Everyday walking outside, the tounge rubs on front of ankle. Hurts after a while. Have to wear long socks. I prefer ankle socks. Rubs my ankle raw almost needs softer tounge or new design

This iteration of the Timp is a solid daily trail runner that will likely transition nicely into a great hiking sneaker. The Timp series has always worked well for me. A no nonsense, moderately stacked yet relatively agile runner with lots of versatility. Altra marketed the Timp 4 as a tougher, trail-ready shoe and while they delivered somewhat on their promises, I'm not quite sure it was worth it. The shoe feels beefier. I think the stack height is similar to previous iterations but it really feels like more underfoot. That combined with the heavier and more durable materials lends to a somewhat clunky vibe. Even just in the hand, the shoe feels heavy relative to the Timp 2.0 and others. Its also not particularly protective. There is plenty of foam on this shoe, and the foam is soft with plenty of step-in comfort, but you still feel a lot of the annoying rocks and roots while out there for long runs. This isn't to say the Timp 4 is a bad shoe. The midsole material is fine for for plodding, slow miles on non-technical trials. The fit is good, if you are a fan of the Torin and other standard-fit Altras. And it seems like it should be a durable shoe. It just doesn't really excite me to put it on like old Timps did.

I loved them when I first bought them, but after a couple of months of light to moderate use, the side material completely ripped.

I thought I had finally found the perfect running shoe for me. The Timp 4 is so comfortable, honestly it was a joy to put them on. I bought them in winter in Alaska so I didn't wear them outside much, mostly just to drive into town. Once the snow melted I went on one trail hike and the mesh on the edge of the sole started pulling loose. It didn't look great but I was hopeful it wouldn't get worse. I continued to baby them but after a few more trail walks the lower sides of the shoe began to fray and then just pull apart. I'm so disappointed, I thought I had found the perfect shoes for my feet. These were my first Altras but the durability was so poor I'm not sure I can justify trying another pair.

My 4th pair of Altra brand shoes and these shoes turned me off of Altra. The webbing material near the sole began fraying within a week, both shoes blew out (ripped completely through) on the flex joint below your small toe. The material and shoe seemed robust when new but they wore fast and look much older than they are. I use them to mow now. Pass on these for sure. I will say they were comfortable - but felt like a waste of money for the quality I received.

Have hiked 80-90 miles in them and they feel great but are already destroyed. Least durable shoe I've ever owned and I've heard the same from others. Spend the money on shoes that are meant for hiking

Bought these shoes in Prescott AZ while on vacation there earlier this month. I wore them on 6 hikes, 30 miles total, and noticed the soles starting to delaminate. They were only 2 weeks old. Contacted Altra and was told it didn't meet their warranty policy. 2 weeks old! Very unhappy. First and last Altra purchase.

Some of the most comfortable shoes I've had, but started to fall apart in less than a month. Lateral toebox of right shoe started to blow out in less than 100 miles.

Used these for light waking. Wore out in less than 6 months of minimal use. Tried getting warranty, was told they had too much wear. I have Vans that lasted 5 years.Cheap shoes and poor customer service at Altra.

I bought the Timp 4 against my better judgment because I knew that mesh glued around the side of the sole would look trashed after the first run, and I was correct. The shoe is comfortable and I still wear them running and hiking but appearance wise they looked like they had 100 plus miles on them after a 5 mile trail run. Glad to see Altra learned from that disaster and didn't put fish net around the Timp 5 design.

I never write reviews, but I felt I should for this shoe. I purchased this show for my partner 12/2022. He loves the shoe and reports it is very comfortable. He does not wear the shoe to run, but only as an occasional shoe for walking around town etc. As others have stated, the sides of both shoes blew out after about 4-5months of light wear. A local shoe rep. encouraged me to write a review for Altra. The shoe rep. stated this must be a design flaw in the shoe, because he hears the same complaint about this shoe consistently. Again, my partner loves this shoe, but I can't afford to buy a shoe at this price point as a gift every year after only light use. He wearing the shoe with the sides blown out currently, because he likes the color and comfort. Please adjust the design and upgrade the materials to last longer.

