My husband loves these for a base layer. He said they are the warmest he has ever had.

It is the crew shirt with the increased thickness and warmth I expected compared to the medium weight I had. I had doubts about the medium weight at first, because it was a lot thinner than I expected, but it worked well when I tried it (for a medium weight that is). With the medium weight layered with a shell and Atom LT, I can work outside down to about 5 degree Celsius without significant discomfort. I have tried out the heavy weight , but the weather got warmer. So, my current estimate from trying both is that with Rab Xenair Jacket (not the hooded alpine), this heavy weight can lower that workable range down below 0 degree Celsius FOR ME. And, I am not talking about, "It kept me warm while I walked to my car", amateur level people seem to be talking about. Not talking about this particular site, but people giving reviews about winter gear tend to grossly overrate the warmth of stuff they review. However, I can see how the heavy weight can be a bit too much for people who spends most of their time doing a lot of physical exertion. It would probably suit more people who stands outside a lot, but not continuously doing physical exertion. I am talking about people who walks a long distance or doing patrol or investigative work outdoors in winter, etc. I hope to post an update after I test it in Big Bear. I see it has disappeared from LL Bean site catalog, and I hope it returns, since I need more of it.

I ordered this item after ordering the LL BEAN HEAVYWEIGHT BASELAYER PANTS. As with the pants, I am very pleased with this added layer of warmth. I call it my "Capt. Kirk" shirt (by its cut, fit & design). I also love the "thumb holes" on the sleeves, eliminating unwanted roll-up when donning your next layer. Also, both pants and shirt are great for just lounging around. It's a whole new feeling to running around in your underwear.

I like this shirt. Kinda wish the thumb holes were not there because it would be a nice outer layer too. Plan to use it for hunting, but like it for any outdoor activity or just wearing around a chilly house!

Keeps you very warm during those cold winter months! I also wear them as pjs as well! I have bought 4 sets bottoms and tops to go with different colors of flannel shirts that I have purchased from LL Bean as well!!

This is an outstanding base layer at a good price. I use it for cold walks in the city and winter hikes and I'm amazed at how warm I am.

My husband wasn't cold at all in this and says he might be able to get away with not wearing coveralls this winter. He wore top and bottom to a cattle show and was pleasantly warm, almost hot at one point, and said he could move easily in these.

Fits like a glove. It keeps me warm, which is very important.
I have been an LLBean customer since 1965 or thereabouts. And before me my father was an LLBean customer. And so too was his father. As a family, we go back to when the company was founded in 1912.

Great undergarment or great as an outer garment when you just need a wind break while hiking in cool weather. This is a true fit item ( 5' 11"; 185 lbs ) . I hike nearly 800 miles per year in all types of weather and climates. When it will be cool and / or breezy, this is my go to outer gear. When it will be cold and windy, I wear this under a light jacket. I also have the lightweight version that I have worn with this heavyweight version. A very flexible combo.

I am very pleased with this shirt. It is soft and warm and the fit is just right. I'm about 5'7" and 140 lbs. and bought the shirt in size small. It's so comfortable that I've been wearing it around the house on cool fall days but am sure it will feel great as a base layer also as winter comes in.

Buying this heavyweight base layer with wicking function really is a blessing because I walk regularly outdoor including winter season. Started using this base layer in Dec. in Tennessee and when temperature was below 50 degrees F, it worked for me. Instead of sweating all over my body, the base layer keeps minimal moisture next to my skin. I wear a fleece outside this base layer and a snow coat over the fleece. I love thumb holds of this product to keep my hands covered to metacarpals. After walking, hang the base layer up, and it will be dried and ready for the next walking day. Still need to wear gloves and a hat when temperature outside is below 40.

I work in a warehouse without heat in California. Sometimes I sit extended periods of time in the cold. Other times I'm moving around the length of this 6500 sq. ft building. This and the medium weight version recently purchased are just right. Never scratchy, long enough to tuck in and never awkwardly bulky.
An added plus is the thumb slit located at the bottom of the sleeve. Almost like a fingerless glove for warmth and yet allowing fingers to be used without botheration. I roll it into a cuff when I am doing wet work. So keep making these with the thumb slit! Hope they'll still be available when I want to buy more.

Purchased this base layer for cycling in the cooler weather of around 45 degrees. Does the job when layered. Fits snugly which is good for a base lsyer

I ordered a large to have a slightly looser fit. This is my second order for this great heavy weight insulated crew neck top... (I wore out my other set after about 8 years)
I layer my winter dress all the time to be comfortable, which is key to warmth. Don't forget the same product is available in long underwear.... which I also wear ! I highly recommend it !
