These shoes were uncomfortable and hurt my feet but I kept them because wearing them around the house my feet perspired so couldn't return them. The are real cute wish I had followed the review for the fit. The fitflops I ordered are a lot more comfortable. Will stick with fitflops.

Not for everyone. I've always heard how great Birkenstocks were this style is actually cute so I decided to try them. At the mall store I was fit in a birkenstock an entire size bigger than my normal size, it looked fine on my toes but the sole felt weird because the supports weren't supporting in the right places (since it was to big). I ordered my normal size from zappos the sole fit much better and I understand the praise for the supportive nature of the shoe. However, the toe area was just a tad to small (my 2nd and 3rd toes touched the raised edge). Upon further research on the birkenstock website they say their shoes don't fit people whose big toe is not their longest toe (my 2nd toe is slightly longer than my big toe and my 3rd toe is the same length as my big toe). They recommend that Birkenstock employee fit your shoe by hammering out the ridge if you have toes longer than your big toe. Hammering the shoe sounds like it would make the shoe look funny and decrease the durability so I returned them. I was worried about the hard plastic thong but I didn't feel it at all in the sole that fit me.

This shoe looks attractive but it is heavy, clunky, and not very pretty on the foot. The toe thong is uncomfortable even for people like myself who are accustomed to wearing this style. Meh, I can find a better choice at a more reasonable price that is comfortable and attractive - Back to Teva!

I recently bought my first Birkenstock Gizeh Birko-Flor from Zappos. I wore them according to the suggestions given on your site and by reviewers. However, after a little more than a week wearing them for a few hours, I noticed that my knees started bothering me and further on my lower back started to hurt so much that I had to stop exercising (only Yoga, weights, and Pilates) for 10 days. I haven’t had any back pain for more than 10 years. Coincidently, during these ten days the weather was cooler and rainy which made me wear sneakers and closed shoes making me stop wearing the Birkenstock. I am back exercising and no more pain but also no more wearing the Birkes.
It is a shame that I paid almost $100 for a sandal that’s so hard to break in and that can impact the way you stand and perhaps your gait and feet bones causing a domino effect in your whole body. And that’s why I am writing to you and see if I could return them for a refund since Zappos won’t accept them without the original box, which I don’t have anymore as I never expected to have this problem. For your information, the sandals look brand new. I would appreciate any help you can provide me.
That was the letter I wrote to the Birkenstock people which they never bother even responding. I only gave 2 stars because they are pretty.

Just...uncomfortable. I wanted so much to like them, and they were very close to comfy, but just didn't cut it with the poorly designed thong.

With Birkenstocks being known for being comfortable walking sandals I thought these were for sure perfect for my trip to Disney where you walk so many miles a day. Well I was completely wrong! With the way that the support and contouring on the sandal itself is placed, I had blisters in the middle of my foot and on my sides of my feet within 2 hours. Also because the support was hitting my foot in a spot it wasn't used to, my feet felt like they were being stabbed every time I walked. My feet were in so much pain by the end of the day. Good thing I didn't wear these at the beginning of the trip. So beware of these sandals, you may think they are comfortable when you are walking around your house but when it comes to actually wearing them out, they are not comfortable whatsoever.

I have never been a fan of Birkenstock's style until I saw these. Based on the excellent reviews I ordered these in three colors because I was getting ready to leave for a cruise and planned on wearing them with everything. Good thing I packed backup shoes because I needed them. I never could get used to the hard, thick, rigid plastic thong portion of the sandal. I live in San Diego and live in flip-flops year round and I have never had anything so dang uncomfortable between my toes. I tried to break them in, wearing them for several hours over several days but I was so miserable, I could not take anymore and gave up on them for good. They were true to size and width, styling is great, footbed is comfortable but that plastic thong is a torture device. Back to Zappos these Birkies go.

I am so disappointed; I really wanted to love these sandals. I ordered the Insignia Blue; the color is beautiful. The fit is good (a little roomy); I am a true 9 and the 9-9½ is a bit roomy, but the straps can easily tighten the fit. I really wanted to love these sandals but the plastic in between the large toe and the second toe is not comfortable. It might break in but I could hardly stand walking around my living room, so I am not sure how long I could tolerate breaking them in. I also have slightly wide feet, and the way they looked on my feet was not very flattering. I think if you have narrow feet, or a feet that are not wide, then these are probably more flattering. I am sending these back due to uncomfortable plastic.

Before purchasing these shoes, I read the reviews posted on Zappos website. I saw that many people stated the shoes were uncomfortable due to the hard plastic between the toes. However, as a seasoned and long time flip flop wearer, I hoped this would not be the case for me. Unfortunately, I found the plastic between the toes to be unbearable. Could barely take two steps in the shoes-unbearable. Thanks to Zappos friendly return policy, I've sent them back and will attempt to find another style I love. :)

I really wanted these to work. I saw almost every woman in Rome this summer wearing this sandal and it convinced me to buy them. I love the look of them and they seem like they would be very comfortable. First off, I wear a size 9M (I'm 5'7", 130lbs), so I ordered these in size 40 (9-9.5). They were too big, so then I got the size 39 (8-8.5), which fit perfectly (I ordered the toffee color). Secondly, the plastic thong in between the toes is too hard. I tried walking around in them at home to see if I would get used to it, but I didn't. I almost cried when I knew I couldn't wear these. They have a totally great look, but are way too uncomfortable to wear.

