I bought same size of these as my old Escalantes and am disappointed that the toe box is smaller and that the width feels narrower across my bunions. They are short enough that my toes hit the end when walking vs. the same size shoe that I've had for (admittedly) years, and the width rubs on my bunions. I remember the first time I tried on my old shoes and they fit beautifully. This design feels like it's changed to a narrower and tighter fit, not good for those of us who were recommended to buy Altra to alleviate bunion pain. I'm disappointed because they have been the the first and only sneaker brand I can wear for miles without any bunion pain. The shoes that are now available with the "original toe box" that I love are too bulky-looking for casual every day wear and long walks and seem to be geared toward with hiking and all-terrain running.

What a huge disappointment. ALTRA what have you done with my toe box? I understand the need for less roll but that could have been accomplished in other ways. These shoes feel tighter on my toes than my old One V3s, a shoe I wish you would bring back btw.

Unfortunately I have not been able to find another brand with zero drop and wide toe box which is the only reason I use Altra. Every pair I have owned falls apart within 3 months.

Posted a review, 2 stars, rk702. You ruin the Escalante 2 and then tell me to try your shoes with the original shape? Why change a great shoe?? Escalante started with the wide box and 0 drop.

I love the classic Escalante. This isn't it. This pair was immediately painful and I had to go back to using my old, worn-down pair (which are still much more comfortable than the new pair). It doesn't appear that Altra is offering good alternative. Really disappointed with this shoe and with Altra's current offering in general.

Super narrow and uncomfortable. I used a pair of 2.5 as a pair of casual shoes. I couldn't really run a ton in them, but I probably had hundreds of walking miles and the soles were falling apart, but it was still comfortable because of the stretchy upper. It was a great casual and gym shoe.
The 3 in comparison fits way tighter. It's unusable. I hope Altra remembers their roots.

I have worn Escalantes since the 1.5s. I owned half a dozen 1.5s. I didn't like the 2s, but I loved the 2.5s and went through another half a dozen pairs. The 3s will be skipped, sadly. Too narrow.

Long time Altra customer, I had your first production shoe and I've only run on Altras since. I'm a big fan of the Escalante runner, until the Escalante 3.0. You have me shopping elsewhere for my running shoe, please don't mess with the Lone Peak. I need the wide toe box and the full tongue to fit my 4E, high arch foot the Escalante 3.0 is very tight on my foot, I might be able to use them without the insert. Are you giving up on your mission of giving us a shoe that will allow our toes to splay? Are marketers running your company now?

Long time Escalante runner. Always appreciated the wide toe box. Sadly these are a totally different fit. Tongue runs only halfway down the upper and the fabric portion under the tongue is too tight!

I have four of the original Escalante 1 and 2 but this version 3 is nothing like its predessors -- it's off on so many vectors -- narrower, weirder looking, not as low profile, not as comfortable.

I love these shoes I wear one pair for running, then they transition into my casual shoes that I wear all the time. And now my grown son, daughter, and even wife own a pair and love them. And the these last forever. Well done Altra.

Great shoe, wear them most days on my training runs
Don't change them - they are a good balance of comfort and durability and are good on road and non technical terrain

They fit my feet perfectly with the wide toe box, and I can wear these all day at work. Not the best looking shoe on the market (IMHO), but I am partial to the look of skate shoes. Now, if Altra could make a skate shoe, I'd be all in.

Recurring owner of Altra Escalante 3.0. Love them; they feel great on shorter runs as well as on long ones and I am ready to tackle anything with those on!

Are the best bearfoot running shoes I have bought. Are very light and confortable. At the same time they provide enough foot protection and at the same time great road feel.
I hope Altra never discontinues this shoes.

Love these shoes. Nice upgrade from the previous version. I started running on Escalantes but since have mostly used them for walking. I can walk on these all day with no discomfort. I like the low cushion, minimalistic style. I always get compliments.

I’m tired of these boomers that leave reviews from a shoe they remember 10 years ago. The brand is changing it reaches a younger group of people who want white shoeboxes but with a little bit more style get over your legacy shoes switch to different brand if you have to, but quit leaving one star reviews because it makes the brand look bad and my shoes fit great and they’re just fine! I think just convincing people to TRY ON a WIDE TOE BOX SHOE is what’s really important so everyone can have better feet! Who cares if the design has changed and been updated they are still 3 times better than narrow Nikes.

Can again run long distances with minimal chronic knee or shin pain (previously an issue with over-cushioned Brooks shoes). Zero-drop is a game changer. About 200 miles in and no sign of wear at all.

I went to try on a few shoes and I knew the second I slipped the Escalante on that I had to have them. They feel responsive and can handle anything from a short tempo run to a marathon. Excellent.

I have plantar fasciitis and the Escalante 3 has been the best shoe at alleviating the pain and discomfort - no inserts or braces needed.

I can't express how much I've enjoyed these shoes. I've put 974 miles on my first pair and I'm back to get another. I run 40-60 miles a week in these. My feet never hurt and they have held up in the wet Eugene, OR weather. The tread has almost worn out but not bad at all after this many miles. I'm stoked to get a fresh pair to wear in my next thousand miles! Thanks Altra.

I'm not in the normal demographic for this brand of shoe. Read the great Wirecutter review on this model last fall, bought a pair, fell in love, and I just bought pair #7. As I work from home they are my everyday shoe. Sorry to hear the 3 is being phased out. The color combos on most of them are awesome. Just love these things.
Zero drop FTW!

Great shoe. Use it for running, walking and everyday around town. My feet need a wide toe box and this fits the bill.
