This sweater has a little weight to it but it's not too heavy. It keeps me nice and warm on cold days. It's true to it's size. I got a small but actually I'm a medium. It fits o.k. anyways though.

I LOVE this sweater. I am back to purchase another one in a different color because I love it soooo much! the fit is amazing. I love that it falls slightly lower than my waist and has a rounded look to the bottom for a flattering shape...the neckline is slightly wider so it is almost like a boat neck which is flattering as well. It is very warm; i wore this to a football game in 28 degrees over a chambray button down and was very warm under my jacket. i bought a similar sweater in ireland (that i love) but that one is very itchy...this one is not. i wish i could give a hundred stars!!!

It doesn't matter what I order from L.L. Bean...it is always reliable and satisfying...because it actually does what it says it will do...and the quality always makes me happy. ; End of story.

After eyeing this sweater for a couple of years, I finally bit the bullet and bought one in the Sailcloth color during one of L.L. Bean's sales. I'm so glad I did! I always loved this style of sweater (Irish fisherman), but normally the wool they are made with is not practical for where I live in the south. When I saw this one was 100% cotton I was in love. Based on the reviews, I initially ordered it in XS (for reference, I am a 36C and usually wear S or sometimes M if it runs small). It was very loose all over and I would say fit more like a loose M. Even though it's cotton and may shrink after washing, the XS would have still be way too big. Thankfully there was an XXS available in the sailcloth color, so I exchanged for that size and the fit was MUCH better with enough room for a t-shirt underneath. It's still a bit loose for my taste (I usually like my sweaters slightly fitted), but I'm sure it will shrink a little in the wash. The material is a substantial cotton for sure - which I love - but definitely not rough or scratchy (and I have sensitive skin). I also love the side zippers. It gives this piece character and is helpful if you have Bottom line: this sweater is a beautiful, high-quality piece with classic style. It does run large, so if you normally wear and XS or XXS, this may not work for you.

I can't understand the negative reviews. This is tunic. It's meant to be long. It works perfectly with leggings. It just covers my backside. Now it is heavier cotton so not super soft but not uncomfortable. It runs very big though. I am between a small and medium and ordered the small which was too big so I shrank it to fit which works perfectly. I have 7 of them. One I ordered in size XS and it fits perfectly before washing but fits the same as the size S (after washing/drying). Order a size down or even two sizes down. Please make it in a pink!

I have wanted this style sweater for sometime. I decided to order and lover the fit, color and warmth. Goes great with jeans. Rather than wearing a coat and jacket on a cool day, this does the job. It is high quality and this will be a piece that will never go out of style.

After reading through ALL of the reviews, I decided to get XXS. I usually wear a S. I'm 5'10", 125lbs, 34B, with long torso and arms. The XXS fit perfectly (S would have been wayyy too big on me. What are smaller/shorter people going to do?!). Fitted cut, but enough room to wear a collared or cotton long sleeve shirt underneath. Great length, scooped bottom edge is flattering - looks good with jeans or spandex or even a dress underneath.
I marked true to size, but really a S should have been true to size, and I had to go down 2 sizes b/c the sweater runs way large.

Love this sweater, but it runs a bit big. I ordered my usual size Medium (my other Bean sweaters are Mediums) but had to exchange it for a Small. I like the length of the sweater and it is well made, just lots of room in the torso area. I was surprised at this since I have a little bit of a belly. The small fits great!

I have 2 of these sweaters and I love them. They are thick, heavy and beautifully made. The style is classic and can be dressed up or down. The quality is worth the price and I know these sweaters will last forever.

Ordered a Medium but it was a little big. Exchanged it for a Small and fits perfect! Yarn is a little stiff but I think once I start wearing it (or wash it) it will be better. Too warm to wear it now. Looking forward to colder weather!