Rigid sandal. The piece that goes in between your toes is a hard piece of plastic/rubber. I found it painful to wear. These are going back. But as always, Zappos is an amazing company to buy from. Been buying shoes from them for 9 years. Customer for life!

I have worn Birks more than 20 years this is the first time buying thong sandals. Disappointed, very uncomfortable specially the toe ridge; still trying to brake them in (3 weeks) I will never buy this style again.

Terrible. I got these shoes because I heeded support and comfortable shoes. They are tough, the foot of my toes are sore, and the bone under my pinky finger hurts. I have RA and I am in need of comfort, after one day and a few hours, I was not able to walk at all. It took days to recover. Went out and bought fit flops sandals instead. This is the worst money spent...never again.

I have a standing desk in my office, & these are the only sandals I have found that really work with this set up.
However, I wore these to a trade show recently, where lots of walking was required. The plastic thong piece that connects the patent leather strap to the sole cut my foot. I ended up with 1/2" bleeding cut.
These are not returnable after they have been worn, so try them on in a store first if you can.

Not happy with this shoe. I had expected that they would be more of a comfortable fix. They had no give to them and after you wore them for a couple of hours they became really uncomfortable. Not true to size.

I have several pairs but I recently bought the ones with the plastic between the toes and it is unbearable. I cannot even wear them because I did not realize how painful they were until I wore them outside and walked a block. I threw that money away. I absolutely love their other sandals! These are the best things on the market. My podiatrist told me, if I m not in my orthotics, I should be in Birkenstocks.

I have flat feet and wear custom orthotics, so buying sandals is a struggle. I thought I lucked out with Birkenstocks, but the truth is, the different arch support messed with my alignment and ended up giving me a lot of knee pain. Such a shame, because the silver color is really cute and the shape is mostly flattering. Also, I am a 5.5 but ordered a 35 after reading reviews. That was the right choice. But back they go.

I am in the camp of reviewers who just couldn't get along with the hard plastic piece that goes between your toes. Sandals at this price are definitely an investment for me, so I didn't want to take the chance that I *might* get used to them by wearing them outside and not being able to return them. I wore them for brief periods around the house for a few days, but the plastic "thong" was just too uncomfortable, and I returned them. The foot bed was great, and I love the style. I ordered the Titanium color, which is this beautiful, slightly green-silver, but not too shiny. I am a solid 10.5, and the 41 fit perfectly.

This is a beautiful design on my size 10 (US) foot and I love the way the footbed feels. The upper sandal part is also very soft and easy on the skin. It doesn't cut in. However, the plastic piece that the big and second toe fit around is stiff and excruciatingly painful. I wore these a couple hours for a few days (around the house) and each time I was forced to remove them due to the stiff plastic design of the toe. Super bummed!

From the picture, I thought the Emerald Isle color was more of a teal, with a hint of metallic. The shoe is actually more of a kelly green (not what I was looking for), with almost a glittery high metallic sheen. I also did not like the look of it on my foot, but that was more due to my own preference. I thought the thong silhouette would have a slimming effect (like other thongs do) to my wide foot, however it simply did not; it looked like a very wide foot in a thong. I have owned other Birkenstock sandals in the past, and will probably own more. Just not this one (though this one would be great for someone who wants a high-sparkle, kelly green comfy sandal, and has an already narrow foot).

I thought I would love these because I live in either my regular Birkenstocks, or various flip flops. Maybe they will get more comfortable the more I wear them, but so far they are not comfortable.

This was my first and last pair of Birkenstocks. I purchased these shoes because I am 6 months pregnant and my already wide feet are very swollen, and since I heard great things about the support and extra width of Birkenstocks I gave them a try. When I got them they were really uncomfortable but after reading how they need to be broken in, I gave them a chance. But after wearing them for the fourth time I got blisters on the balls of my feet and the strap dug into the top of my foot and made me bleed. No shoe should ever make your foot blister and bleed in an effort to become comfortable, especially when you're pregnant. I am very disappointed, but fortunately Zappos is so great they took them back worn given my situation.

First Birkenstock, last Birkenstock. After hearing for so long about Birkenstock's legendary comfort, I finally decided to try a pair. I have a wide foot, bunion and in the past problems with plantar fasciitis. This sandal was a huge disappointment. Not enough arch support for me, toe stem was painful, and felt like the sole of the sandal was not flexible. Convinced me to go order more Orthaheel Tide sandals.

The toe post is horribly uncomfortable. I wore them less than an hour and my feet were rubbed raw. They are also a bit shorter than all my other Birk sandals. I pray that I can return them!

My wife ordered this sandal but has only worn them a few times. The leather piece that goes between her toes makes the sandal too irritating to wear.
