I absolutely love these shoes. The area around your toes is flared out to give your toes extra wiggle room while you run, which allows me to have a more natural running stride.
So essentially - you get some extra room around your toes and a nice snug fit around your ankles. They're perfect!

At first I was very skeptical about the shoes because of the appearance of their shape. However, after slipping them on and taking them for a stroll, I was amazed. The shoes feel great, the cushioning is not overwhelming like other shoes and light. When I took them for a run they seem to be designed to anticipate your next step so they glide easily with you.

I'm loving my Escalante 3s! My runs are stable trail, road, and dirt and the shoe performs well on all three. More than that though it's comfortable, padded enough that my soles are happy but not so much that I can't get a feel of the road beneath my feet, and I haven't gotten any scrape or chafe on my heel as I put the miles on. My love is for the toe box though! Wide and freeee. I find myself gravitating toward the 3's when going for a walk downtown or out for a beer just because they are comfortable and I like being in them. Also, great for board sports if you're into them. Enough grip to keep you anchored but not so much you cannot shift foot position on the board.
I got my pair a half size larger than my usual measurements and that was perfect for my foot so consider upping a half size.
They're worth your purchase so give them a shot!

Ran my first marathon in this shoe. I loved the natural feel, my foot was able to stay relaxed with each step because of the extra bit of space near the front of the shoe. Great look and feel!

They feel great, and feel very good to maneuver around, running and jumping. I normally wear an 11.5 was only able to see an 11 but the 11 fits perfect. Toes able to spread well and feels natural.

This Escalante is better in all aspects vs previous models. The upper is better structured to provide more security. The midsole is more substantial without losing the connection to the ground. I use these for everything - Run, Workouts, Everyday wear. Though there are a group of very vocal seemingly loyal fans who have turned on the brand out of ignorance and inability to see the improvements, they couldn't be more wrong. The brand is stronger for the improvements that have been made over the past couple of years. This shoe is proof of that. People with "wide" feet that love Altra should try the wide width options. But for normal feet, these shoes fit so much better. No longer sloppy, just foot shaped. Toes can spread out with out feeling like they are in a boat. And the shoes perform better for it.

I've only been wearing these shoes for about a week, but they are great. I really like the fit and comfort of them.

Let me start by saying i am dedicated to Reebok nano's. I own way more pairs then i should. Picking up a pair of these Altra Running Escalante 3 as part of a product test i was very skeptical. Out of the box these are a great looking shoe. Nice contour great color pattern. They feel light and somewhat flexible in the sole. First thing you notice the toe box. Nice super wide toe box. Allowing your foot to spread out and not be jammed into an uncomfortable cramped position. Putting the Escalante's on they are super comfortable. They have more cushioning and support through the full foot then i am used to, i have flat feet so barefoot shoes are ideal for me, but surprisingly it works. standing on flat ground i feel like i am leaning back a bit but i know that's just my own ergonomics at work. Around the house they are very comfortable and could easily be used as an every day shoe. On the road and on the trail the shoe seems to really shine. With every stride and impact on the ground whether its pavement, dirt, logs branches, the shoe feels great as it grips the terrain almost as if it gets wider to give you a more stable footing. I have not had a chance to test longevity but on the surface these look and feel like a quality shoe that will last for quite awhile. Will these replace my Nano X2's? I will have to give them a more extensive test but i will say they are a close contender and will move to the front in my lineup.

Love this shoe. The zero lift is great for my calves and running. the Version 3.0 is everything that made the 2.5 great, but better, like the padded tongue.

This shoe has just the right cushion underfoot, soft yet not sloppy upper and, a grippy outsole that will make you want reach for this shoe just about every time you need to wear a shoe. From gym workouts to faster paced runs to medium distance runs, this shoe will take you the distance and have fun doing so. If you are looking for a foot shaped zero drop shoe that will help you enjoy doing what you love, look no further than the ALTRA ESCALANTE 3, this shoe was made for you.

Compared to the Escalante Racer, I had to go up a 1/2 size but now it feels great. The upper is more secure than the Escalante 2.5, and the midsole is softer than the Racer. If you're an Altra fan, the Escalante 3 is an excellent daily trainer.

The shoes fit wide like they are supposed too. I reccomend getting some high arch inserts if you have high arches but other than that, great shoes.

Bottom line - this installation of the Escalante is awesome. There are too many people on here making you question your purchase, especially those of us who love the Escalante line. This shoe is ever so slightly more tight fitting for width, but it isn't dramatic at all. The upper is slightly more rigid, as to not allow your feet to slide as much on turns, etc. Personally, that is an improvement in my opinion from the 2/2.5. Overall, this shoe still rocks and I love running in them. If you're on the fence based on the off-hand reviews, just stick with your gut!! The Escalante is still great!

I've ran in every version of the Escalante's since the 1.5's. The best before this shoe were the 2.0's, because they were so durable. I put about 1000 miles on each pair I owned. The only drawback was they took like 50 miles or so to break in. Altra screwed up the 2.5's, because the upper knit was to flexible and made for an unstable foot while running. These 3.0's brought back the durability and stability of the 2.0's, and I haven't experienced any breaking in period through about 40 miles of running. My faith in the Altra Escalante is restored!

Wore straight out of the box for a speedy 5k and they continue to be shoe of choice for most workouts. New upper provides a more secure fit than the 2.5.

I tried these on at REI and bought them at my local running store (to get a better colorway). I was worried about the fit, but the toebox is about as wide as I'd hoped (for a running shoe). I've had every pair of Lone Peaks since the 4, and that's my favorite everyday and hiking shoe, but I like a bit slightly snugger fit (but still a wide toe box) for trail/road running. My favorite Altra running shoe is the old Timp 2 (sizing up, and after the uppers loosen a bit). Until now, I've always just kept two pairs, and used one for road and one for trails. The road runs demolish the outsole, but I just haven't found a pair of road shoes I like as much. I also have a pair of Riveras, and use them a bit in the gym, but they're just too narrow in the toebox for my liking. Size wise, I think Altra nailed it with this one. I'm a 12 in just about everything (including the LP 6), and the 12 in the Escalante 3 fit great. (And there's more room in the toe box (and a more accommodating upper) than the Timp 2 (if that's helpful to anyone).

Really digging this update of the Escalante. I run in these for 4 miles and under, around town, on the track for quicker workouts. I'm really impressed with the comfort and versatility, and possibly the best looking running shoe in my closet!

I have a foot that needs to embrace the space! I am blessed to be on the Red Team for ALTRA and I get to try so many shoes. This shoe is by far the best everyday road shoe!

I went from Torin 4 to Torin 5 to Escalante 3. No complaints about a single one of them. I've only switched because of color availability at the time of purchase. As someone who runs 12-18 miles a week and a half marathon every few weeks, I've had NO complaints about the Escalante 3.

Honestly I'm not sure what the negative reviews are about. I'm a big fan of these shoes. I've run in them for about a month now and am very pleased with them over the 2.5s. The cushioning is definitely more than previous versions, but the sizing fits much better than the 2.5s. And they added the second eyelet back to the heel of the shoes which makes a huge difference to me in terms of stability.

Love this shoe. In my opinion the escalate saved me from years of previous injuries. But why can't we get dark/black soles on road running shoes?