I loved the Timp 2! The Timp 3's had a weird issue where the toe box was tight right over when my big toe meets the foot and it hurt to run in them -no good for me. Then came the Timp 4's and at first I knew they wouldn't work for me because the tongue had absolutely no padding and I couldn't even walk around the house in them without feeling they were uncomfortable on the top of my foot. But there weren't other good options for 0 drop and wide toe box (after trying Topo and just not loving the Pursuit and worrying they weren't working for me) so I came back and gave them a chance, but I cannot tie up the shoes without getting pain in my metatarsals. So I tried adding my own extra padding between the tongue and laces and they are bearable for a short run, but it's not ideal. Please bring back a padded tongue!! I am feeling hopefully having just tried on the Outroad 2 which now has a padded tongue, and they seem promising. However, the Timp 4 (and I don't know about the Outroad 2 yet) has TERRIBLE grip. I have slipped over/off dry rocks when wearing them. The grip on the Tmp 2's was quite good, maybe not perfect but just fine. I also find the Timp 2's only last me about 400km, which is 3-4 months, ONLY. I haven't been able to wear the Timp 4's long enough, but I seriously doubt they will last, with the drainage tracts in the sole. Frankly they are just dumb. It's a trail shoe, you're going to get wet, and water goes both ways. Now there is just a useless hole in the sole that seems like it is a weak spot to me, and just gimicky. Can we just get a nice grippy sole that will last a while? Please go "back" to the Timp 2's (or 3's and fix the upper issue).

I really liked the feel and comfort of these shoes. However, the soles wore out in less than 250 miles to the point that they do not get good traction.

I had a Timp 1.5 and loved it, then switched to Lone Peak and liked it but came back to Timp 3. I had great experiences with all those products and bought Timp 4. They felt comfortable but when I went out running it fell apart in the first mile and made me trip on the asphalt. This was the worst quality experience I have ever had. I think the sole wasn't properly glued on.

I LOVE the fit of these shoes, thought for sure I'd found my perfect match. One camping/hiking trip later, they are toast. I'm very sad. Altra, please consider make the same shoe w stronger materials

The mesh that covers the outsole and touches the ground that started peeling immediately. After two months of regular wear (not running), I noticed that the outside toe box was blown out. I assumed because of other Altras I have purchased that these would at least get me through a season. No such luck with the materials in this shoe. Not a brand-wide criticism, but I won't buy this model again.

This was my first pair of Altra's and my first pair of "nice" running shoes ever. The shoe fits great, and was very comfortable for the short period that it lasted. However the durability is unacceptable. My first time wearing them the mesh on the right shoe started peeling up off the bottom of the sole. I figured that didn't matter much, because I couldn't figure out what purpose the mesh served anyways. But after a few more uses on trails, the uppers near the little toe on my right shoe started developing some concerning wear. This weekend on an 18 mile trail walk/run it completely wore out, leaving a 2"-3" hole along the outside of the shoe. The left shoe has fared better, but is wearing in the same way. All told I have between 100-120 miles of 50% trail running and 50% road/treadmill running on these shoes, and for the price I expected 3-4x more (the local company I bought them from said I'd get 300 miles out of them). If the wear on your shoe looks like my left shoe in the attached pic, don't go farther than a couple miles from your car or run the risk of your shoe completely falling apart!

Pretty disappointed overall in the quality of this shoe. They are really comfortable and fit well, but after 100 miles of hiking they had totally broken down. The mesh upper has several holes in it.

I bought these Aug. 6th and today is Aug. 26. The left upper is already falling apart. As expensive as these are they should not be coming apart so soon. I am not a hard core runner. I only run 2 miles at a time around my yard and down the gravel a couple times a week. I was really hoping to buy a pair of shoes that would really last a while. From other reviews on here I think I should have tried a different style with better upper construction. They are extremely comfortable though. I have slightly wide feet where wide shoes are actually too wide. These have a great fit for me. The cushion is amazing on gravel and the grip is really good going up and down hill. I thought it would feel like I was going to twist my ankle with all that cushion but it's nice and sturdy.

I really love the look and feel of this shoe but within a week, the uppers started wearing too fast. As a desert trail runner these shoes were more comfortable than my Lone Peaks but at just under 130 miles, they started to tear on the arch side of the uppers. I blame the material. I managed to GearAid and Shoe Goo them together for another 100 miles before completely retiring them (Don't end them, mend them). I am not recommending purchasing the 4's but I am extremely hopeful that when Altra puts out the 5, it uses the same upper materials and soles of their other shoes. In the meantime, I'm back to my LP7's waiting for the Timp 5. Please don't keep us waiting Altra!

The shoes fit great and I do enjoy them as running shoes. However the durability is questionable and my first pair got destroyed in about a month of use (130) miles.

Love the cushy sole and they feel great on, but there’s something weird about the tongue. It’s about an inch too long and cuts into my leg. worse than that tho, my leg pushes it back into the shoe when I walk and then it bunches up near the gaiter clip end. So strange, I’ve never experienced that. I’m a fan of the Lone Peaks and have gone through at least 10 pair but was looking for some more cushion underneath my aging feet for my next thru hike. Sadly, these won’t work because of the tongue issue. I considered cutting it shorter but there’s some kind of fill inside that would leak out if it were trimmed.

I wear these for light hiking & recreational trail running. 1st pair blew out sooner than I expected. 2nd try with them; purchased April 8th, & they're starting do do the same. Not a fan.
