The sneaker is comfortable, for sure, however the toe box is large and makes the shoe look a bit clownish. My other Hokas were not like this and I prefer the leaner look.

The shoe is very comfortable and the wider width I had read bad reviews about felt okay. However, they look so strange because they're so wide! I felt like I was walking on a ping pong paddle when I looked down on them. They're as comfortable as my ASICS Gel Kayanu 29s, so I'll go back to ASICS.

The shoes run large. I should have got a size smaller. They look huge on my feet.

I love this shoe for comfort and is very light weight. I have had the Gaviota previously but this version felt wider and bulkier, just felt it looked clunky. I will return and see if I can settle on a different Hoka.

I have medium arches and these were painful for me! I think that they were just hitting me in the wrong spot but I could feel my arches getting sore after just walking around my house for ten minutes. They also look really unattractive from above; I was okay with the overall bulkiness but they looked like duck feet from my vantage point. Returned.

This is the second pair of Hokas I've tried, but both had way too much room in the toe box for me. I order a B width to accommodate my prescription orthotic, even though I have narrow feet. With Brooks shoes, a tongue pad makes them work for me, but the same is not (sadly) true for the Hokas.

Gaviota 3 & 4 worked great for my skinny, low-volume foot, providing ample cushioning and a stiff enough sole that my bunion area (specifically, the sesamoid bone below the ball of my foot) did not flex too much when walking. The shape of Gaviota 5 has changed. It is wider in the forefoot, like clown shoes, and the shoe is squishier, so my toe flexes more when I walk, which is painful. I am disappointed to have spent all this money and now have to start over to find a shoe that works. I wish they had stuck with a good thing.

I needed comfortable shoes for walking. I have arthritis in my feet, and hoped they would ease the pain. The shoes are okay, but my feet still hurt when I take walks.

While the sizing and color are exactly as I wanted...I don't find these shoes comfortable. They have a hard inner sole and the left show rubs on the top of my foot. Been trying to adjust to accommodate with the laces.
I am disappointed as members of my family raved on the Hoka brand...maybe it's just the model i picked; they were pricey for what I'm experiencing.

I've been intrigued by Hoka's since I heard they came in wide sizes. Yes indeed, a wide toe box, but medium to narrow on the inner arch. And minor arch support at that. I tried the Gaviota 5, and the Bondi - same thing. Back they both go... too bad, I liked the "rocker" effect, which was recommended by my podiatrist.

if you like your heel to feel lower that the rest of your foot, then this is the shoe for you. i think this is the heel to toe "early rocker." these are not like the gaviota 4, which i adore. it's a good shoe but not for me.

This is my 4th pair of Gaviota shoes. I’ve noticed Hoka seems to make them wider each year, which was ok for a while. But in the Gaviota 5, it goes too far. I wish I hadn’t kept these shoes. The prior versions were fantastic, very comfortable shoes. But the 5 is way too wide. I have to lace and tie them super-tight from top to bottom but even then, my foot feels like it’s moving around. (I did try a smaller size before buying these but they were too short.) Very disappointing, especially for the price.

My podiatrist recommend Hoka's years ago. The design offered the structure for the realignment of my feet using custom orthotists. The new design broadens the toe base without adequate support. The fit, even with custom orthotics is problematic. I walk 4-5 miles, 7 days a week for years. Go through 3 pairs of Hoka's per year. I will be looking for another brand that will offer the stabilization that is required for my feet. Maybe you can offer the original line of Hoka's, offering the structure that we depend on for the demand on our feet.
Thank you for letting me part of the Hoka World. It is time to move on.

This item was purchased to replace a Hoka Bondi 7. The Hoka Gaviota 5 seemed wider than the Bondi and the fixed tongue was uncomfortable, too tight across the top of the foot at the arch.

I’ve been running in the Bondi 8 after tearing up my 48-year-old knees in bad shoes. The shoes you choose DO make a huge difference. As a supinator (high arches, stride tends to favor the outside of my foot), the Gaviota 5 was recommended as an improvement upon the Bondi. Less ‘squish’ to keep my knees stable, but enough to keep them pain-free…and H frame to help keep my stride neutral. That’s great, but the shoes are significantly wider than the Bondi. I had to draw the laces up almost completely together for the shoe to feel secure. The toe box is HUGE…there’s enough room for my toes AND some of their friends. So, as much as I like the advanced technology of the Gaviota 5, the Bondi 8 is better (even if a little ‘squishier) for my fairly normal-width foot. I’m returning the Gaviota 5s and treating myself to a new pair of Bondi 8s!
