Here's the truth on the new Gaviota 5.
I've worn the Bondi 7, Bondi 8 and the Gaviota 4. Tried the Clifton 9 but they just felt like a Bondi 8 little brother - not much cushion in the fore-foot.
I have bad knees - multiple surgeries/injuries due to sports throughout my life, a bad back and degenerating neck.
The Gaviota 5's are absolutely Hoka's MOST cushioned and supportive shoe! Even my Bondi 8's come in 2nd place to them. I'm on my feet and doing a lot of walking all day. With the Gaviota 5's I can get more accomplished and still feel decent at the end of the day!
Saying that - be careful when buying. I normally wear a wide in other sports shoes, including both the Bondi's and the Gaviota 4. With the Gaviota 5, I'm wearing a normal width and there's still plenty of space in the toe box. In fact, I could have easily dropped down a half size and still been fine.
The other issue is the tongue. It has elastic on the inside part only, so the tongue always rides to the inside. Not really uncomfortable, just annoying.
Still, the Gaviota 5's are a big win!

The all new Gaviota 5 has a nice big toe box! Yay! But it's more shallow than prior versions, so it's not good for custom orthodics. Boo! Why can't they just put a roomy toebox with a deep pair of shoes, why is that so hard????
It has more cushion than all the prior versions. It has a new support structure, instead of the J frame up to this point. Also it's a higher drop. Feels pretty good. I mostly love the roomy toebox. Ridiculously expensive. Hope it's worth it.

I really wanted to love these. I bought them partly based on the APMA certification. They look awesome in style and color, lots of room in the toe box, but that "H Frame" was killing my feet. IMO, it makes the shoe stiff and unyielding. Such a bummer, but back they went. Exchanged them for a pair of Brooks Glycerin 22 (a runner neighbor's recommendation). Hopefully the Brooks' will work out better. Thank you, Zappos, for having such a generous return policy!

I ordered my usual size 6.5 but these feel a little big - maybe not an entire half size, but close. And very, very wide in the toe area, as others have mentioned. They're also very slippery inside for me. I needed to tighten the laces a lot because they were so wide (and I have pretty wide toes), and that made the laces and ankles painful when combined with the slipping. The style is mostly fine, they do look a touch silly because of the width but if I needed it then I wouldn't be embarrassed to wear them, it's not THAT bad. But overall they're much too wide in the toes, much too slippery inside for my foot, and just a little too big overall for me. The support and traction are excellent per usual with Hoka, the ventilation seems very good, and it's a nice shoe otherwise.

At first they we’re great! However, after I wore them for a bit while I was exercising, my orthotics did not fit in them quite properly. And my foot ended up being quite sore. I wish I could have kept them because they were super pretty as well.

The Gaviota is supposed to be a plush shoe, but the shoe was uncomfortable right from the start. Felt like it had very little padding. The front of the shoe has a wide platform which was a bit wide for my narrow foot. Attractive enough in appearance.

I choose shoes on comfort, not looks. This shoe feels pretty good, with a nice wide toebox and good cushioning. But this huge, clunky shoe is too ugly even for me. (It looks a LOT better in the photo.) Returning.

It seems that Hoka has changed the tie box. The shoe is way too big, too wide. There’s a lot of room in the toe box. I’ve worn HOKA’s over the years. This is a really different shoe.

Runs wide. I am a 7 1/2W. I originally got the 8M because I usually have to wear that size in a sneaker. Had to return for the 7 1/2M. It’s still a bit wide. For some reason this shoe makes the soles of my feet hot. Not sure yet if I’d buy another pair or go back to my Brooks Ghost 15

These shoes in a wide width are too wide in the midfoot and heel. Hoka should correct that - most people who want a width toe box width don't want a wide midfoot and wider heel. Heel slips with every step.

I've been wearing Hoka brand athletic shoes for a number of years. I thought I would try the Gaviota based on it providing stable support as I over pronate. However, the shape of the sole along the widest part of the foot is very exaggerated. With the exaggerated width of the sole and the narrower shape of the top of the shoe it looked out of proportion. Actually, the proportion reminded me of a clown shoe.

I've been on four runs with these so far. I find that they rub the inside of my foot weirdly and if I ran longer distances, I'd expect bad blisters. My calves also cramp a lot wearing these, which might be from the squishiness. I purchased these in part for the rumored softness--I'm prearthiritic on my metatarsals, and I will say that the cushion really softens the blow, but it seems to do so at the cost of stability, because I feel the inside soles giving too much, and it's causing knee pain.

Looked into Hoka's for because of bunions. Would love to have been able to wear them, but where laces stop hit directly on my bunion and were really uncomfortable.

While the fit was okay, they have changed the styling of the Gaviota 5 so that it now looks like clown shoes. The toe box is now ridiculously wide despite it being a medium width. I will probably need to find another style in the Hoka line or my usual Ryka. Disappointing, especially since the delivery time was much longer than I am used to for Zappos. I have a deadline with an upcoming trip and could have used the break in time.

I suffer from calf and ankle issues. Have been dealing with them for almost 3 years. I have purchased countless Hoka's and none have helped better the issue; I will say they are the best brand compared to all the others I've tried. My issue with the Gaviota 5s is that they do not last whatsoever. I wear them for walking indoors 5 days a week and within the first three months the sole was already worn, to the point my podiatrist was telling me my shoes were too old and worn; I told him I had just gotten them 3 months prior! My very first pair of Hokas around 2 years ago were the best I ever had, but they only lasted 6 months. All others purchased since Ive noticed the quality has gone down. I'd love to try the new ones that just came out but at that price point!

I wear Gaviota 4 which I love immensely. And I wear Bondi 8 as well . I'm a nurse and I'm on my feet all day for 12 hours, usually more like 16 hours. I bought the Gaviota 5 thinking they were going to be similar to the Gaviota 4 . They are not. It seems like you have turned the Gaviota 5 into Bondi 8. I feel it's the exact same shoe. Gaviota 4 wqs absolutely perfect. It was the perfect shoe. It didn't have that big balloon Feel as bondi size 10 if you hold it up to the gaviata 4 looks two sizes bigger. It's really hard to explain this, but the two different shoe styles are actually one in the same. Gaviota 5 is Bondi 8. Now I'm going to have to go online and find a pair of Gaviota 4 purchase them and not know if I'm getting counterfeit shoes or not because you changed your best shoe into a Bondi 8.
