I have is that the first pair I bought now have holes in the back of the heels so they now hurt my heel when I wear them. They are only 3 months old! It's unfortunate to pay that much for a pair of shoes for them to only last 3 months.

I really love these shoes and they have actually been really great for my shin splints and back. However, a section of the sole is peeling off after only about a month and a half of wear possibly even less than that. I don't really wear them that much since it's summer and I've been in mostly sandals, but I've been wearing them to the gym about four times a week. They peeled off after less than 25 days of wearing them which I've never had to happen with any other shoes. However, I continue wearing them because they have been the best shoes for my back and shins. I just wish the sole was better quality.

I walk 7 miles a day and always would wear On Cloud X because they are the only ones that didn't hurt my feet. I have tried Hoka, Nike, On, ASICS, Reebok to name a few and since On changed their Cloud X they hurt too. I love these - they are comfortable and don't hurt at all.

The shoe feels great but looks terrible because it's a navy/gray color when it's advertised as black! Thought I had found the perfect shoe until these arrived. Escalante meets all my criteria (zero drop, natural wide toe box, normal amount of cushion like a "regular" shoe) but I ordered and desired a BLACK shoe. These shoes match none of my clothing and are a huge disappointment. Hoping Altra exchanges them for something that meets my needs but I don't see any other styles in black that don't have an excessive amount of cushion. I really wish this model ACTUALLY came in black. It would be so easy for them to make this a black shoe like the one in the picture but alas
If style is important to you, don't order this shoe. It looks nothing like the shoe in the picture on the site.

Very comfortable shoe but it does feel a touch too narrow how it's advertised. There is also already damage to same place on the tongue of both shoes in the right corner. I want to like them!

These are my new favorite work shoes! I am a nurse who works in a fast paced unit at a hospital for 12 hour shifts, let me tell you my feet don't hurt after. I've been searching for years for a shoe to help with my tired aching legs and feet. What makes these good for me is the slight negative heel drop , wide toe box and lower profile. I have tried many other expensive brands, some literally feel like I'm walking in wet sand because of the incredibly high profile and cushion. I wear mostly barefoot type shoes at home but I found I needed a little cushion at work due to concrete floors. Thanks for making a shoe that seems to be made for me! I will definitely repurchase.

I've had these for less than 3mos and the sole is super worn and falling apart. Mostly walking, I've put less than ten miles running on them. Can't believe the drop off in quality since my last pair

I have an older version of this shoe that I love. I bought this version hoping to love it as muchbut I just don't. They aren't as softplus my old shoes felt like they were made just for my feet when I put them on the first time. These are somewhat stiff and feel like they are mass produced.

I've spent the past few years trying to find "my" sneaker a model I can simply purchase and rebuy as needed, that consistently fits/looks/feels the same. In that time, I've been through many Altras and Topos never quite finding the "one."
In any event, I was excited to see that the Escalante had returned to the original footbed the last time I comfortably wore a pair was via the 2.5 era and very happy, in turn, with the updated fit, which does (for me) comfortably accommodate a more narrow heel and splayed set of toes. I also like that it's not over cushioned, and doesn't have any unnecessary bells and whistles: it's just a good, solid shoe (I wear mine for long walks).
I'm on my second pair as of this week, and do have two small complaints (though I'm giving this a 5-star rating): one, there is a noticeable ridge/stiffness in the footbed that I can feel even through the cushioning. It's actually why I *almost* returned my first pair, but after a few days of wearing them in, it goes away. I tried on the 'Form' shoe with my last order, and almost wish there was a way to combine the two into a style that gives a bit more spring but with the roomier toe box, though the Escalante overall fits better, especially with a lower volume foot. Two, I got a solid five months out of my first pair of Escalantes, but really wish there were a way to either revive the soles or change out some other component versus having to buy an entirely new pair of shoes. It just seems like such a short runway for a relatively expensive piece of equipment, but I'd also rather not risk injury by wearing something worn out.
TL, DR: if you're particular about toe splay, want something simple yet functional and miss the 'old' Altras, this is the one sneak for you!

I walk 2 to 4 miles daily. I love the Escalante 4 and plan to buy a second pair. My only complaint is the laces. The laces are very short and absolutely need to be double knotted or they will not stay tied. Who created shoe laces that will not stay tied. Annoying.

I love everything about this shoe - I feel it truly makes me a better runner! It's light and beyond comfortable. I wear it on long dog walks and running, and even in the gym sometimes for cross-training. It's the best!

I LOVE these Escalante and want Altra to return to its core of being a comfortable, flexible running shoe. I love these! I wish Altra would bring back their Plush model as it felt like these with additional cushion (for 50+ like me). I am a runner/ walker and Physical therapist and believe in the zero drop shoes. But they can not be too stiff for running, and for running- I do not like the "rocket bottom" shoes. Stay true to your original vision Altra!!!

The Escalate 4 are my 4th pair of Altra shoes; and by far, my favorite. They are lightweight with lots of room in the toe box.

This is my 3rd escalante purchase and I miss the 2. These already have holes worn on inside of heels due to slippage. Shoelaces are too short, again (2s had great laces). Also, they aren't black.
