Unfortunately, I didn't order a size down so the boots were too big. Also, the tongue dug into my calf and was very uncomfortable. Next time, I'll buy boots at the LL Bean store in our area so I can try them on and make sure the fit is right.

After deliberating for weeks, reading reviews, and finally calling and talking to an LL Bean customer service rep for about 15 minutes to confirm that I did, in fact, really and truly need to order a half size down from my normal shoe size, I pulled the trigger and ordered an 8 1/2 (I am a size 9). Customer service rep assured me that Bean boots are uniquely sized and made especially roomy to accommodate a thicker sock with wiggle room for toes and assured me that in many cases a full size smaller is what is needed. Against my better judgment, I ordered a half size smaller and waited with great anticipation and excitement for my Bean boots. Upon receiving them I immediately attempted to try them on, only to discover that I could not even get my foot in the boot (with a lightweight Smartwool sock on). I was shocked and looked to make sure the boots were the correct size (they were) and that there wasn't a packing insert that needed removing (there wasn't). I removed the insulated insole just to see how much difference that made (I was not going to wear the boots without the insole - that would defeat the purpose) and without the insole I was able to get my foot in the boot but the fit was entirely too snug. I believe, based on trying this boot on, that a size 9 1/2 (or maybe even a 10) would be the way to go. Unfortunately, they are now sold out of the size I need in the color I want. I asked them to overnight the same style in a different color/size without charging my credit card (I am immediately returning the others) and was told no. They offered me 15% off and to charge my card, but if I am paying this much money for a boot then I want the exact boot I want and 15% is not enough of a discount considering I ended up with a boot I cannot wear based on their strong recommendation. The boots are beautiful and look very well made (I had a pair in college and wish I had not gotten rid of them) but be advised - think twice before ordering a smaller size! I do not know how any of the people who ordered this boot in a smaller size are able to get their foot in the boot. I am 100% astounded at the reviews saying the boot fit perfectly in a half size smaller. I am extremely disappointed and sad about this whole experience. I was super excited about having a pair of Bean boots (for the style and for the cold weather we are experiencing in the South right now). The customer service experience was polite but not above and beyond. Not what I would have expected from LL Bean.

I've been a teenager. I asked for them for Christmas this year. My mom had warned me that the box was really flimsy and not like a normal brand new shoe box. And had weird writing on it. I'm certain these are used. The shoe box says only one lace in box. There are laces on the boots and there was one extra lace shoved in one boot. There was zero tissue paper inside the boots or in the box, the bottoms are a little dirty and the boot has small scratch and scuff marks. Usually I never leave reviews but $200 on one pair of shoes to be sent out not brand new is concerning. They seem good quality from the feeling of them etc.

These boots hurt my legs so much that I injured my knee trying to correct for the pain. The leather is so stiff on the shaft and the tongue that I could not make them comfortable and could not lace them all the way up. Given the reputation and the COST of these boots, I expected that they would be good right out of the box. They are not. They rub right at the midpoint on my ankle and do not seem to soften with time or wear. I am so disappointed with these expensive boots being almost unwearable for me. I wanted to give them a chance to become the boots of legend that they are, but they have proven, even after adding inserts and wearing thicker socks, to be nearly unwearable. I wish I could return them- and I would in a heartbeat. They are some of the most uncomfortable shoes I have ever had, and certainly the most expensive. I would not recommend these to anyone I cared about....
