This sweater definitely runs large. I tend to be inbetween a small and a medium. After reading reviews I went with the small. It's a good fit and with some shrinkage will be even better. It is heavy but just lovely! It is a less soft cotton but if that bothers you it can easily be worn with a lightweight shirt under it. I can't wait for some cooler weather to show this exceptional sweater off! I plan to get another one!

As another reviewer mentioned, I've wanted a classic fisherman's knit sweater for years. I ordered a large in the Shadow Blue. The color is lovely, a pretty soft lighter blue but not too light to make you look washed out.The reviews told me it ran big, but I opted for a large due to my long arms. The sleeves reached my knuckles, and the length is plenty long (full coverage and then some) so I know the medium will be perfect. The neckline is just right - the pima cotton crewneck pairs well with it. I just shipped it back to exchange for a medium. Looking forward to receiving this lovely, classic sweater!

The sweater is gorgeous. Initially ordered a large because I didn't want it tight and I wanted to wear it with leggings. For me, (5'7 155#) the large was VERY big. I brought it back to Freeport and got a medium and it's perfect. It stretches nicely and is probably a sweater that I will keep wearing all year round. Boating gets cold sometimes, and so do spring baseball games in Maine. Thank you LLBean, I am going to start saving up to buy another color!!! Love how it angles longer in the back and covers up my backside!

Like a lot of you here, I read almost every review before pulling the trigger, since this sweater is really an expensive splurge. I think its popularity keeps the price high, and now I can understand why. It really is perfect in every way. Having said that, I am so glad that I heeded the advice in the reviews and ordered one size down. The Small fits perfectly, but I think I would have been unhappy with the Medium, at 5'6" and 155. I ordered the beige, which I would never call beige, myself. It has the true sort of yellowish base of all Irish fisherman sweaters; kind of the color of eggnog. I actually like it because it adds to the authentic look, and I have warm tones in my skin. If you do not like yellow undertones, you might prefer the sailcloth color. The stiches/patterns are beautiful. I do not think the neck is too big--it's lovely and feminine looking. In no way does it come close to showing my bra straps. For everyone here that complained that the sweater fits like a dress (too long), or that the neckline goes to their shoulders, I can only guess that you ordered the wrong size. I do not know, for instance, if there is a difference in length between sizes, but this sweater in a Small (on me, at least) covers the bum and crotch, but it us no longer than that, at all. It is also not "scratchy, itchy, or overly heavy." I did not find the arms "too tight" either. As it is made from cotton, I assume it will stretch just a little in the arms during the day, anyway, so I would not want it to start off too loose. Unlike some of you, I absolutely love the heavily patterned arms. This is one gorgeous sweater, and the weight of it allows it to drape in an attractive way on the body. Thank you LL Bean, I am 100% satisfied with my purchase. And, many thanks to all of you who took the time to write reviews and post photos.

This is a substantial, heavy cotton sweater. It is not soft, but it doesn't itch like wool. I bought the gold (on sale!) for a pop of color and I like the way it pairs with the stitching on my jeans. It's a functional wardrobe staple and I've already worn it a number of times in just a few weeks. It's the perfect weekend sweater with jeans or leggings and a white t-shirt. The details add value - the side zippers, the boat neckline, the curved hem, the beautiful cable stitching. I was pleased that a LL Bean "L" was a great fit, as I expected it to be too small since in other brands I order XL. I would order a size smaller than you usually wear. I'll have this sweater forever!

From the moment I put it on, I adored this sweater! I got the pale blue, and it's a lovely shade. The fit for my size is perfect. The arms are snug which I like and the weight of the sweater is gorgeous! I can's say enough about how much I love this garment. It's well made. One caveat is that there are multiple threads in the weave so be careful about snagging it on anything. Also, if you're going out to eat splattery, oily food - take the seater off as the cotton absorbs oil quickly. But just love this sweater, and I feel very feminine and stylish wearing it. Bravo LL Bean!

I had purchased one in another lovely green and was determined to buy more. I simply fell in love with the Sailcloth color and couldn't be more happy with my choice. The texture and feel of this sweater is absolutely lovely. It is warm without being overly warm and the color compliments so many things. Wonderful sweater and one I'll wear over and over!

I loved this so much so bought it in two colors. Washes well. I lay it flat to dry and toss it in dryer for a few minutes to soften . It is worth every penny. I would buy it again.

I have wanted this sweater for months now but I was afraid it wouldn't fit. I am plus sized and normally wear a 1x and some 2x tops. I'm a 38DDD and wear a size 18 jeans and this sweater fits perfectly. The arm length is good and it is long enough to cover my behind. Its not a soft or fuzzy sweater but that's what I like about it. It's rugged and has a very sturdy feel. I think it's definitely worth the money. I will buy it in other colors. If you are plus sized and are worried about the sweater not fitting, I urge you to try it.

I bought a tan one, loved it, so bought the light blue and burnt orange-red color later! I washed but laid flat to dry. Found it feels better with a second rinse or less detergent. We use the clay ball from H2O at home with no laundry soap and that makes them come out perfectly. Perfect length for the tunic look and feel. Don't have to constantly check the sweater to make sure it's covering the rump. I've worn with leggings and jeans...looks great with anything!

If I could get this sweater in every color, I would. It fits way too big but still gives a great sillouet, and I've received so many compliments about it. My new favorite sweater!

I saw a woman wearing this sweater while out with friends and almost tackled her to find out where she bought it. So, thank you stranger! I was so excited when this arrived...it is the most comfortable sweater I have ever owned - it's heavy and feels like I'm wearing a (super cute) blanket. I'm on the short side, so the sleeves are a bit long, but that's pretty standard for me. It does run a bit large - the sweater is more of a tunic on me, and I probably could size down, but it's great to pair with leggings and boots. I have the "Storm Teal" color, and it's beautiful - beige/cream mixed with a light blue gives the sweater depth. I'm waiting to see how it holds up after a few washes, and then I'll most likely be ordering it in other colors (I may size down though).

Living in the south, I was a little nervous that this sweater would be too heavy. Not the case! It is the perfect addition to my winter wardrobe! I am between a medium and a small. I went with the medium bc I wanted to make sure it was long enough and I am happy I did bc I don't like my clothes super fitted. Definitely worth the investment!

So often sweaters of this design are made of wool. This one is 100% cotton, and I love the way that it feels! The size is also roomy, which I love in a sweater.

I ordered the Amber Honey. Glad I ordered the small, because as a tunic, it would have drowned me otherwise. It is gorgeous! As usual, this LLBean product is high quality. I'm looking forward to wearing it for years to come.

I now have three of these sweaters, beige, washed navy, and now my husband just bought the Amber Honey color for me for a Valentine's Day gift. It is a lovely warm color that reminds me of autumn leaves. I am 5' 2" and weigh 120 lbs. I ordered the XX-small because although the X-small fit nicely in the body, I felt it was about 3-4" too long for what I wanted. These sweaters are a heavy weight and have a rather coarse texture. If you are looking only for soft and fluffy, this is not for you. I personally like the feel of these. The Celtic cable design is lovely. I wear either a long sleeved T-shirt, a plaid shirt or a light denim blue shirt under mine. You can also wear a tank top or camisole so your bra won't show through the knit.
The cotton makes them breathable and comfortable. I have not tried to wash these sweaters yet, and pray they won't shrink. The only things I would change about these is that the necks are about 2-3" too wide. Also the sleeves are rather narrow and snug, and you have to be careful, gently working your arms out of them to avoid straining the knit when taking them off. I hope these last me for many years to come.