I'm going to try write as thorough a review as possible for this sweater for the benefit of potential purchasers in my height/size range. I typically prefer plus-sized sweaters because I'm taller with a larger bust and larger upper arms. I am pretty comfortable in an LL Bean size XL in most of their products, although if I'm wanting an oversized fit, I sometimes size up to a 1X or a 2X (especially in jackets). I am usually a 16 in most pants or dresses from most retailers.
As other reviewers state, this sweater does run large. If you are an XL or 1X (maybe even a 2X who is shorter or has slimmer arms), a L in this sweater will likely fit you. I disagree with assessments that the sweater is 2-3 sizes bigger than the marked size. I tried this sweater on in the beige in store, but did not like the color with my fair skin/blonde hair. I felt like it washed me out, and I would prefer either a lighter white (the sailcloth) or a darker oatmeal/camel shade. As the amber color was sold out in my size, I ordered the shadow blue in my size from the store. The color is beautiful on me, but the blue sweater is a touch larger and longer than the beige one I tried on in store, and I actually prefer it for that reason. The arms are a bit snug on me, but the knit is accommodating. The sweater is a true tunic length, even on my longer torso. It almost covers my butt in leggings, and I like the zippers on the hips to allow freedom of movement. The collar is not too wide on me, but I do have broader shoulders than the average woman.
This sweater is a substantial cotton knit. It's quite a heavy garment to wear, but I believe the style of the knit requires that. I would recommend at least a camisole under the sweater, but I think the weave is tight enough that you wouldn't absolutely need to wear something under it. I do not find the cotton knit "scratchy" as others have described it. If you've worn an Irish fisherman's sweater in wool before, then you know what to expect. It's my belief that if you want a soft, light sweater, you should cough up the dough for a cashmere sweater. The LL Bean cotton/cashmere sweaters are soft and lovely, but a fisherman's sweater like this one is never going to be soft and squishy, like some of these reviewers seem to want. As it is, this sweater is a perfect fisherman's sweater. It's substantial and will keep you warm and cozy. And with absolutely no wool content, it's not itchy at all.
An added bonus is that the shadow blue makes me feel like Marilyn Monroe in Let's Make Love. She wears a light blue fisherman's sweater over black tights when she's performing "My Heart Belongs to Daddy," and this sweater is almost a perfect replica. I plan on wearing it around my house in winter over black leggings, because who doesn't want to feel like a showgirl while being cozy?
TLDR: This is a great sweater. It runs large, so order a size smaller than you usually wear. It's a thick, cotton knit, so don't expect anything anything light and soft. It's a substantial garment. Just buy it.

This sweater is a dream come true! I've always admired fisherman sweaters, but don't like how closely crew necks are to my neck. This wide open design is perfect! I can wear a blouse under, or wear it alone.
It's deliciously thick and warm and classic! Bring on winter!

I'm really short and a little chunkier and I usually am a medium in most clothes. I originally purchase the medium and it was way too big. I returned it and got the small and it was perfect. Would definitely recommend going a size smaller than your usual size for other shirts/sweaters/sweatshirts. I'm a true medium and the small was the right fit for me. It's a heavy sweater which I love. You can tell it's quality.

I have. This sweater in 3 colors and will get more this season! Looks great with jeans and leggings! Perfect weight, stretchy enough to layer with a shirt under or just a cami. Adjusts well to varying temperatures throughout the day! You'll love it! So flattering!

I ordered a large and man was it big. I wanted the loose look but it was long too. Anyway I went to the store to try on different sizes and actually came home with a small! I am generally a 10-12 in various items of clothing. I order medium t shirts from some other companies or large in some things as I am broad shouldered. I love the fisherman knit sweater and this is a heavy one. It is cotton, but it has significant weight. Just order smaller than you might think.

I love the fit and feel of this sweater, my husband got it for me for Christmas last year. If I could go back though, I'd change it for a small. I have tons of room for layering, which is great, but I tend to feel that LLbean sizes run large. It's gorgeous over jeans, leggings, yoga pants, and overall it's a lovely, classic look. I have over 3-4 inches of space on either side of my hips with it if I pull it snug, and I wear a size 10 in pants.

Normally would buy a large but found the medium a better fit. I now own this sweater in five different colors. I love it so much. Love the look, the tunic style and the boat-neck. It is very well made and I have washed it and dried it in the dryer. Also have purchased some for friends when I found them on sale and they love the sweater too. It is a heavy sweater but because of the weave it is not too warm.

I love these sweaters. I have a few, in different colors. The zippers on the sides add a bit of flare and if I'm wearing a long-tailed shirt I raise the zippers to let a bit of the shirt show. The neck is large enough the collar and a bit of your shirt shows. These are cotton sweaters and pretty heavy. But in the fall and winter and spring they feel great. Just waiting for the next color!
I get lots of compliments on these sweaters.
