As I was considering buying these, I read quite a few negative reviews so after using them 10+ times and LOVING them, I thought I better write a review.
I have been runner for 35 years and have done many endurance, ultra-endurance events including multiple Bostons. These shoes are AMAZING. After 10 runs in them and I'm blown away. Why?
- the amount of foam/stack is about perfect for good road feel but still providing comfort (did 20k this morning, they were great)
- very light
- roomy toe box (I've never owned a shoe like this before) and the forefoot, toe splay comfort is exceptional
I've seriously been missing the boat on these, wish I would have discovered decades ago. I also bought a pair of Altra Lone Peak 7s for trail and same feedback, I'm blown away.
Can't recommend highly enough.

So far I have jogged about mile and have walked and sprinted in this shoe. It feels great with a good amount of cushioning. It lets me heel strike when jogging, and run/sprint on my mid or forefoot.

Sized up and it fits perfect! My toes can move! Super comfortable and immediately went out and bought another pair for running and a pair for my son. Highly recommend these shoes!

What a miracle this shoe design is for my son. He has an extra wide toe cup area, and it is really hard to find shoes that are wide enough in that area without being too big in the heel. These have enough room, and my son does not have any plantar fasciitis issues that were happening with the new balance. New balance is great for the large toe cup, but these are even better! It takes a bit to get used to them, but so worth trying.

I've run in the 1.5, 2 and 3. The 3 is by far the best. Best fit. Best cushioning. Best feel. The people who dislike want a more casual shoe. This shoe is meant for actual running.

If you have a low volume footNarrow heel and mid foot and wide only in the forefoot, this is your shoe. Love that they are snug through the arch area. Not much of a runner so can't comment on high miles etc. mostly for the gym and office. Please don't no change this shoe, much better than the 2.5.

I was hesitant to buy the Escalante 3 since I've been running in Altra Escalantes for a while and the reviews for the 3 made it sound like a whole new shoe. Despite the aesthetic changes, they feel just as good on my feet as the prior versions.

I have been wearing zero drop shoes since 2008, mostly FiveFingers and Vivobarefoot. But about 6 months ago the ball of my foot started needing some cushioning, so I found Altra. I can’t say enough how smooth the transition was from no cushion or support to a full shoe, and that’s due to how the Altra’s are constructed. Wide toe box, zero drop, and with the Escalante, not too much cushion. I have a wide mid-foot, so I do better in the men’s version. I’m hooked!

The escalante 3 has been my best running shoe I've ever had, I've used these for all my training (long runs, speed work, recovery, etc.) I've put around 1,200 miles on them and they still surprisingly feel good considering how many miles are on them.

I've run in all 3 versions of the Escalante. This one, like the others, has felt great and lasted long. I'm at around 500 miles in my current pair, and they're still in decent shape. And they look great.

Seems to have good grip. Very low profile. Brings joy back to running after too much numbing cushion in the Hugh stack cousins. They make you feel like a kid again, running. I plan to use them on wet brick sidewalks with leaf fall soon, but they did well on dry leaves, the treadmill and walking about for coffee, etc. I still might wear more cushioned shoes some days, but look forward to putting these on. You want a shoe you feel happy lacing up, bottom line. One that makes you kick it up a notch. They can obviously go fast. Not for people who like running on trampolines underfoot, which I think can be jarring to joins long-term.

I find that most women’s shoes aren’t quite wide enough for my feet, yet men’s shoes tend to be too roomy. This is the exception to that rule. Other Altras do well, but this one’s the best. Great fit, perfect for my needs. Can wear them on serious walks or just to be on my feet all day.

My first go in to Altra road shoes. Couldn't be more happy. Just hit 400 miles this week and ready to order another pair!! Never once felt like I was in the wrong shoe.

I read some long time users were not happy w/ the Escalante's as compared to the old Escalante's. I can only comment on these specific shoes. I am totally happy that I gave Altra's a try. I absolutely love the comfort of the shoe, especially the toe box. I'm happy that I found a zero drop shoe to add to my rotation. I'm a big Brooks fan & will continue to be. But I think it's important to have a variety of shoes and drops in your rotation. These shoes look great also! I've worn them for short runs, long runs and runs of varying speeds. I feel they are comfortable and responsive. The fit is great - no blisters or anything. Shoes are a very specific thing for each person. All I can say is I've had a great experience thus far with these shoes and I look forward to getting another pair.

I use this product as a casual shoe and at my desk job. My feet feel free and unrestrained in a pillowy soft yet sturdy shoe. So glad the size 15 black got more in stock which allowed me to buy!

Stopped running years ago due to knee problems and have had problems finding shoes that work to simply walk for any distance. These are a game changer for me. The wide toe box and snug heel just work for me to hold my foot in place and the cushioning is just the right amount.

Used my first pair for exercise walks and they have lasted many more miles than any other shoe. Easy to care for and comfortable.

Love this shoe! And I am hoping that the fact that it has the APMA Seal will keep it from being changed except for new colors. Every time I find a shoe that I love, Altra changes it. Very annoying!

I have narrow feet, but like the added toe box space. I tried several models of Alltra, and these were the best fit. I imagine that many Altra fans have wide feet, so I could see the feedback there. Two others models had my feet swimming. But these are extremely comfortable. I bought two pairs - one for work (personal trrainer) and one for every day walking (8-10miles per day - NYC living). Highly recommend.
My only recommendation is to buy a pair darker in color. I have the white and the orange - both quickly and easily darker in color at the toes.

Love the shoes, but wish they came in all black.
Wearing these shoes make my feet feel incredible. No foot pain just comfort all day. My only issue is some of the ultra shoes. Look a little dorky so I wish they came in all black. Otherwise we're 100% recommend the fit.

Love love love this shoe I have tried bondi 8 new balance and glycerine brooks among others that weren't quite right. But this shoe is finally the perfect fit! If you wear new balance size up a size to get the same fit as this runs true to size new balance runs big. The squareish toe feature is ingenious!!!!! It makes so much sense our toes are not pointed like other shoe brands. make. Plus it is low to the ground so balance is righteous. Yay I am not losing my balance like with the bondi. The cushioning in the heel could be a tad more comfortable and more shock resistant but I certainly would not want to trade that for a taller thicker shoe this one hugs the ground and is adequate for the amount of walking I do. I am trying to build up to longer walks soon I will because I am finally comfortable in the toes.
Thrilled,

I used to run miles, I mean miles. After 2nd back surgery I haven't been able to. Unfortunately still can't. Used to wear Altra racing flats, and loved them.
Recently started walking for slight cardio, and decided to pick up a pair of Altras.
Love them. Can't run but sure can walk more upright and do resistance training more comfortable.
Would love a pair built sturdier for the gym. That's a hint Altra.
