I have bought every new style of timps including this pair and the 4s are vastly different from the rest. I bought a pair of the torins with a similar tongue before purchasing these and was satisfied. The torins have a 1/4in of softness around the edge of the tongue but these do not. Im not sure how this got through product testing because it is horrible. I never write reviews but I thought this was a noticeable change that had I known I would not have purchased.

The Timp 4 fit my feet perfectly in terms of feel, comfort, lightness, etc. However, they don't last very long. My sides have holes in them & I had to duct tape them. The treads are worn out too. So I'm mixed. I love how they feel, but it's very expensive & inconvenient to have to replace them only after a few months.

For a slim fit I feel they are still too wide and the tongue is too short.
The space allows my foot to slime around and it then gives me blisters on sides of my big toe and pinky toe.
The tongue doesn't stay above my laces as it barely reaches the top of them as it is.
If not for this I'd give the shoe 5 stars as the cushion feels great.
Altra needs to incorporate the tongue as one piece with the rest of the shoe or make it much longer so it doesn't slide down to the toes. I'd return them if I could but I've wore them twice on trails.

I have had two pairs of the Timp 4s and use them primarily for trail running, the first pair i got 500 miles out of and the current pair are tearing on the sides at about 250 miles. They are so comfortable on my feet besides the tongue which stabs my ankles and makes them bleed. I had the Timp 3s and they fell apart pretty quickly, these seem to hold up mostly better besides the sides tearing. Please fix the tongue on these shoes! The tongue on the Timp 3s was so much better!

I've had multiple pairs to Timps and am happy to come back for more. But the tongue on the Timp 4 bites into the front part of my ankle and gives me a nasty cut! I used a band aid for a few days, had some cross training, and developed tough scabs that are allowing me to keep wearing. Ouch! Fix this Altra!!

I love the comfort, wide toe box and cushioning. My favorite shoe! I bought them Feb 23 and by the end of April, they began to deteriorate; stitching coming loose & a hole near the toe guard on the left shoe. I walk 3 miles a day, most days, so they don't even have many miles on them yet. That's after 2 months of minimal wear. Thought I found the best shoe, but it seems they can't even hold up to short, simple walks! Disappointing!

I love the color and style of these. Unfortunately, the tongue is too rigid and uncomfortable and they rub my bunion. These are more rigid than other Altras I’ve worn.

I love the color and style of these, but, sadly, the tongue is uncomfortable and they rub my bunion. Also, they are more rigid than Altras I’ve worn in the past.

wanted to love these so much, instant weird toe numbing. Not sure if they are just too big or the bend is not matched up with my foot or what. Darn, I love the color though.

I loved these shoes but returned them due to feeling as short as the Size 7 I ordered previously. 7.5 seemed as short. The color is gorgeous and so comfortable as far as arch support and comfort.

I had to cut the tongue down, which makes them wearable. The fit is loose along the whole foot, so I wear double socks to help. I do like the overall softness and comfort of the shoe, as well as zero drop. The sole is plush but also flexible and provides nice ground-feel.

I loved the Timp 2! This is not that. Timp 4 shoe feels OK, but the tongue is the worst. Keep trying different lacing patterns to get it to stay centered. Slides to the side so the notch in the tongue is centered on the shin and slides down bunching over the big toe. I may resort to trimming the tongue like another reviewer mentioned. Also feels like there is less padding under the ball of the big toe than the Timp 2. Bummer.

This shoe feels great but I can't wear them because the tongue digs in my leg no matter what I do!! Long sock, short sock it's all the same!! So unfortunate!!! Taking it back to the store!!

The shoes are super comfortably and loved the ride in my first 5 mi run in them with no break in. But the TONGUE is TERRIBLE! I have deep cuts on my ankles from them. I cut them way down for my next run and still they slice my ankles. Great shoe with one big flaw.

I love this shoe, it hugs my heels and still gives my toes enough room. Altra really needs to get better cushion technology and vibram soles. I've ran maybe 40 miles and they're giving out.

I feel like Altras would be good shoes but I can't seem to get the right fit. They run small already and they don't offer size 11.5 for women. The 11 is too small and the 12 is a full size too large. Tried men's to rectify this issue but those were too wide. Better sizing would be nice to accommodate more customers wanting to wear a "foot shaped shoe".

In less than 2 months a hole developed in the upper above my big toe. The outsole is wearing too quickly as well. They have only been used walking on asphalt.

I wear a 12 in Altra and bought these on sale. They arrived today and I couldn't get my foot in them. My niece who wears a 10 came over and they fit her perfectly so guess who has a new pair of shoes? (We checked inside the shoe and they are labeled 12). Otherwise cute shoe. She's a nurse and had wanted a thick-soled shoe so she's happy with them.

These are the first uncomfortable Altras I have ever bought and have had quite a few pairs. The tongue is so sharp it digs into the front of the ankle. Not sure who designed this tongue, but it is awful. Overall, not the Altras I have known and loved.

I'm an avid walker and on my feet for long hours and love the Altra's for toe space even though I have a more narrow foot however, the Timp 4 or the brand new Timp5 is no comparison to the Timp3! Please bring back the Timp3!!!

Used to love all my previous timps. These feel smaller and more narrow than previous. Feet burning when walking. Not as comfortable as they used to be. Wish they felt more like the older versions which were basically lone peak with more cushion

So sad the construction of this shoe is so poor. Holes in both shoes on the outter sides within 30 days of purchasing them. Had only worn them on smooth dirt roads. If it weren't for that they would be great shoes. Comfortable and good cushioning. Need them to last longer than a few runs before the construction of them is ruined though.

I bought these because they fit great. Unfortunately, the tongue is truly terrible and cuts into my foot. I tried to cut it down to modify, so I can't return them, but this design flaw is awful.

Loved this model of shoe until now. I bought 5 pairs of the Timp 3. Everything feels different. The tongue digs into the ankle cutting the skin. I gave it about 75 miles to break in, only has gotten worse. The size is 1/2 size smaller than every other shoe I have bought for running. This makes long runs at altitude really uncomfortable when feet start to swell a little.

Trail walking mainly. Like cushioning which is just right, not too thick or squishy. Wide toe box exceeds what I need for right foot which has bunion so normal left foot is swimming in left toe box.
The main problem with Timp 4 is the seriously strange tongue which has two extensions on each side of tongue which have to be smoothed out so to avoid ridges to rub against sides of toes, and in addition, the tongue needs to be pulled forward so it doesn't bunch up in front toe box. Too complicated and too much material in the tongue and too large toe box make shoe feel strange bunchy,
